Welcome to SS13: The glorified condom simulator

>Gee, What's the server ip now?

The old thread had a non-working IP on the OP bravo, so we took our time to sort things out and do a new thread.

We're now testing the waters with a new server, it's running CEV Eris's code.

Honestly I'd be fine with that. Cloning is way too OP. Without it even if their body is completely fucked into oblivion you can still take their brain out, turn a monkey into a human, plant the brain in the new body and do revival surgery. It'd make it so that pod people or strange reagent are the most convenient ways to revive, and medical is the most solid. It's only weakness is that it wont work if there is no brain, but if that's the case then you can't do any other form of revival except maybe pod people if you got the persons blood somehow.

I'd still leave it in the game though just because people would complain.

Games too obscure. Most of those games that got a reverse engineered clones/ports like build engine games or TES have a massive following of autists. SS13 is open source so it'd be much easier than other games. The problem is to make a clone that would do it absolute justice it'd need to be done by someone who already has an extremely deep understanding of the game, which only a fraction of the player base even has. I assume most people who tried knew all the jobs and played them but does not grasp just how deep the mechanics can go. Not to mention shit like deep space, which most people don't even realize is in the game. That plus majority of projects die just look at /agdg/.

The russian jew station is some kind of unholy autism hell. It took me like five minutes straight of chanting and dragging dead radroaches around to produce one canister of biomatter, and then the biofabricator refused to produce the bandages I needed to stop the agonizing pain that was making me constantly vomit because "not enough materials", even though I had over five times as much as it needed.

Equipment degrades. Flashlights have power cells that run dry after about two minutes. Why is this abomination in second place on that poll? Who would willingly subject themselves to this torture?

>You think it'd be easy

You'd think wrongly and that's not even half the reason this is hard to pull off.

SS13 depends substantially on some proper structural simulation, especially ATMOS and how gases operate but also the electrical network (that's frankly quite simplified compared to IRL) and pulling this off not just in a way that doesn't tank performance but also actually interacts with the game and remains somewhat scientifically accurate, that's quite the challenge. In fact, for engineers one of the hardest things you can try to make is a simulator for gas mixes and their interactions. Now pile that on top of airflow, combustion and other mechanics and you've got something you could make a thesis out of.

That's just the Engineering department, mind you. There's every other department that have their own specific content and how it interacts with everything else to take into account.

More specifically, and I'm sure that most people don't even think about this much, how every item and piece of furniture actually is coded to work and do something. There's plenty of checks and balances and ideas behind it all to make it work.

Finally, you have to consider that SS13 is a mixture of 2 games. A Station Simulation and a Murder Mystery, happening at the same time. Players join the station and mainly play the Simulation at all time, roleplaying their role and handling the station to keep it working while at the same time there's traitors with the objective of violently interrupting the first game and make it more interesting, forcing some players to now engage in a cat & mouse chase.

The way both of these games is structured as well as the way they interact with each other is crucial to make SS13 work and be the game it is. And SS13 handles all of it kinda bad to be honest, with great rounds being quite rare.

A successor to the game would have to take this into account and possibly even make a better version of something that has had several iterations already and is the best we've ever gotten so far.

Now, the worst issue is something else.

Those with the skills to pull this off are likely working full time at their job anyway, so they won't have much time to dev on it and those with free time will likely not have the skills for this. So you'd need someone with time AND skill to do this, but you're not going to find someone like that who works for free.

Personnaly, I believe that a proper sucessor to SS13 could easily be sold for 10$ and it'd find a very large playerbase ready to pay for it (if anything, Lifeweb kinda proves that point as well as all the perks you can get in TG)

But perhaps nobody else believes that and so they lack either time, skills or motivation to work on it.

We've seen plenty of remakes being attempted and inevitably they fail because they lack one of these 3 or they start with them all but after a while lose one of them.

Only problem with cloning is that, just like pretty much everything broken or OP in SS13, it's free. It only costs some time and electrical power to clone someone and you can severely cut the time down with upgrades or cryo and energy doesn't even matter most of the time.

Now, if the cloner consumed something like synthmeat or some other chemical to actually create the physical body, maybe with different results if you used better or cheaper materials, it'd be another story.

Suddendly you'd have to prioritize some people over others due to limited resources, maybe some guy matters a lot more and he gets the good stuff so he is cloned faster and correctly while assistants get the cheap mix and are half-cloned with some brain damage.

As long as it's free, it's a no-brainers choice, especially since the time it wastes isn't even yours but the guy being cloned.

