So Soyny shared it's new controller for the PS5 today and it looks like chinkware. http://archive.is/X7hcN

Maybe I just don't care about consoles, but both Microsoft and Sony have had boring reveals, though at least Microsoft showed what the damn thing looked like. I guess Sony's console looks worse then a tissue box/waste basket so they have been redesigning it this whole time and cannot show what it actually looks like.

Why? what is wrong with having a plain old wired controller exactly? I would much prefer not having to charge my controller every 20 minutes or so because the battery life is absolute garbage or my favourite thing about the PS4 controller when I have the charger plugged in and it comes slightly loose and the entire controller disconnects. Fuck wireless.

Agreed but apparently the PS5 will use USB-C so that will hopefully no longer be a problem. The Switch Pro Controller has USB-C too and the connection between cable and controller is rock solid.

You ever notice that people sometimes call that top position the "sweet spot", but the right stick, which requires greater precision for its applications, stays in the middle and no one fucking complains? Indeed, when the Wii U Pro controller did it, it felt like shit.

If we're talking, like in general the reason every controller is wireless now is a weird simultaneous situation of being for and against longevity.

Since a fucked cable can easily be replaced, But battery shit is platinum kikery but that's also a little bit to do with no sorts of "standard lithium cells" for rechargable controllers, and everyone is too much of a pussy to make controllers that can recharge rechargable AAs

Judging by Spiderman's gameplay, it seems more like the game's fault. Lots of games have a linear interpolation between the player's idle state and the walking state, and won't really start the walking state until the input exceeds a certain amount.

I used Dualshock 4 controllers on PC and all the DS4 needs is:

1. better battery even better if it would just use replaceable AA batteries instead of an internal battery that is a pain to remove requiring you to pry the controller apart while invariably one of the springs under the triggers will shoot across the room never to be seen again

2. USB-C instead of USB-B cancer that becomes loose over time

3. concave joystick heads instead of this convex idiocy which makes no fucking sense whatsoever.

4. slightly more distance between the two joysticks to better avoid the shortcoming of the "symmetrical sticks" design which is hitting your thumbs together when using both joysticks

That's all it really needs. You could argue about improving the d-pad, but for 2D platformers it is far better than the swiveling garbage d-pad I had on the Xbox 360 controllers which would, for example, always go diagonally instead of straight up a ladder in Super Mario Bros. 2.

It means that if the game doesn't want you to go left for some reason, it will make the controller's analogue stick harder to move left.

You know how arcade racing games will jerk the wheel around when you hit a wall? Or in Daytona how the steering wheel will hold itself right if you've crushed the right front end of the car? That's haptic feedback.

>>16905193

>You could argue about improving the d-pad

Could? The Sony d-pad is fucking garbage. A single tiny piece of plastic in a segmented design to avoid a patent infringement. There are any number of better d-pads that are more responsive, easier to use, etc. but Sony sticks with that shit because it's "iconic" or something.

you mean while loading? you still can't load those in the controller, but you can charge them easy via usb etc and don't have to buy new ones constantly or require a literal chinkshit charger for nimh rechargeables which has a good chance to burn your house down.

they also charge pretty fast and have stable voltage output, which otoh you can consider a drawback since it fucks up most charge meters, so you never know how empty they are. oh and they don't leak either.

look for tenavolts, those seem to be one of the best. company is apparently chink energizer, so some level of quality.

a while back needed to use AAs again and was pretty pissed because I don't like using singles and fucking hate rechargeables with all their bullshit attached, but lithiums are basically just as good as charging the controller itself, worst case you can use them for something else or sell them.

Yeah, I forgot that one, they also didn't mention whether the controller is going to have gyroscopes like the DS4, meaning they either took them out or left them as they were instead of improving on them since the Wii U, Switch and Steam controller have shown that gyros are a viable alternative to sticks.

As other anons have pointed out the controller doesn't have any backpaddles as well, I imagine that's so they can sell them separately like with the DS4.

That controller that you posted previously looks like complete and total shit, it doesnt even have any shoulder buttons and its glass or plastic would get all scratched up and smudged in probably a month of use.

