Hello, and welcome to the Vault 101 lecture series. Today we'll be talking about pre-war railroads in and around Vault 101, in what used to be Northern Virginia. The information in this lecture is the result of expeditions over the past six months, along with historical data from the Vault's archives and information scavenged from other vaults via the Vault-Net. Let's begin.

1. Columbia Mono-Rail. CMR was constructed by Vault-Tec between Boston, Washington and Chicago by way of Pittsburgh in the early 21st century. The demanding project accelerated the creation of new technologies, in particular the Nuclear Thermal Penetrator, which were used to construct new tunnels underneath the Hudson and East rivers and then the Applachian Mountains. Likewise, the massive power needed for the railroad's magnetic leveitation (Mag-Lev) propulsion system required new fluid energy management systems constructed by Rok-Solid Geothermal. These technologies would later prove essential to the Manhattan Shelter Study and Project Safehouse.

Observation reports - CMR monorail. CMR monorail utilized the existing DC Union Station north of the US Capitol. Here, it exits the city's limits at about MP 3.5 heading west. Four tracks proceed until Shady Grove, where one set continues West towards Pittsburgh the other North towards Harrisburg. Shady Grove is strategically important, as it is also where the DCTA's Bethesda Branch ends and where the B&O Baltimore Branch would normally begin. However, as on-site conditions demonstrate there are no railroad tracks north of the train yard (MP 20.3 - CP Meresti). This was extremely mysterious considering the extant and operative tunnel to the north to Pittsburgh. We will return to this later.

CMR - Pittsburgh Subdivision. This line proceeds west, passing south of Germantown, crossing the Potomac at Lowe's Landing and then through Leeburg. Interesting, the community of "North Potomac" no longer exists and no trace of it exists, despite being marked as such on DCTA maps. Likewise DCTA maps have no mention of the Bethesda, Seneca, or Meresti stations despite all three existing and make no mention of the cutoff connecting the Blue and Red lines north of Farragut, to allow access to both train yards. There is no explanation for this, as there is no explanation for the lack of a transfer point between the Blue and White lines. Perhaps the maps are severely out of date, and reference the beta version. This line is powered by the hydro dam (MDPL-MRS) where it crosses the Potomac, with the MRL also serving as the primary interconnection between the Northeast and Southeast power grids. Overall, this line follows the original B&O Metropolitan Branch and was likely what replaced it in the 21st century.

CMR - Harrisburg Subdivision. This line meanders north, passing east of Germantown between the water resivour/power tunnel and the large power plant. After much investigation this area was probably where a majority of the region's power was generated, with water being stored in the resviour for peak demand. The Maryland Power And Light plant is especially significant, not only is it the largest visible landmark in the general area but it's power generation system is a highly sophisticated georeactor. In short, the plant utilizes the natural geography beneath itself to compress radioactive material enough to achive criticality, which then heats injected gas into a high-pressure turbine. The design is extremely efficient, although was likely extremely costly to install. We can only assume wartime demands for mass produced crate reactors forced such a design. The plant provided energy to the adjacent tracks and DCTA at Meresti. The RF facilities there are likely pre-war, although the extant structures around it were scavenged and setup by civilians post-war.

Olney. A brief mention: the site supposedly housed the region's powerworks as the USAF's advanced power dynamics laboratory. Little is known about it, but surviving data indicates that the facility was working on laser-based power transmission for aircraft propulsion. As the area is infested with deathclaws and ghoulized staff it has been marked as unsafe and it was avoided by the expedition team. Some stray staff outside the city were caught by the team, but were found to be completely senile and completely feral. A wallet with identification cards indicated that the city was closed to government personell only at least four years before the war. It contains a full undergrounded connection into the adjacent power lines and is energized enough to prevent re-energization of the system north of MD-13 and MD-16.

Clarksburg Subdivision. As mentioned, there is a notable absence of train track between the Braddock Heights Tunnel and Meresti. This was attributable to a number of factors that the expedition team discovered. First, the entire city of Frederick was entirely destroyed during the war, likely a result of either a malfunction of the warhead upon reentry or a caculation error. Secondly, while the city of Pittsburgh survived it's current leadership has little interest in southern expansion as they view everything west of the mountains to be irradiated beyond suitable habitation. Thirdly, as Pittsburgh still has an operating steel furance they pay money for metal thus the tracks were gradually removed where plausible for scrap salvage. It stopped at the tunnel due to the deep piles used in the trackbed, which require high-power thermal tools to cut. This also speaks to the track's construction; the extension to Clarksburg and Frederick was completed much earlier in the 20th century than previously thought, while the tunnel north to Hagerstown is much newer. Remains of the track are now used as a trail by local traders, including the part that skirts dangerously by Fort Constantine whose huge cache of weapons were undoubtbly delivered by the railroad. Fort Constantine's robotic security is still operational and the area should be considered unsafe.

Blue Line West. Due to incomplete records, the expedition team spent more time than ancitpated in and around Jury Corners. While close to home, found DCTA maps do not match site conditions. For unexplained reasons DCTA did not include any stations outside of DC within Virginia, nor does it mention the Blue line's Warrington extension through Crystal City. Likewise, it is extremely strange that DCTA would go through the effort of an extension to Warrington but omit a station from the much larger city of Fairfax. Regardless, Jury St is unique in that it contains a small freight branch that connects to the station from the west running to the Iron mine of Evergreen Mills. The lead connects into the station from the south going northbound, forcing all freight trains to pull through Jury St. This supports the theory that a part of the Blue line contines northbound under the Potomac and into Meresti by way of Mclean. However such a suggestion strongly implies DCTA has or had some sort of direct connection into our Vault and Vault 106, but there is no evidence of this anywhere within our Vault. As communications with Vault 106 ceased less than six months after it's opening in 2070, there is no way to know if Vault 106 has or had rail facilities within. The expedition team did attempt contact at the front entrance, but while rebooting the exterior command terminal a large gas leak was detected and efforts were safely aborted to avoid injury.

VAPL and Rockin Tunnel. Virginia's P&L interconnects at the previously mentioned MRL to the north and to the east at Fairfax outside Fort Independence. The lines converge north of Warrintgon trainyard which provides a secondary power access point for DCTA. Presumptively, the line continues underground through the Rocklin car tunnel however there is no trace of it within the tunnel, and the tunnel's extremely large size is curious as is the similar lack of a southbound railhead from Warrington. Perhaps track was also ripped out here with a similar, newer bypass to the south. The expedition team did not have enough time to throughly scout the area, due to radiation levels receding and southern swampfolk encroaching on their position.

Further considerations. The expedition team believes a similar amount of unexpected terrain exists within D.C. itself, but lacks enough resources to begin scouting it. The team recommends that future expeditions focus on the Blue line routes west of the Potomac, with careful attention to Vault 106. Also, the DCTA system had no mention of Reagan National Airport or Dulles Airport which is curious and warrants further investigation. Adams AFB is still extant and occupied by it's robotic security forces, it is unknown if Air Force One is still sheltered within.