>>16804404

>Flashlights have power cells that run dry after about two minutes.

That actually sounds rad. The bugs you're mentioning are a bummer but making everything a tad less simple is great.

You're using shit batteries. The flashlights start with bumshit Asters100S small batteries that have absolute no life, buy some 200S from vendors or the guild merchant or find some 250/300S in maintenance, they're not that rare and they make the flashlight last for up to an hour or more without needing a recharge, plus they work great an impromtu charges for a PDW like the Spider Rose or Martin laser pistols.

I'm so fucking proud of finally having done this. It's not shown, but this is all networked, the shooting, the projectile, the movement and even the dismemberment.

It's a hallmark not because I get to watch some badly drawn humans get blown up with a simple taser shot but because this 99% concludes the logic behind clicking and using items.

There's some clunkiness to the movement and no aiming animation yet, but I'll get around to it. I'm also tempted to change it back to first person since I believe I can now solve the performance issues, but I worked a lot on the code behind wall-hiding and I find it easier to roleplay from a top down perspective since it enforces that it's your character and not you in the game.

Now I just have to redo a truck-load of code using everything I've learned all these years and I'll be ready to tackle engineering.

You don't use the Liquid biomass for the Autolathe, you use Biomass Sheets which are generated from another machine in the same room, at the top left.

You connect to it by moving a container of Biomass to the top of the machine and click-dragging the container to the machine, then clicking on the machine to start the process of generating sheets. These sheets can also be used for other things like ammunition for the Janitor's NT cleaner's rifle.Funfact: Biomass is the deadliest poison on the station, church-people aren't supposed to kill anyone except in self-defense due to their religion though

Also don't use the biomatter machine unless you're properly suited for it, you need to be an Acolyte or any other church worker that isn't the Priest wearing the full suit of armor they come with to not suffer from extreme radiation sickness after using the machines.

And you're wrong in how hard it is to obtain biomass. ANYTHING can work as biomass as long as it's organic, be it growns from the Garden which the church owns, chemist/bar liquids, dead bodies, non-synthetic or armoured clothes, food from any food pile, etcetera. It's much easier to massproduce Ambrosia Vulgaris leafs and Watermelons to feed it than to go into maintenance and eat shit to roaches.

I didn't see any vendors, and I was the only one on the server (aside from some guy who was apparently catatonic and being slowly digested by fungus) so there weren't any merchants. Maintenance had nothing but hordes of radroaches (which went down with a couple of crowbar hits, but apparently even slight scratches are fatal if untreated and there weren't any first aid kits anywhere) and fungus that occasionally spewed clouds of poison gas; no items of any kind. I wouldn't complain except that everyone apparently spawns deep in maintenance with radroach hordes right outside the starting area. Either that or maybe the 0-pop server was completely overrun by mobs after 6 hours? But the only exit from the cryo chamber I spawned in was clearly labeled "Maintenance", so why are you talking about "going into" maint as if it were optional rather than mandatory?

I was a church janitor. Didn't get any kind of armor, didn't see anything in the top left of that room but a mop and bucket. The bucket was the only liquid container I'd found up to that point, and it was the only reason I was able to even try to make medicine for the light bruises that were constantly spamming me with "you are in crippling agony" messages. Didn't see a garden, chemistry room, bar, corpses, or any food, but I didn't really get a chance to look. Again, the cryo chamber I spawned in had exactly one exit: directly into maintenance with radroach hordes and carpets of poison fungus. I only stumbled across what I assume was the place where I was supposed to be working by sheer luck. And the wiki doesn't say anything about the biomatter machine being radioactive, only that you'll die if you turn it on while you're still inside it.

It's been nearly a week, so my memory is a bit faint. I'm pretty sure I went through that hallway between the cryo rooms, but thought that the stairs were just a weird-looking wall, or possibly shutters. (You have to admit, they look more like big venetian blinds than stairs, at least if you don't already know what they are.) As to getting through maintenance, all I remember (as far as navigating goes) is accidentally climbing over the edge of a platform and falling into some kind of pit, searching for a way out of it, eventually clambering up somewhere else, and finally stumbling across the east entrance of that room with the tank you dissolve bugs in. Don't recall seeing any ladders at any point.

You literally just have to make 2d a gas simulator then build a top down game around it. Instead it's always retards starting with mechanics that will have to change if they ever get to the complex parts due to optimization, or retards changing the game without caring for the impact.

because it's literal spergs throwing ideas around without someone wrangling them and giving a good scope of which features to keep, what to change and what not to fuck with.

