Who is entitled to JSA?
You may get Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) if the following apply:
you’re 18 or over (there are some exceptions if you’re 16 or 17 - contact Jobcentre Plus for advice)
you’re under the State Pension age
you’re not in full-time education
you’re in England, Scotland or Wales (there is a different application process for Northern Ireland)
you’re available for work
you’re actively seeking work
you work on average less than 16 hours per week
your partner, if you have one, works for less than 24 hours a week on average
you have signed an agreement to look for work (‘Claimant Commitment’)
you don’t have an illness or disability which stops you from working
Age
Up to 24 up to £58.90 weekly
25 or over up to £74.35 weekly
To claim Housing Benefit you usually have to:
have a low income or be claiming other benefits
be at least 16 years old – if you’ve been in care you’ll need to be at least 18
either have less than £16,000 in savings or be getting the guarantee part of Pension Credit
The maximum amount of Housing Benefit payable is: 100% of your eligible rent (after any ineligible service charges) If you are not working, your maximum housing benefit will be restricted so that the most you can receive in all benefits paid will be £500 per week for a couple or family or £350 for a single person.
