Yeah it's a hassle when you don't have internet and you can only activate games you buy nowadays on DRM like Steam, EGS and GoG. At least you can pirate games for free on PC without the DRM if you so choose. It's still miles better than consoles though.

beats me, i never owned a console in my life but i reckon it was due to being a cheaper and more direct gaming platform. PC's been pretty expensive until recently compared to consoles.

You can emulate PS2 but actual PS2 is better (or fat PS3 if you can get some used one off a craigslist man for like a hundred bucks cuz it can emulate ps2 and it also has good movies)

how did you manage to kill 5 PS2s?, they may not be as sturdy as PS1s but they are still a fairly solid piece of hardware, i've had mine for ages and it still works, i even had to fix it and change the dvd laser a couple of times
furthermore, it was a chipped console that could run pirated games
either you let it fall to the ground more times than you are willing to admit or you plugged it into the power line without any protection

Culture and inertia, I'm guessing. All the nineties kids grew up with the idea that gaming is all about consoles, and stuff like the Xbox series, Playstation series, and the Wii did well enough that a large enough number of people remained interested in console gaming. So console gaming culture remained a thing.
Marketing is also playing a large role here, I'm guessing. Piracy is a lot easier on PC games, so a lot of companies decided to bank on publishing their games on consoles.

now that shit is lost, you need to install games navigate a convoluted menu, download updates, etc, on top of that it is much easier to get games running on PC

What the fuck did you do to them? I've got two dead PS2s ( One from a power surge fucked my neighborhood and the other from an earthquake that caused the shelf to collapse)
My third and fourth PS2s have been running for the last decade with no problem. You just have to know how to screw in a laser, which, compared to the hoops you have to jump through to repair a motherboard or fix a PS4 or Xbox 1, is very easy.

Exclusives. See, the stagnation of gaming and the over-saturation of the market ironically is great for PC gaming. When there's no quality control and no reason to own a specific system? You can put out garbage everywhere and eventually, there's no point in owning a console. Just have a PC and you can play all the garbage you want.
A decade ago, hell, even today, emulation doesn't work 100%. So, having a the hardware was perfect. For Example: If you want to play Valkyire Profile 2 without triggering the most insidious copy protection ever made, you still need a real PS2.
Now to add insult the injury the change of consumer habits has damaged everything to the point of suicide. Which, again is great for PC gamers because they have no quality or taste. Games like Fortnite and shitty F2Ps have dominated the PC market and have crushed the console market. There's no room for "real" games anymore. The best part about this all?
All the shit EA did, every little shitty tactic they used in the past and later repented for? Is now done en masse by every game developer BUT EA. Gaming got monkey pawed.
Now, the only way to have real freedom in your games is to either A) play really old games or B) use really old consoles like the PS2.
Now in my opinion, I miss videogames 1990 to 2010. I mean, at least then. I had choices in shit to play. Today? The hottest game on the market is Just Ghosts of Red Creed : Tomb Gear Solid 7: Guy with questionable Morals walks around large map doing nothing Redemption in Japan this time. It's literally the same game I just played but the market loves it.