Now you have dumb fucks autistically polishing out specific aspects without actually building the core. Fast forward 3 years and they will still be figuring out pipe pressure.

I hate to say it, but isn't that how our glorified atmos simulator came to be in the first place? But I agree that spergs need a firm, spergy guiding hand in order to ever turn out a finished product. Not a good one, I mean, just something you could ever call "finished."

Have you ever touched code in your life?

Rewriting anything that does a non-trivial job is a pain in the ass, even when dealing with sane dev environments.

SS13 runs on an engine held together by spaghetti and prayers to the old gods, implements a lot of stuff weirdly to work around engine bugs/limitations/performance issues, and the people willing to put up with the epic amount of bullshit involved in understanding the code can easily tolerate the game as is.

they reworked how defibrilating works too, there's no defib timer but now if you die your organs start to decay and if your heart decays enough you can't be defibbed anymore until it gets replaced (organs heal on their own extremely slowly when you're alive but otherwise you can't heal them except with botany chems that nobody ever makes)

if you're dead for any longer than like three minutes you get enough lung and liver damage to just instakill you as soon as you get defibbed so you have to replace basically every single organ if you're defibbing somebody who didn't die right outside of medbay

rounds on tg are messes that usually only last like 30 minutes so unless it's an extended round or a round where the antags don't bother killing anyone the medical doctors won't bother to or won't have enough time to revive most of the people who die

i really don't like current tgmed and neither do most of the players there but the headcoder thinks it's great and it 'makes medical more engaging' or something so it's there to stay no matter how evident it is that nobody likes it

TG's current head coder literally wants people to stop playing the game. I dunno if that means a certain type of player or literally just wants player numbers to go down. I understand that this is because he wants to transition to MRP. I dunno. I'm kinda of the opinion that removing commonly used major features in a game with a stable player base is a great way to kill it, even if it's part of some big coherent plan to revolutionize the gameplay (which this isn't). It's kind of a hobson's choice, though. Making medical more engaging means making it harder, which makes the game worse for anyone who needs medical. But if medical is boring, next to nobody will play it long enough to be any good at it. It's the same kind of problem the Wurm thread identifies with mining: it's an absolutely vital task but one that makes for terrible gameplay, requiring some autist to take a bullet for the game to work.

I play medical a ton, and in my experience, the boring rounds are the ones where antags bomb medical because the cloner is a phylactery that keeps resurrecting the dead. So I'm not exactly teary-eyed at the prospect of losing access to the Life Insurance Machine that spits out gibbering retards if science is too lazy to upgrade it. When it reaches a point where Botany is able to develop necromantic powers then its time to really re-evaluate the revival mechanic.

In most medical situations, 50% of it is automated and the other 50% patients take care of by themselves because of how easy it all is. Pushing shit to surgery isn't "making it more interesting" because surgery is literally just reading the computer and then selecting the right tool. If you want to make medical interesting start by implementing some kind of education level system that restricts you from doing all but the most basic of medical treatment if you aren't playing a medical role.

I think that TGMC tries doing that. I honestly forget if they yell at people for doing jobs they shouldn't know how to do, but I know they have a stats system. Unless I'm mixing it up with the other and more populated Ayy vs Marines server. I would hope that for LRP servers stats wouldn't get implemented in ways that would result in greyshits wasting resources. It's absolutely certain that nobody is going to wait for a doctor to heal them based only on the argument that the doctor uses the medical supplies more efficiently. The doctor doing things faster or in ways that the assistant can't is a stronger argument, but the latter one starts compromising the idea a bit.

Botany already can do that. You need to grow holywater melons, mushrooms that create unstable mutagen, and ambrosia deus for omnizine. Then you can just inject dead bodies to revive them. The problem is by the time you get all this shit together the station is either so fucked it doesn't matter or the round ends halfway through.

I worked with BYOND but I never wrote C#, I know C though and they're similar in syntax.

DM as a language was made for children, which made it accessible but gave it a fucktarded syntax and shoddy feature set.

It's not uncommon for people to find that the special syntactic sugar for one case doesn't work well on others, so they literally have to go and beg Lummox to implement support for it on the engine (which is closed-source).

With a proper engine and a proper language you could avoid all the workarounds and dropped features that plague SS13 codebases, and I bet that C# runs much faster than DM does, the former has industry-standard interpreters and the latter is a faulty scripting language made by a handful of guys in their garage.

>>16840698

As opposed to what, though?

Unity is the most accessible general purpose video game engine on the market right now.

C# isn't hard because it's interpreted C with garbage collection and objects.

