Still own any of these, anons?
What was your story with these? Did you play online back in the day? Were you the faggot who had the Gamecube?
I still remember going out for lunch and play Alien Hominid on my GBA SP while waiting for the food and then return to my house to play Alien Hominid on my PS2. Man, those were the days.
I also remember putting Vice City just to hear Vrock while doing chores.

I have six of them, but I don't play anything for it anymore.
>PS2
My phat is haxxed and has a 120GB HDD, but I haven't used it in years.
>Gamecube
Both of my Gamecubes' lasers are dead, and replacing the lasers is a pain in the goddamn ass. Don't feel like dealing with ODEs or other mod functions, though I do have a BBA.
>XBOX
Currently disassembled, waiting for me to build up the drive to install the supercap I got to replace the clock capacitor I removed about 8 months ago.
I don't do much in the way of games anymore, least of all with optical drive systems. I'm currently on a DooM and Quake kick, if you can call playing 40 minutes every five days a kick. If playing with consoles, I prefer the attached systems.

I still own my original xbox. The rubberband that operated the disc slot's open and close mechanism is dried out and no longer works, so when I need to open it I have to lightly tap the top of the console while pressing the button, but it still works. Just last year I booted it up to play all my old favorites like Panzer Dragoon Orta and Jet Set Radio Future.
I sold my old Game Cube and PS2 a long time ago without regret since they're backwards compatible. I play any GC games I want to on my Wii and PS2 games on my PS3. XBox360 is only backwards compatible for a few OG Xbox games and runs them like shit though, so I kept it. Jet Set Radio Future is one of my favorite games of all time and I play through it at least once a year.

Didn't play online, but I bought the PS2 the next day after trying GTA3. Bought the Xbox for all the PC ports and mutiplats. I bought a Gamecube to give as a gift to younger kids, still think it is the best designed console to date.

due to poor optimization, and a lack of active fans trying to get them playable, a lot of early 2000s PC games run like dog shit on modern hardware. a decent chunk of the OG Xbox PC ports have become the definitive way to play those games.
American McGee's Scrapland is a good example, crashes non-stop on PC but plays like fucking butter on Xbox

Got my PS2 and xbox hacked and running games off HDD, replaced the HDD and IDE cable in the xbox for better load times and more storage, also hacked my wii for running endless gamecube games off USB. It's a good time. Maybe soon I'll do a VGA mod for my dreamcast or something.

Here's a question for you anons, which PS2 vidya trilogy do you think is the best?
Am I a faggot for picking the Sly Cooper game? I'm fully aware they're not the best gameplay wise compared to say, Ace Combat or Armored Core, but the smooth controls, the characters, the world, the music(especially Sly's own music sting that shows up in most tracks of the second and third games), the sense of progression in every "episode", it all comes together towards something I've never been able to do anything but love any part of, besides maybe a minigame or two in the first and third game.

The Dreamcast outputs VGA natively for all but a couple games. You just need a plain old cable or VGA box for it. VGA modding the system would be like s-video modding a 3DO.
If it wasn't such a pain in the ass, I'd see about installing SSDs in my Xbox and PS2, but the load time with traditional HDDs is already fine for me. I never bothered with the Gamecube, as I have a Wii, but I didn't bother setting up USB loading with it or anything like that. Not much on it attracted my attention, but I guess terminal burnout from a horrible job is why I don't have the desire.

Shit man, guess I was thinking of some other console. Now I can't remember what I wanted to do to the dreamcast. Oh well, guess it's perfect the way it is.
SSDs sound like overkill in those old consoles. HDDs already load lightning quick compared to disc loading.
I do recommend biting the bullet and modding the wii, though. Wii modding was ridiculously easy and USBloader GX has a great UI that lets you organize your collection in a very aesthetically pleasing way. Not to mention being able to use a GC controller right from boot instead of having to dig out a wii remote just to start up a game is a godsend. There's even some hidden gems on WiiWare worth grabbing now that the store is dead. I think the wii was the first console I ever fucked with and it was a nice time.

putting an SSD in the Xbox would be pointless since it uses IDE connections, it'd be a bottleneck and you'd be wasting your money. running a game off a decades-old IDE drive is still faster than off a disc. the same goes for the PS2 probably.