Stop being a disingenuous faggot anon.

The Ouya controller is structured more like an xbox controller.

The D-pad and the analogue sticks are in entirely different places compared to the ps4/5 controller.

The Ouya contoller seemingly doesnt even have a pause button, touchpad button or "select" button.

The ps5 controller is nearly identical to the ps4 controller except its more rounder, bulkier and the "on/off" button in between the analogue sticks is apparently missing along with the glowy LED thing that was on the back of the ps4 controller.

I don't really see any improvements from the ps4 contoller though, its just shaped differently and is missing a seemingly pointless feature.

Generally though, it is treated more akin to hotkeys, where the d-pad is for either inventory, or more esoteric actions. As >>16905724 mentioned. Still looks like a shitty Hori knockoff.

And why… because they needed extra room in the controller to shove in all these unnecessary "Sense" gimmicks that will never be utilized to their fullest potential, if at all… and even if they were, mean next to fuck-all. Nobody really gave a shit about Six-Axis. Nobody really cared about HD-Rumble.

At the very least, the analog buttons on the DS2 and Gyro on the DS3 had some function that could be integrated with game mechanics. "Sense Technology" is really just a fancy way to say that their controllers are going to be the #1 choice of vidya-themed dildos on Pornhub.

Honestly, I like the DS4 Gen 2. It has it's issues, sure, but one thing Sony consistently gets right is it's face buttons. Nice and flat so they don't create pressure points, and no excessive travel distance on the depress so you can more comfortably and accurately land rapid inputs. The Xbox One controller is absolutely garbage for rhythm games because of this. Maybe it's just mine, but my controller has an issues with registering double inputs on a single button press. Not a huge problem for most titles, but fucks up my combos in fighting games and gets annoying with inventory/menu management or when trying to type with the OSK.

You can make that argument, anon, sure but consider their direct competitor, xCloud.

>somehow has more games you can play despite being in beta (something like 50)

>supports more controllers and phones despite being in beta

>has better delay than Stadia despite being in beta

>can actually play games you already own via xCloud

>will incorporate Gamepass into xCloud so, presumably, you can pay 15 or so a month to actually achieve Google's gimmick of playing "anything, anywhere on any screen"

I'm glad as fuck that Stadia has failed. It was looking for a while there that streaming was gonna take over in a few generations but this probably set it back quite a bit. I really don't understand why Google with Google money couldn't pull a Microsoft and do what they did because xCloud by comparison makes Stadia look like even more of a joke. I guess it's just a matter of Microsoft having the infrastructure in place. They basically said that their system is just a flick of a switch and any game "works" on xCloud.

Because game developers should have the option of utilizing a d-pad's control surface. The most obvious application is fighting games, but there are others, like any grid-based game. Really, I think the thumbsticks are more annoying the way that they're utilized in most games. Playing FPSes on console reminds me of ye olde days when publishers were absolute retards when it comes to player preference and included joystick control schemes for FPSes because "joystick is for vidya gaem.'

fair point, but even the ds3 had an led just for status. the biggest criticism was always MUH GLARE (but was needed for tracking, so hardly "no practical purpose" and you can turn it down) and MUH BATTERY (which I have never seen proof for, even heard the touchpad draws way more than the led).

more interesting is how they gonna handle tracking, even if all psvr games won't feature gamepad tracking like pcvr from now on, quite a few older psvr games still do, and unless you buy moves aren't usable at all.

Move controllers will be supported, but no games moving forward from the release of PSVR 2.0 will use them. I think Sony is going to make a hard policy on that. As for the controller, they'll likely just have a front-plate add-on with a USB-C pass-through. The PSVR market isn't very big, so it's not like they're going to piss off a large chunk of their customers by forcing them to buy add-ons, and anyone who has a PSVR is likely to be a pay-pig anyhow. They'll surely drop $20 on a doodad that enables them to play their existing PSVR titles at a usable frame-rate and resolution on the PS5.

