Frontier Developments have quietly announced that a new game set in the Age of Sigmar setting has a possible release in 2023. Myself I am ambivalent about this, having been a collector of Warhammer Fantasy for a number of years. I am wondering what your thoughts are on this topic.

But why though? last I checked, damn near everyone who played or enjoyed Fantasy universally hates Age of Sigmar.

Are there actually fans of this setting? I was barely a Warhammer fan, and it still pissed me off. But now there's a digital game?

I think it was purely from a sales standpoint. I wish they could have done the End Times a little differently though…

>>16935254

From what I have heard, there were some initial teething problems but as part of recent updates, from what I have heard the play-ability of the game has improved.

For a number of months, I collected a number of White Dwarf issues to see what I missed out on and from what I have gathered, the lore looks pretty interesting.

For example, the Flesh Eater Courts is a faction of insane ghouls who see themselves as chivalric knights whereas in reality they are the complete opposite.

Or the Kharadron Overlords- a civilisation of dwarfs with airships.

If anything else, the models are pretty cool.

There is a plan to re-release Fantasy under the imprint Old World but I am uncertain as to when this will take place.

The thing is, if a game in Age of Smegmar will actually be well made, people will start liking that setting because of the game. I mean Dawn of War popularized WH40k, TW:W - Warhammer Fantasy. So it might have a chance of popularizing that cut down and over boosted on steroids setting.

40k was popular well before that. I mean, the whole idea of Space Marines was pretty much due to them. Aliens did come out a year before 40k though (86 vs 87), but the bulky aesthetic and term "space marine" is all Games Workshop. Dawn of War is decades later.

Just to add, my point is that 40k incubated for a long time in geekdom before DoW. While Sigmar was hated from the start and hasn't been around very long.

I can only hope they retain the mature rating.

In terms of popularisation of the setting, Black Library has a comparatively new and successful imprint of books called Warhammer: Horror which is an excellent alternative way of exploring the setting.

I would start with the anthology books Maledictions, Invocations and Anathemas first to get a general taste.

>>16935273

Not to mention the fact that there are a whole other range of influences from Nemesis The Warlock (theocratic setting), ABC Warriors (Vindicare Assassin looks like Joe Pineapples), Mad Max and anime series like Guyver which influenced the design of the Eldar in aesthetic and the dependence on 'stones'.

Only 40k fags or the sunk cost fallacy middle aged cash cows who are terrified of leaving the hobby and having to learn something new. The new universe is designed to market to 40k fags. Anyone who liked Age of Strife because it had funny allegories for medieval/Rennaisance history, fantasy tropes and mythology is long gone.

40k is pretty much dead as a setting, it's been pozzed to high heavens.

Try reading the latest Horus Heresy books chronicling the Siege of Terra and you'll see that virtually every single of authority that isn't Malcador, the Primarchs or Space Marines (whom they can't turn into cunts due to lore reasons) is a woman.

Leader of the Imperial Navy? Female

Her progeny? Also female

Some no-name officer defending a fortress in the system? Female

Captain of World Earter capital ship? Female

POV IG character? Female

Captain of the IG regiment for above character? Female

Dynasty representative for above IG regiment? Also female

Super-duper skilled geneticist? Female

It's also revealed that the Astartes get their name from the female scientist that was pivotal in their creation, and that the Moon matriarchy was also involved and knew more about genetic engineering than the Emperor.

It's just pozz upon pozz upon pozz. It's genuinely fucking embarrassing to read HH books because every character of note that isn't a Primarch or Space Marine is a cunt.

Essentially yes. Apart from the fact that the Stormcast Eternals are the deceased souls of heroes and can be male or female. When they die, they get reforged but each time they lose a little more of their humanity.

Nah, this is a fucking staple of the HH. 9 out of 10 named characters in positions of power that aren't post-human are womyn. It's so pathetically obvious what they're doing I can't even summon the will to act disgusted.

If you don't believe me go read the first book of the Solar War.

As for her specifically, Angron (you know Angron, murderhobo that had every one of his soldiers get the fun nails rammed into their skulls) marked her out as speshul because she's so good at killing people.