Only the Gamecube. I don't regret it, although I guess the Xbox would have been cool to have too for some of the more obscure 6th gen games. The PS2 always looked ugly to me and revisiting its alleged classics via later collections, I'm largely unimpressed by the exclusives it had. The Dreamcast was cool and deserved to win out over the PS2, but people tend to buy the worst consoles the most so that's not surprising.

>What was your story with these?
Didn't but at launch, waited for for a few weeks for a $50 price drop. My dad bought this really shitty dvd remote to use with it but we only used it a couple times, I felt bad that the faggot sales prick sold that to him since it wasn't necessary at all. Played PES a lot with friends, had tournaments at my house and used to save the tournament on the memory card so we could have away games at other friends places, which we did a couple times. Had some other nice games like Ring of Red, FF X, Fantavision, Dark Cloud, whatever that snowboard game was, LMA, Sims 2, and I clearly and vividly remember going to the shop after work one night to pick up San Andreas at launch.

I'd consider this to be the last generation of video games that had heart and soul to them before feeling corporate and manufactured, even obvious blatant shovelware and cashgrabs during this time don't feel as egregious as today's smartphone mobile games.

Psychonauts

I still have my old 90XX slim PS2, bought it in 2009 to replace my even older slim PS2. It's still in its box, everything but the console itself is brand new, even the controller, because i bought a bundle that included an extra controller and memory card, i mistakenly opened the ones that came in their plastic packaging though, so i can't resell them to a soyboy for $60 each.
>What was your story with these?
My father bought one in 2002 (fell for the "it's a DVD player but significantly cheaper, also plays games" meme, didn't help that we had a PS1 and a shit ton of games for it, and the PS2 had backwards compatibility), but it died mid 2005. My father managed to contact sony and send it in for repairs, but we got a silver slim model instead, this one lasted until 2009. I bought another one (and a fat PS3) because every single store was offering PS2 and PS3 bundles for $100 to make way for the slim PS3.
> Did you play online back in the day?
Yes, mainly SOCOM but i also messed around in resident evil outbreak. I unlocked absolutely everything in combined assault, played it until the servers shut down.

Nope, but i always wanted one for resident evil zero, of all fucking games.
I still want a fat PS2 to put a HDD on it and load it up with games, but my autism won't let me pick up one from yard sales because none of them come with the original packaging (the huge blue box with "PS2" and nothing else in the middle).

Nigger, I've got the 'tism myself, but when it comes to the systems themselves, it doesn't apply nearly as much as wanting my games to be complete when feasible. Long as it's clean, and working properly, it's enough for me. Or do you have some big wall of system boxes the way some game stores around where I live do?
If you've still got a working fat PS3, specifically the 20/60gb models, you can look into CFWing it. It's not like you can't CFW up through at least mid-era slims in general (and overall it's a good idea regardless), but with the 20/60gb you can use the system's PS2 chip to load pirated PS2 games as backwards compatibility from the drive like you can with a fat PS2. Though, I think I've heard some people claim quality differences between both, and my own experiences with running PS2 on fat PS3 is limited.

Fat PS3 uses PS2 slim internal components, so you will get the same incompatibilities the slim has. Otherwise it plays at a more correct aspect ratio than the slim PS3's emulator, but unlike the Slim's emulator, running it on the Fat's hardware means you cant use usb controllers. If you have rebug, you can flip the software emulator on anytime you want though.

Still have my OG Xbox hooked up and a PS2 sitting in the closet. I lent my Dreamcast without getting it back a decade ago

>The last great gen before shit went downhill.
This. I think the reason why is because 6th gen was the last time a console generation looked like a marked improvement from what came before it. It was the last time where games from the previous generation looked and felt outdated and there was a palpable optimism in the air on what games would be like as the tech behind them grew from strength to strength. This is also why I firmly believe the 6th gen is retro.
The 7th gen that came afterwards was a fucking farce
>promoted as the first "HD" generation even though the PS2 and OG Xbox could output in HD resolutions
>many games were not in actual HD; 360 titles were often natively sub-720p and PS3 was promoted as being "true 1080p" while most games maxed out at 720 and ran worse
>Much of the first half of that gen were games clearly made for 6th gen consoles but with garish bloom/blur to conceal their low poly counts

>Doesn't help that the genres I really like up and fucking died with this gen
What, 2D pixel games? You had the GBA for that.
>only somewhat resurfacing with 8th gen.
Yeah, seeing old genres get revived just to be cucked by some soy-swilling, panhandling faggots sure is great.
>Seems like nearly every bad trend of the 7th gen started here, too.
Only bad thing was paid online on Xbox and Dreamcast, and even then it at least felt like you got what you paid for. The free online on PS2 was bare bones. 7th gen was when it became inexcusable to charge for online multiplayer on 360 when you got the same shit for free on PS3.

