VAC is actually kinda ineffective, but I think its better to have no anti cheat at all than to have kernel anti cheat. I believe that the loss of dedicated servers with regular admins is what has really brought on this perceived need for "flawless" anti cheat. No moderation on your average matchmade game means it's hard to get a vote kick for cheaters in time. I also think that the number of people who actually bitch about cheaters in most games are in the minority, but they bitch louder so they are perceived to be the majority.

See, shot in the dark, I'm betting you're basing the effectiveveness of VAC on TF2, which is actually a rather horrible way to judge whether or not it's effective.
See TF2's a rather unique situation as it's over a decade old, and progressively it has gotten less free with how servers work, first with quickplay choking hundreds of user servers out for not being quickplay kosher. This incidentally, introduced the cancer of Adware plugins and widespread abuse of the MOTD feature as, even if a server was godawful cancer that'd play an ad on join, play an ad on resupply, play an ad on death, play an ad on respawn (ALL OF THESE BEING, REAL SOURCE MOD PLUGINS) they don't actually have to worry about being widely blacklisted as being quickplay kosher would guarantee people being funneled into the server, this also introduced a widening of the issue of people cheating.
Now, in an age where matchmaking that is nigh completely unmonitored, period, it's technically feasible for people to deploy cheating bots on disposable accounts on the regular as nearly ALL game traffic is forced into the same servers up until a new ban wave and analytic update rolls out.
Even CS:GO has regular human moderation.

Looks like Bethesda is going for a hat-trick and have added a battle pass to Fallout 76. I guess they still aren't getting enough money from the Fallout First and microtransactions. They already have problems with the wastelanders update like NPCs stealing player weapon and armor when they die and never returning it and recently, a disabling vending machines after a May 15th dupe glitch. I'm sure there was more but I think even people are tired of talking about the failure that is fallout 76 to make a dedicated thread for it.

I think the superior solution is to air gap a separate PC exclusively for gaming and install all of the cancerous shit required to play whatever game you feel like playing with minimal fear.