It's not like Sony is adverse to selling controller add-ons anyhow. Pic Related

>Move controllers will be supported, but no games moving forward from the release of PSVR 2.0 will use them.

makes no sense unless they want to sell a completely new tracking system alongside it and any game becomes literally unusable unless you buy a whole range of addons, and that's not gonna fly. bundling it with a new headset would increase the price by a good bit. one of the reasons psvr sells as much as it does because it's only the HMD and you can use a pad like you're used to.

>anyone who has a PSVR is likely to be a pay-pig anyhow.

you can get a psvr for 150 bucks on sale, xniggers pay as much for a single gamepad. and psvr sold more than vive and rift combined, so while small it's still the biggest chunk of the vr market.

apparently ds4 is still supported, so back compatibility should be easy this way

>You mean $100 since Sony is horrible at making enough of any random accessories it makes.

it's either that or trying to get rid of stock in a continuous fire sale, see ps mini.

This made me wonder if the PS5 controller will have grip buttons. Both Microsoft and Sony seem to have been experimenting with it after the Steam Controller had 'em. It's weird that none of the articles so far show it from the back.

It's the shame the steam controller got so much of a shafting, I get why, but damn it's ergonomic as fuck.

If only it had the genesis DPAD that you could swap in, like what was in the patents way back then. Literally, the perfect controller.

I tried looking that up and found it looks like a patent for a d-pad mod to replace the left analog stick just got published last month.

I always hated the ps controller so any change is very welcome. Shitty controller is way too tiny and cramped up. But I have big hands in general and every other controller is too small for me too. I notice that the stream controller has similar spacing. Maybe controllers are designed for younger people? Wouldn't surprise me to be honest, console games are very crap compared to regular pc games.

Stick and buttons in the primary position. DPAD and right stick in your secondary positions.

Though in the case of xbox and playstation it's more to do with how they were figuring out layout back when the ps2 xbox gcn came out and has stayed as a "standard" though, somewhat regrettably xbox ditched having six face buttons for bumpers.

Personally I prefer the wii U layout, and that's not only due to the wii u pro controller lasting FUCKING FOREVER on a single charge.

The dpad/touchpad on the steam controller is ass. It's REALLY stiff, which combined with the shape makes it actualy painful to use in "Click" mode. In "touch" mode it's far more comfortable, but VERY easy to send extra inputs. The shoulder buttons are also pretty shit and have less than a millimeter of movement when you press them. Not sure how much of a problem that will actually be in the long run, but it feels wrong.

Back buttons are nice though, definitely

Sorry, but your crude drawing is not how hands actually work. Even with big hands, the analog sticks are still easily reachable on a DS4 stick.

Have you ever actually held a PS controller? That's not even physically possible without some kind of insanely retarded grip like curving your hands inward, avoiding touching the grips, and grabbing it from the very top.

The backwards grip is "legit" too, that's how some Japs played Armored Core back in the day supposedly.

In any case, the claw grip wouldn't even be possible with the analog and d-pad reversed and I think that's one of the reasons I like the playstation controller, is that if I really need to use the d-pad while moving and turning the camera, I always have the option to do so if I wanted to (Like for instance, switching through items in Dark Souls). It's a small thing, but it's saved my ass a couple times. It's why I'm kind of annoyed when the 3DS put the d-pad beneath the analog stick.

That's essentially a trigger though. It's perpendicular to the back of the controller and you press it with your index finger. Whereas paddles/grip buttons are parallel against the back of a controller and are pressed with the middle or even ring finger.

The PS3 wireless controller had a great battery life that would last for days at full charge.

The PS4 battery life would last for barely 6 hours at full charge.

I can't wait to see how fucking terrible the battery life is for this controller.

that "normal" only applies to ps4 tho and even then it's shit. he's holding the ds4 like a xbox pad (because sony changed default input from shoulders to triggers - like xbox), when it makes more sense to claw and have it rest in your palms.

on xbox the hands are rotated forward so the stick is more in line with the thumb - except the right one, even tho most games use both.

and you can't use your index finger on the d-pad on an xbox controller while still using the stick, you have to move the thumb.