The MI in Starship Troopers bears only superficial resemblance to power armor in broader popculture, as the suits were highly automated with integrated sensor and ECM, computer-assisted targeting, all weapons being integrated in the suit rather than held or carried, weapons ranges of miles (including mini-nukes), very wide force dispersion, and enhanced mobility including jump-jets. In terms of military doctrine, they functioned less like infantry, more like tanks or attack helicopters.

Likewise the "bugs" weren't, even at the level of individual drones, naked animalistic predators using biotech, but a technological species using human-like weapons and other machinery even at the infantry level, that just happened to have a hivemind.

Comparing the modern conception of power armor, space marines, and buglike aliens, Starship Troopers is only distantly related through multiple layers of being altered, but WH40K even in its original Rogue Trader incarnation is 99% identical.

Really the biggest influence before WH40K isn't Starship Troopers, but Aliens.

> the suits were highly automated with integrated sensor and ECM, computer-assisted targeting

Virtually all power armor suits have those, in every IP, including Space Marines.

>very wide force dispersion, and enhanced mobility including jump-jets.

Yep, got those too

>In terms of military doctrine, they functioned less like infantry, more like tanks or attack helicopters.

Space Marines don't function like infantry either. They barge in, drop on top of their target, annihilate everything in a few minutes, and leave. Much like a tank company or attack helicopter wing. The Imperial Guard is supposed to hold the ground, whenever their slow asses get around to arriving.

>Likewise the "bugs" weren't, even at the level of individual drones, naked animalistic predators using biotech, but a technological species using human-like weapons and other machinery even at the infantry level, that just happened to have a hivemind.

<What the fuck are the Tyranids? Never heard of those guys. Haha tyranids look like xenomorphs lol

You also forgot a militaristic society that automatically gives more rights to people who serve a tour. The only real differences are there because they wanted the Imperium of Man to look like they were using a hacked-together array of technology they barely understand, which is why they don't have ECM or mini-nukes mounted on Space Marine armor.

>including Space Marines

Astartes are just d00dz in metal cans carrying pistols/rifles/swords/etc. in their hands they aim/swing at stuff. Most of what makes them special is in their bioengineered size, power, and longevity, not their equipment.

<jump-jets

>Yep, got those too

Jump packs are very unusual loadouts

>Space Marines don't function like infantry either. They barge in, drop on top of their target, annihilate everything in a few minutes, and leave.

They absolutely do function like infantry, paratroopers specifically, usually operating in infantry-like squads, on foot.

That's nothing at all like the independent blitz of bunny rabbits doing target designation Heinlein described. Probably the closest thing to the MI in popculture, doctrinally, are BattleMechs in BattleTech.

<naked animalistic predators using biotech

>not Tyranids

Only the most immature genestealer cults use artificial technology or communicate in any way comprehensible to other species, every other form of 'nid consists entirely of inscrutable waves of near-mindless biomass. Further, the structure of the 'nid hivemind compared to Klendathu is exactly opposite, with the 'nid hivemind being completely decentralized among every individual creature, while the Klendathu are lead by human-level "brain caste" that make command decisions, scientific research, culture, diplomatic treaties, etc..

>Most of what makes them special is in their bioengineered size, power, and longevity, not their equipment.

Debatable, the equipment is so valuable that it is treated as heirlooms that are passed down from Marine to Marine, same as geneseeds. They contain power sources that last for indefinite amounts of time and can survive in the vacuum of space, in fact it is one of the important fighting scenarios they're trained in. Some of the equipment is deemed more valuable than entire squads of Terminators, hence Space Hulk expeditions.

>Jump packs are very unusual loadouts

Depends on the chapter. Remember we're talking about Starship Troopers influence here, not "Space Marines are literally a clone of Starship Troopers" because they're not, but the influence is extremely apparent at the same time.

>They absolutely do function like infantry, paratroopers specifically, usually operating in infantry-like squads, on foot.

That's more detail-oriented than I thought you were describing, but fair enough.

You are aware that the regular Tyranid units like Termagaunts use biotech rifles and weapons that the hivemind continuously evolves right? There are really not that many alien races in pop culture which use biotech and have a hivemind. The influence is pretty obvious. Maybe they took some aesthetic queues from Alien but it is much more Starship Troopers than Alien, because of the exact traits you described.

Yeah, much like some of the odder design choices of other armies including Orkz that do the same thing with Squigz this is largely due to the practical need for GeeDubs to sell "bitz" to customize models with.