Unity is complex and feature-rich enough to allow for any feature you'd like, and simple enough that any moron could use it.

The reason why Unity has a stigma in the gaming industry is because the entry bar is extremely low and consumers associated the engine with low-quality shovelware on Steam.

SS14 initially used Godot but dropped it because of problems I forgot about, something about being inflexible with the rendering and shit, read more here:

https://spacestation14.io/post/19_05_12_progress-report-15/

SS14 has an in-house engine so if you don't want to use Unity, there's that.

It's not dead in the water either, it's currently the primary remake for CM, the most popular SS13 derivative and community right now.

Forgot to mention that BYOND is a single thread 32 bit engine from the late 90s that is server sided to the point of being maddening.

Any modern remake is going to implement proper client-server separation like Carmack figured out decades ago.

A problem is that it allows for proper cheats to be developed, like ESPs or traitor detectors and shit, but that's a price that most will be willing to pay.

Yeah, that's kind of obvious. I'd actually suggest setting a bit of free time aside to practice coding with it, rather than just going off your knowledge of C.

Best to have firsthand knowledge when the subject comes up in discussion, right? And I can testify that it's possible to compile C# on Linux, although you'll need to set an environment variable or two to disable Microsoft's telemetry when adding their repo.

Here's the thing, Unity is really high level. That means it's easy to do stuff but really hard (if not outright impossible) to make stuff that runs well. On top of that if doesn't have any support for 2D, a 2D game for unity is rendered as a 3D game with a fixed camera, which isn't exactly ideal if you need performance.

That said,

>As opposed to what, though?

I honestly don't know, Godot would be my goto since other Engines aren't as optimized but if they already tried it then maybe Unity really is the best option, despite being ill fitted.

BYOND is extremely high-level as well, even more so than Unity would ever hope to be.

Back in the day an SS13 codebase had to implement their own fucking object deletion system because the in-house garbage collection was too slow, it's present in almost every single SS13 codebase to date, which speaks volumes over how shit the memory management of BYOND is.

If you want to know more look for qdel() and nullspace in most codebases.

If Unity 2D is exactly how you would describe it, then why would it be that much of a hit on performance?

I mean, the only graphics you'd be drawing in 3D is a single quad, with the contents of it calculated in standard 2D fashion, that seems like a minor overhead to me.

The thing about Godot is that it was tried in one remake (SS14) and dropped because of rendering issues, and there's only 3 active remakes being worked on right now, not a large sample size.

One Unity remake is in full 3D so it needs Unity (or any other 3D engine but we're not talking about those right now), and the other had its engine set in stone right from the get go.

Godot might work after all but there's just nobody working on it right now.

There should be a stage before "critical" called "shock" that you go into after, say, 30 seconds of 50 or more of any damage type where you can still move and talk, but are incapable of complex actions due to the pain/blood loss. And if you aren't playing a medical role you have a high chance of leaving yourself or others with a lasting condition that has to be treated by an actual doctor. So you can still survive alone, but ideally if a doctor is available you'll prefer that they treat you.

My experience with godot is both limited and very much unpleasant, so take it with a grain of salt.

Documentation is a nightmare, with a single Github issue more often than not telling you all you needed to know while all official resources are outdated/missing/completely wrong: in particular, I remember getting extremely confused by a major tileset change that was apparently ignored for more than a year by the guys writing the docs, despite far less important tileset changes since then having been documented properly.

Bugs can be pretty serious, I remember 3d navmeshes being horribly (and silently) broken and that lead to a lot of fruitless debugging of pathfinding code.

Shading uses its own incomplete flavor of GLSL, with no support for constants and a nice sprinkling of other annoyances.

I wandered over to see what TG's been doing lately. They moved genetics to science with the rationale "research belongs in science." As much sense as that makes, and as little as being a geneticist has to do with anything else in medical, my problem with it isn't the fact that everything interesting is now concentrated in science. It's really more that any change made to that codebase just feels wrong, as if it was being made purely in bad faith. Apparently it was also mechanically badly done, too: most maps were just half-assed, partially because there's some new RP role's office that someone wanted some of the space for. The role was never finished, though, so everything's in shit limbo. It's really these "we made this change in preparation for this other change at some unspecified future time" that's hurting development in that codebase. Maybe players will be chased off into populating other codebases so that they actually have players and updated wikis like TG did.

