Only expect one or two replies due to the 8ch deplatforming but needed to jot this down. Cleaning up my backlog of Wario Land games and went back to 100% Wario Land 2. I only did the main story and never did the branching stories. Great game, wanted to get that done so that I can finally move on to figure out how to emulate Virtual Boy to play the Virtual Boy Wario Land which I never touched before. You always hear that it's one of the few good VB games despite it's length and I wanted to see how well it holds up compared to the rest of the series. And hoo boy was this good.

You have to remember that VB is technically the second Wario Land game and came before Wario Land 2. And already what is striking is the feel of the game. Wario controls really great. I like Wario Land 1/2/3/4/Shake, in fact 3 is my favorite, but I didn't really think Wario felt like he controlled amazingly until Wario Land 4. But man does he move so good here. The height of his jump, the shoulder bash, the amount of control in the air, everything. He feels powerful and fluid. Especially the Bull Wario/Eagle Wario power-up, which just feels incredible, with his immensely increased shoulder bash speed. Hell, even when he crouches or swims in the underwater levels he moves surprisingly speedy and snappy compared to his other games. Though he is slightly floaty when he jumps in comparison to the rest of the series, and doesn't have the ability to aim high when he picks up an enemy, he can only throw forward (but while holding the sprint button the throw is incredibly fast and powerful as enemies ricochet all over). Another thing, there's also a sprint button which makes Wario fun faster. A shame about this is that I have found no reason to not hold it (outside of rare moments of tight platforming) as Wario's default speed isn't great, so you will be holding the spring button the entire game. I put the input of the sprint on a shoulder button, so my index finger got tired after a while. The sprint should have been his default moving speed, though maybe they likely couldn't do this because you can jump too far with the sprint speed.

Another thing was the coins, hearts and power ups. Everything you bust open from the blocks will stay in existence even if you leave the screen. This is not something I remember any other Wario game doing, though I think coins from enemies still disappear if you don't grab them fast enough. Enemies, however, don't respawn after you kill them and leave the room. Which is something that definitely wasn't the case in Wario Land 2, which had enemies respawn every room exit (likely because many puzzles and secrets required having the enemies alive for Wario to grab). Everything only respawns when you leave the entire level.

The main differentiating mechanic in the game is being able to jump between the foreground and background. This is no different then Donkey Kong Country Returns, if you ever played that. It's neat but it doesn't add anything terribly revolutionary, though at the time it's way more novel. I can tell you this though: it feels much snappier and fluid here then it ever does in Donkey Kong Country Returns. This game does the concept way better, 15 years prior.

The game looks fantastic, especially when you compare to the gameboy titles (I played in black/white and removed most of the terrible 3D). Animations are great, art is great, Wario looks great. It won't be until WL4/Shake that Wario looks and animates this good.

Boss fights are pretty cool since they make good use of the background/foreground element. They are also pretty simple though in that they don't really change up their tactics after each consecutive hit.

The game is short, as mentioned before. There's only 14 levels, and 4 of them are boss fights (including the final boss) which makes it really only 10 levels. There's also not that much music and many tracks repeat throughout. Though Tonaka's song is at the end of the credits if you wait over a minute. First time I got the best ending over 2 hours.

This game has a New Game+. The only differences I've noticed so far is that they add random spikes around to make traversing and platforms perilous, the hidden treasures you collect seem to change their art (for example the first Hidden treasure was a Neko thing, but now in New game+ it's a Tanooki) and the bosses are slightly more aggressive (the Final Boss get's an added move). But otherwise it's not substantial, for example the hidden treasures don't even change location. The best ending for the game is to get all the hidden treasures under 2 hours, which gives Wario a sexy bunny suit girl accompanying him in 3D.

TL;DR: People weren't kidding when they say this is probably the best Virtual Boy game, and it's a great Wario Land game that stands among the rest.

I have heard that VB Wario Land might be the best Wario Land game, but how would you go for an authentic experience of the game without using the original hardware? VR Headset?, Playing the game on the 3DS?

EXCELLENT

Each Wario Land has something unique to it which makes me enjoy all of them for different reasons. Wario Land 1 is a bit more simplistic and relaxing experience, collecting coins and treasure feels the most satisfying in that one despite having no impact except for the ending. Wario Land 2 has good environmental challenges and obstacles, while Wario Land 3 has good puzzles and maze-like feel that need to be solved, good sense of mystery to it. Wario Land 4 has the best sense of momentum or movement and feels fun just to run around in. I wish someday, there would exist a Wario Land game which combines the best elements of each, and perhaps the Beat'Em-Up mechanics and Wario World. A new Wario Land or Wario World, I don't care. I just want the high octane insane "no shits given" Wario back instead of low energy microgame Wario.

I haven't played VB Wario Land or Shake It, but perhaps I'll get around to them soon considering this thread renewed my interest.

Curious to your reasons why. It does harken more to old school Super Mario Land 3 Wario Land which is more Mario-esque and focused on the power-ups then the direction the series went after WL2. My main issues thinking back is Wario's floaty jump (even if I liked the height), constant holding of the sprint and the short length.

