This boss was considered one of the most infamous in the bullet hell genre. The go-to strategy to beating her was exploiting a glitch by suiciding at the right moments, but it was later figured out that this last bullet pattern came in waves, and was intended to test your resource management and skills, because while it looks random, the patterns are actually static from all sides, and only the rotation is randomized, the north, south, east and west patterns are all slightly different. Each pattern comes in waves, and the boss is vulnerable for a short moment where you're supposed to use a bomb to clear the field before the next wave comes in and makes the resulting mess impossible to dodge by sheer space. To facilitate this pattern, the game puts out so many bullets that the game itself slows everything down and lags slightly, which allows you to do precise movement. Since the pattern is so tight, NOT lagging the game would make it impossible.
This boss alone took about 13 years for anyone to beat without a single death.
Give me hard games. I crave them. Dark Souls isn't hard so shut up.

>Give me hard games.
Define "hard":
<Actually well designed games where the difficulty comes from fully mastering the game's mechanics, and you will be screwed over if you don't understand them
<Games where the difficulty comes from the developers essentially doing a joke/"Fuck you" difficulty that isn't suppose to be taken seriously
<Games that are just hard to play in general, resulting in pathetic idiots writing them off as "Worst game ever" when it may actually be a rather decent title (But, more often than not, aren't)

Shadowman 1 on the PSX.
Too many rooms where the challenge was making it past a dozen swinging mallets.. while the system managed a 1 fps render. You basically just had to get through by closing your eyes and figuring out the jump timing with (100's of) trail and error.

A lot of things in the game are physics based, so moving around and attacking is fucking annoying so it takes some time to get used to, but it makes the ragdolls move realistically, mp4 related. The autism required to beat that game is paralleled to none.
The extremely intrusive at times first person dungeon mechanics which are designed to make each sector a pain in the ass as possible to get through, stacked with the sparse save points, story progression which halt your progress at certian areas until you finish certain requirements and the (fair) amount of random encounters makes each sector take around a dozen or more hours to complete on average, with you dying around half amount if not even more times than that. The game took my sorry ass 72-78 hours to beat surprisingly and I considered myself fairly decent at the game.
One of the HARDEST parts of that game was fighting Asura and his upgraded version later on. His cheap ass fucking attack asura roga would make your party including yourself, go nuts and start killing each other including yourself. The only way I managed to beat him was using a fairy knife which charms enemies on hit sometimes and I managed to charm Asura so he would stop that shit and give my party a fucking chance But he used asura roga on us and attacking then charming myself only made me want to kms even more apparently
The final boss was even more BS. Every turn her elemental weaknesses and resistances change entirely. Physical attacks don't affect her. She has an attack which can send party members of certain allinements back into your comp. She has a move that can negate all stat changes and heal herself 600hp at the same time, which is more damage that you can deal in around 2-3 turns at times. The only way to beat her is to make the best demons possible in the game where I only managed to have enough demons and the right combinations to make amaterasu, the rest I had to get demon codes from other people on gaming forums in order to beat her.

A8 is essentially a cross between Burnout and Trackmania: meta is high top speed, long nitrous effeciency and drift-boosting to counter tight courners. Literally a game of car stats and barely any skill involved, hated by the community at the 3rd year of updates.
A9 is the same Burnout action (takedowns and nitro) but drifting is more like Initial D. You lose TONS of speed when when you corner in either way so actual knowledge of racing lines is essential to git gud, cornering must be reduced to a minimum in order to conserve speed. Meta is boosting in mid-air for more speed, perfect racing lines and conserving your momentum by maintaining as much speed as possible throughout the race.
Because of that last point, lots of nabs dropped the game because they don't know disabling TouchDrive is a thing, and simply can't drive for shit constantly going from 380km/h to 180 drifting out of a corner. It significantly raised the skill ceiling so high I've never seen a game like this on mobile with that sort of difficulty mastering it.
Add to the fact that the handling physics is fucked 308 miles sideways in a golden Jesko, you get exploits and speed tricks like [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hb9mta5h8IM] which absolutely rapes the extra air speed bonus to its fullest extent. Riding on the guard rails and grinding against sloped walls mid-air is considered floating in mid-air, which the bonus speed applies. These tricks are required to get anywhere near the top 3,000 in the leaderboards.
Seeing that the recent Caribbean and Osaka racetracks still take advantage of these speed tricks and show no signs of mitigating it, I think the devs are actually encouraging this sort of play.