>and the next
Seventh gen was a shitshow though, and it was the origin of a lot of the cancer killing the industry now. It started out pretty great but then devolved into publishers releasing buggy games knowing they could just patch it later, games being chopped up and sold as DLC (which also led to the death of cheat codes), a hard focus on multiplayer games rather than singleplayer games, and then XBOX went ahead and started the trend of making people pay to use their own internet twice, which then led to Sony and Nintendo wondering why they weren't going ahead and grabbing all of that free money for themselves.
What a fucking shame. I had a lot of fun in the first two years of seventh gen. I was just beginning to get into online gaming at the time, but that was quickly ruined.

Well, like I have a Logitech PC controller, and it works on PS3 games on the fat, but if I try to play any of my PS2 games it doesn't work. Some supposed "security feature" Sony put in.

Bought a Wii for Gamecube backwards compatibility but it fucking sucks. I swear to god not a single game has proper audio syncing on it but somehow this was supposed to replace your gamecube. I've pretty much moved on to emulation

There were some incredible games to emerge, i.e Battlefield Bad Company 2 and L4D. Bad Company 2 remains my favorite multiplayer experience on console. It’s a shame something like it didn’t exist during the golden years of Xbox live when everyone wasn’t such huge faggots insulating themselves in private chats (pure fucking cancer). OG Xbox live was something to experience, really amazing time to play online via console. My aspergian ass was one of the best ranked players in Xbox CS. Met my online gf there too kek.
But yeah I’m with you, 7th was the beginning of the end. A mix of what could have been and what was to come. Sucks bro.

I have a few of each console. I wonder if Nintendo could've have been fierce competitors with Sony if not for the retarded decision of lacking basic controller features, limited storage discs and not getting people knowledgeable about Online systems.

On the topic of keeping old consoles alive, let's talk about common hardware failures some more. If you have a PS2 you should be aware that the laser often fails as it gets old and you may need to replace it.

>Still own any of these, anons?
I still own all of them.
>What was your story with these?
I almost gave up playing games altogether, but I saw the Dreamcast firsthand at Ozzfest in 2000. They had an armored truck with kiosks set up to play the system, and (I think it was the guys from Pantera) played DOA2 on the jumbotrons. I was pretty impressed, and was sold on it after seeing Phantasy Star Online was in the works. I was always big on Sega games, and for a brief moment it was great seeing them return to form. When they went third party and started putting their games on all the other systems - I had to get them as well. Shame most of the really great games dried up a year or two in and they started crapping out mediocre garbage after their merger with Sammy.
>Did you play online back in the day?
Yeah, played online a shitton on the Dreamcast. Mostly QIIIA, UT, AFO, and PSO/v.2. Followed PSO to the NGC where most of my friends went, and got the modem add-on and even imported the ASCII Keyboard/Controller hybrid from Japan. I also had the modem for PS2, but really only played Everquest Online Adventures while I waited for FFXI, which I then only played while waiting on Phantasy Star Universe.
Xbox I didn't really start playing online until later since I didn't have a broadboad connection until shortly before Halo 2 launched when I moved into town for a new job. Was really looking forward to True Fantasy Live Online, but the fuckers shitcanned it after a fallout with Level 5.
>Were you the faggot who had the Gamecube?
Yes, the purple one, and I had a matching purple GBA to go with it.
I wonder if anybody ever managed to copy and emulate those games that you could download from PSO Ep 2 to your GBA via the link cable?

Sly and Jak are both kind of shit, even Ratchet's kind of mediocre but applauded like gold by furfaggots. Insomniac hasn't made a good game since the first two Spyro games.