>>16898942

Yup, while I have a clear favorite I've started to really appreciate all the games equally. Even Shake It! even though I feel Wario land 4 is just a far better version of that.

>>16899570

I used Mednafen. You drag the rom onto the .exe and the game starts (starting the .exe alone won't do anything). Options are a bit trickier because it's command line but there's documentation to help mednafen.github.io/documentation/vb.html

ALT+SHIFT+1 to remap your buttons if you used a joypad like I did.

Once you start up the rom the folder will create a file called "mednafen.cfg" and here you can change some configurations:

>vb.anaglyph.preset red_blue;

I replaced with vb.anaglyph.preset disabled;

This makes it black and white.

>vb.disable_parallax 0;

I replaced with vb.disable_parallax 1;

This disables most of the 3D affect.

It's a good game though. I mean, it definitely is not as tight as other Wario games because the emphasis is on solving light puzzles and the costumes could have been easily mapped to a button instead. A lot of the music in it is pretty cool too.

Playing old DS games really makes you appreciate how good we had it even a few years back and how shit gaming has become lately.

The symbols were pretty easy to draw, anon. I mean, you could do gibberish and it would kinda read it anyway, as long as you made something similar and not the exact symbol, it would be enough.

I'd say Master of Disguise has plenty of other problems, though, but that does include the stylus thing:

>Game is too short

>Gimmicks are all over the place

>Barely post game content

>Too many puzzles, literally a trivia puzzle I fucking hated

>Some of the costumes are just useless except for an specific situation or after an upgrade

>WARIO END UP LOSING ALL HIS WEALTH IN THE END

Because of the last one alone, I was pretty mad, however, the game does great in other areas.

>Music is fantastic

>One of the best looking Wario games

>Map design actually works well and it's fun to explore outside of gimmicks

>Collectibles are pretty fun to look at too

>Characters are pretty cool through the game and the story is nice

There's also the fact that it isn't properly a Wario LAND game on it's own. It was a pretty cool game, maybe the worst wario platforming game, sure, but by no mean a bad game on it's own.

>>WARIO END UP LOSING ALL HIS WEALTH IN THE END

I really hate this. Not to say it isn't a funny gag, hell I do find it funny how it played out in Shake It! and it is funny seeing Wario get screwed over, but I still really hate how two Wario games have Wario losing in the end. Wario Land 1, 2 and Virtual Boy Wario Land were pretty unapologetic that Wario won and continues to win. Wario land 3 and 4 he was a little more heroic but still clearly won in the end due to his selfishness.

Alright, so beat S-Hard on Wario Land 4. Had to re beat bosses due to my previous blunder so I got the Good and Best ending (common consensus is that most prefer the Good ending). I beat this game on Normal ages ago when it first came out, then now as an adult over the course of many years I would replay the difficulties again on emulator, this time finally tackling S-Hard.

The more I play this game, the more I appreciate it. I was a Wario Land 3 fanboy, so when I first got my hands on Wario Land 4 when it released I liked the game but was slightly disappointed overall due to it's more linear design. But after all these years it's a game that I've really grown to like even more then previously.

This game just oozes with style. Wario games are always weird and self-aware but this takes the cake. To this day I still think this is the Wario game with the best overall presentation. Everything lands, to the music, art, wackiness, sound effects, it all comes together. As I mentioned above when talking about Virtual Boy Wario Land, it wasn't until Wario Land 4 that I feel that Wario's "feel", controls and mobility was made perfect in this game that no other 2D Wario Land game has as of yet come close. Maybe it's because I'm a Metroid fan but I always loved the escape sequences, and the bosses compared to other Wario Land games are some of the better in the franchise. And each level is pretty unique with shifting artstyles everywhere. As I look at it now, and something I didn't appreciate before, I realize it's probably one of the most creative platformers Nintendo has ever created.

The biggest knock against Wario Land 4, and the reason why it disappointed me when I was younger, was always how straight forward it was. No world map like Wario Land 1, no branching story paths or secret exits like Wario Land 2, no metroid-esque progression like Wario Land 3. Just a glorified level select. In it's defense, you could select your starting level from whichever you want, but I don't think that's enough compared to what the other game's did. It's also pretty short with only 16 levels. This isn't all bad though, as it lends itself to be far easier to replay as I've come to appreciate over the years, something that isn't the same for Wario Land 3. Also it has harder difficulties which is very nice, and they mix up quite a deal from what I remember. Enemies get harder or swapped with harder variants, more enemies added, Jewel Pieces locations are changed, I think the time to escape and beat the bosses get's smaller, and your starter health is fewer. In S-Hard you only start with one heart, so it's actually quite stressful and a nice challenge. My only issue is that for some bosses it seems required to grind up to buy items in order to chip some of the bosses health away, otherwise you won't have enough time at all to defeat them before the Treasures start disappearing. Or maybe I just suck.

Either way, amazing game and probably the easiest Wario land game to get into.

Do you really want a Wario & Waluigi game after what's been happening to several of the Mario spin-off titles? Nintendo is getting really safe and bland with them, and those two characters are anything but that when properly utilized.