God Hand's secret optional boss (The God Hand himself) in the arena. If you can't exploit the by-frame precision of specific moves from Gene while also dodging at the right time every time that God Hand attacks, you probably can never win.
As for modified games, i've tried recently the 4 players hack for NES' Battletoads, and the Turbo Tunnel stage became an exercise in coordination and patience with 4 players.

Natural Doctrine, though part of the difficulty was thanks to the retarded AI of your companions once you reclaimed enemy territory and standing right in front of the sniper in a game where positioning and turn-taking is vital and also friendly fire is a thing, or running straight in front of the enemy, drawing aggro and forcing you to cover their asses.
Gameplay-wise, it was fun at times and had potential, but the AI more often than not fucks with whatever you're planning by automatically claiming free enemy territory.

are there any games that are actually, legitimately hard?
games where you don't get good by memorizing enemy movements, by memorizing where hidden death traps with absolutely 0 allusion are, the developers didn't make a fuck you difficulty, and you don't get good by having >100000 frame-perfect inputs in a row, but, rather, games where you succeed by exercising skill and being good at thinking on the fly?
like, being good at speedrunning sonic 1 is one thing, but being good at speed-clearing randomly-generated sonic levels that were all made by a neural network that was fed millions of hand-crafted unplayed sonic levels would really be something else, especially if the enemy AI is all also controlled by a neural network and is capable of and willing to do things that are unexpected of it

fuck im bad at explaining things; nevermind the part about in the second post about being good
what i meant in the second post was they'd be randomly-generated levels that you haven't played before, and, as such, previous experience with the level wouldn't help you to beat it because there'd be no previous experience with the level, and presumably the neural network would be so advanced that you wouldn't be able to memorize its level generation algorithims in order to be able to predict whats ahead of you
attempting to speed clear a sonic level made like that, except also made to be hard, would be like beating turbo tunnel on your first try or beating the 2hu level mentioned in OP on your first try

Not a really a game per say but Resident Evil 4 with the Rising of Evil mod
It does have a lot of bullshit instadeaths sort of, you come to expect it so it become less bullshit and complete middlefingers (The whole fucking Ashley section in the castle holy shit was that retarded), but it expects you to know and have mastered every single bit of what makes RE4, you even get to learn shit that you literally cannot encounter in the regular game.
And then you find out it completely changes around your expectations by putting new areas (sort of), new exits and entirely different ways to navigate through some sections.
One thing the mod does badly is making enemies insanely tanky but you can fix that with an included configuration file, on top of giving you the ability to stack more ammo and stack grenades, you'll need that.
The mod entirely expects you to beat it from a new game on professional (although you really ought to get the couple of secrets the dev has put in the beginning, even just the silencer is a godsend), even if the first time you look at it it really does feel like you should be using the NG+ stuff, but it's actually really rewarding to manage even just surviving your way to the village (no exaggeration it'll take you a few hours to see the end of 1-1) using the full extent of knife combat, does becomes a bit scary when there's chainsaw wielding plagas / garradors plural intended around but you have to learn that skill or you'll never have the ammo to do anything, forcing you to hit novistadors on the weakpoint with a sniper rifle is mean though (if you don't they simply never die) but it ends up becoming easier after a while.
The best part is that you would think "I can just get myself a rocket launcher if some bit is too hard" but between the dev making rockets ineffective against a few things and the sheer amount of things you'll have coming your way it's simply not an option the vast majority of the time.

I guess gittin gud would be knowing the game mechanics well and having the foreknowledge to build a party just to resist his BS in the minimum amount of time. But in the end you can just grind bro, if you just want to win and want it bad enough. Full disclosure, I never beat the final boss, because fuck that.

NES Contra can seem practically impossible if you put in the Konami code and eat shit the whole game until you run out of lines, but if you play without cheating and try to learn the game, you can hold onto the good weapons and it becomes very manageable. Basically you have to walk into the game with a POSITIVE ATTITUDE.
>>16884551
Even an android couldn't speedrun a Sonic level properly on a first play because you can't see where you're going and don't know the level layout. Any game short of something like a literal IQ test or reflex test will require you to learn that game, instead of just being born good. However, there are lots of games where memorizing what to do at any given point won't even get you halfway there, roguelikes for example. Also: Ms. Pac-man (regular Pac-man can be memorized), there are some cheese tactics that can be learned, but mostly you just have to do it, and it's different every time and not easy.
I've been playing a top-down shooter called Xeno Crisis, which is not a roguelike or roguelite at all really but does have randomized level layouts. Crazy what a difference it makes. If it were static it would be about as hard as one of the harder Contra games, as it is, it's pure evil.

