Personally, I think the distinction is meaningless and overvalued. There isn't anything inherently wrong with making games with some sort of message, but there isn't that much point in making half-assed games that only exist to ham-handedly beat you over the head with some political or philosophical tripe. It's the same reason propaganda isn't really considered art, beyond the aesthetics, or that many look down upon modern art – it is evident that the piece lacked effort. Furthermore, if you're going to make a GAME, then you should exercise the tools that the medium gives you, otherwise there isn't much point. Depression Quest is shitty because the message it communicates can be done so in a much more concise and poignant manner, especially if you opt for a different medium, and it carries on with tedious choices that don't really matter in the end because you just get more depressed anyway. The fad in the current zeitgeist is to gamify everything everywhere, including work, because behavioral psychologists believe it brainwashes people more efficiently. Hence, propaganda. I think that most of those who hate the "video games are art" argument hate it because it was used by big-name faggots to subvert the industry into becoming more like Hollywood, and simultaneously by aut(ist)eurs to allow these low-effort "art games" to proliferate in the indie scene.
Arguing about art is extremely difficult and often meaningless anyway, because most people cannot agree on what "art" means, and any philosophical discussion is absolutely pointless without defined terms (coincidentally, be sure to make someone define "God" if you ever decide to argue about religion). It is usually associated with things that communicate some kind of message, from my experience, but it annoys me because it tends to discount the talent and sweat of those practicing techniques and craftsmanship. The art, animation, sound design and engineering, and of course the software design. The labor and creativity that goes into these things is what gives it value, not the arbitrary label of "art."

I took a vocational creative writing course a long time ago because writing was the only thing I really excelled at in school and I was interested in becoming an author. I also got a job working at something else that I was really interested in, and ended up leaving my final project until literally the last day before I remembered it was due. I had wanted to write a short story about a topic I'd had rolling around in my head - about 50 pages or so - but didn't have the time. In a panic, I gave up, accepted that I had fucked up, and simply made what I thought the instructor wanted, which was unbelievably contrived, stupid, pretentious bullshit: I had 20 pages bound together by a crafty friend with ribbon, then just wrote stupid garbage on most pages. Some I left blank. Some I cut out magazine article words and stuck together hipster shit like "Life is hard. We all wait for death" or "Love is like bullet" or even more embarrassing shit I don't want to share. For the last page I simply glued a small plastic mirror to the paper. I expected to be run out of town because I was genuinely disgusted by what I had made, but didn't have any better ideas that I had time to complete. Instead, I got an A+ and the school bought the fucking thing from me, and paraded it around for months - hell, they might still be doing it now - as "the creation of a true artist in the field of creative writing". I have never been more ashamed of a project and that was the day I completely and officially lost faith in the term "art", because it is effectively meaningless. Sage for gay blogpost.

Don't conflate modernism with post-modernism either, modernism still had some geniuently good works and spawned interesting art movements as well as many great literary works. Hell I have seen even really good use of absurd and grotesque writing like in Ferdydurke or Tango, with the message being able to be clearly seen. And it's not like modernism didn't spawn some interesting art movements like surrealism which I'm going to defend to my very fucking death. Even abstract art is a bit missunderstood, Arabs were doing it a long time ago already, and in a way you could argue that creating an actually interesting and beautiful composition out of very simple shapes takes actual effort. You could say that abstract art is in a way an experiment of reducing art to the very core element of composition. Not all abstract art involves just randomly shitting paint on a canvas. There is a lot of abstract art which has discernable elements and could be analyzed.

Interesting to see both posts' concepts. A good thing to consider with traps and presumably drag queens and such as well (as opposed to trannies) is that we are just gay dudes who wanna crossdress but also want to actually do it well. But all of that is secondary to the game play, which again, based on requiring interactivity, is not art. At most, games are a result of utilitarian craftsmanship, not to expression. During the reign of Sixtus IV, a team of Renaissance painters that included Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Pinturicchio, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Cosimo Rosselli, created a series of frescos depicting the Life of Moses and the Life of Christ, offset by papal portraits above and trompe-l'œil drapery below. These paintings were completed in 1482, and on 15 August 1483 Sixtus IV celebrated the first mass in the Sistine Chapel for the Feast of the Assumption, at which ceremony the chapel was consecrated and dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