I don't generally see it on "hard games" lists but Dead Cells on 5BC is pretty hard to me. Parrying might fall under the memorizing enemy movements thing but you don't really have to and it takes up one of your weapon slots.

Are we talking about "normal" difficulties? because vanquish in GOD HARD mode is a nightmare.
>>16869580
Didn't find it that difficult really. If you have a good grasp of how the mechanics works then progression becomes very smooth. How you build the MC can also make the game easier.

Say what you want about multiplayer games, but I feel like those are the only games that are really hard, assuming you're playing something with a ranked system. The skill ceiling is virtually infinite because people are the core of the game. Strategies will come and go all the time, players improvise and mind-game you, you'll see unexpected or surprising things that you need to manage. That's true mastery- knowing the game well enough to adapt to anything you encounter.
Most difficult single player games can be beaten through muscle memory and/or memorization (like the tactical challenges in Vanquish, the bullet patterns in any CAVE shmups), or pure RNG if you're playing certain titles (like Pathfinder Kingmaker on the higher difficulties). They don't change or evolve over time, so there's a limit on how challenging it could be.

When it comes to JRPGs I consider The Genius of Sappheiros to be a hard game. With the exception of the final phase of the final boss, it never felt unfair in its difficulty either.

I don't know if the remake is different, but on NDS you can cheese the game pretty hard. Just kill off or withdraw your demons before killing off a boss with your main character as a sole survivor. This nets you a ton of experience and all of the additional level ups you get from that will make everything much easier because of the higher fusion cap giving you access to much stronger demons.

Most games have muscle memory or strategy involved, I guess the sort of experience you're describing would be going blind into a really complicated Visual Novel with a lot of dead ends.

As far as I've seen, recent games;
If we're talking about default difficulty? Pathologic 2.
If we're talking about hard difficulty / perfect scores? HL2.
Older games;
I genuinely forgot how hard Ghosts 'n Goblins was, but I thought it was more frustrating tedium. Still satisfying, though.
Maybe I'm just spoiled by more modern stealth games, but grabbing everything in the Thief games is hard as hell. I love them, but because I didn't play these before modern stealth games, it's significantly harder than I thought. I do enjoy them.

Is Gulp the hardest video gayme boss ever?
>runs faster than you
>fucks with your camera, and by extension your movement, so you end up falling into his direct line of attack
>you have to throw bombs with a perfect line of sight of him otherwise you'll miss, but sometimes they miss anyways if they feel like it
>he destroys all the bombs in sight and you have to wait five minutes before the flying tortoises drop more bombs
>peterdactyls avoid dropping bombs in your vicinity, so you have to avoid a bombardment while making your way to them
>his plasma attacks track you and have a large splash radius so you get hit no matter what
>the bombs you have to flame first take a long while to detonate, and by then he's already moved out its tiny range
>he can eat barrel bombs to regain health
>when he eats the rocket bombs, he shoots it out and by some fucking wonder of science it will home in on YOU
>if you're too close when you throw a bomb, it will damage you
>sometimes the game decides you haven't lost enough health, so you'll spontaneously combust
>he'll step outside of the screen mid-battle and proceed to rape to death everyone you love, and when he comes back he's at full health
>once you finally rage quit, he will do everything he can to make the rest of your life as miserable as possible with no escape
Fuck. This. Shit.

It's a good game but it's not something you should touch until you've already beaten all the other Wizardry games. Even then it will be tough but you will at least have an idea of how the game works. A real troll rec would be something like Death Lord where you have to fall down the same pit thirty times in a row just to get the illusion of progress.

They make integers bigger in action games as well, that's what causes some attacks to deal more damage than others.

Basically have a strange "otherwordly" aesthetic
Marrow is some sort of metroidvania without proper clues ofr guides. And Exoder is a platformer from the same creator (and part of an unfinished trilogy, as the 3 games occur in the same world)
Both game exist in a state of constant fuck oyu. You will be fucked over and die if you done do thexact shit at the exact time.
This is the only full playthrough of Marrow so far.