Why the christ did TG steal VG's paramedic idea and then go on to remove cloning and make the whole "go get dead people too" part of the paramedic pointless? At least they renamed a bunch of medchems so that they don't sound quite so completely stupid. They attempted to make the names functional so that they remind you of what they do, which I appreciate greatly, but did a shitty job of it. No surprise that even the good ideas are badly executed. Considering I literally never played med except for genetics once in a while, I can't explain why I have all these strong feelings about the department.

The "go get dead people too" part is still relevant since you can still revive people through other means like surgery and defibrillators.

The renamed chems sound extremely silly to me, they used to be Star Trek references (and still are on classic servers), but instead replaced them with shitty, stilted, overly long names that half-assedly spell out what they should be used for.

But then they still have hidden caveats that you need to remember anyway so that you don't accidentally poison your patient, if you can remember those, then why not an easily pronounceable and unique name?

IRL most medicine names are just brands or neologisms that don't mean anything, tell me what internal logic the name "Ibuprofen" follows for example.

>>16851379

Can't you just order more blood from cargo?

Or does TG do that differently?

The servers I play on start with a fully stocked fridge of blood, and let you order crates with bags, each with enough blood to restock the fridge once.

Also, the "it's a sci-fi game" excuse doesn't really stick with SS13, it's a game that has cloning and nanobots in the same settings as miners with pickaxes and nuclear codes stored on floppy disks.

It's kind of a "realistic retrofuturism" in a sense that new technologies exist alongside old ones, read that in the design doc of the 3D remake and it made a lot of sense, even if it wasn't initially intended as the game grew and changed.

The TG reworks had the purpose of making medical more involved and difficult to perform to curb greytiding and make life more risky.

One meme on the /vg/ server is "killclone", which is the practice of killing someone and speedcloning them, basically bypassing 90% of medical gameplay.

As someone who likes giving people IVs and surgery, I fucking hate that meta, and I'm glad that TG has decisively killed it off.

Nah, it's a thing you only really hear second-hand but even at that I don't think it's a fabrication. I think a person would have to go dig through PRs to find what originally made people start talking that way. It may've just been a "if you don't like it go elsewhere" comment but I understood it to be a bit more pointed than that. But, regardless, the medbay changes are stupid and shortsighted. If they even have an end-goal it isn't clear what it is, although I've heard that it's to force more RP. You can't force departments to cooperate by hamstringing one of them and expecting all the others to get together every single shift to fix it. There isn't some mythical playerbase out there that will do this every shift because shifts go to shit too quickly for it to be worthwhile. Engineers get their jollies entirely out of doing the same shit slightly differently at the start of each shift, but doctors don't--especially when they're actually doing would be begging other departments to do things for them. This'll just lead to doctors being unprepared for casualties and getting shit on by the crew for it. If it's harder to bring crew back, shifts'll just end even faster.

This game is open source and BYOND's language is shit but pretty easy to read. It would take some effort, but that's just the price of gamedev.

The problem, though, is that people currently like and play SS13. If you don't authentically port everything that people are already used to, like the robust combat, then you don't actually have SS13. Instead, you have some other thing that may or may not actually attract players, of which SS13 already doesn't have huge numbers. But if you do just clone it, then you're just dragging over all the limitations imposed on the game by BYOND. It's kind of a lose-lose situation. The way out of it, like you said, is to create something that is in its first incarnation better than SS13, so you immediately attract current SS13 players who just like spessman games, AND has enough meme content to attract people who played the game in the past and didn't like where it went. But if you don't do it right immediately, you won't keep your playerbase because SS13's already a thing that works. That's the problem with trying to create "X but better" when there isn't a huge market for X, as some anons have said.

I like how Eris handles this: If you die in Eris, there's no cloning for you unless you belong to the NT church and have a cruciform on you. So paramedics have a reason to get critical people in some maint tunnel on that maze of a ship to medbay and if they fail, atleast they can put the body in the morgue so that the person can respawn faster. (You can respawn in Eris if you die but you have to wait 30 minutes and play with a different character, storing corpses in the morgue reduce the timer by 8 minutes. You also used to be able to make space funerals which reduced the timer by 15 minutes but that was removed for some reason.)

c2daff  No.16862872

I'm guessing shifts on Eris are probably pretty long, and the respawning dynamic makes it unable to be compared to TG. It's a major dissimilarity if you can guarantee that a player can get back in the game 30 minutes after dying versus TG, where you either fuck off to a special role that (probably) won't affect the shift or are totally reliant on other players not being fuck-ups to get you back in the shift. Taking a player out of a round (CEs tossing shitters into the SM, for instance) used to be a big deal, but now any killing is likely to result in taking someone out of the round. I dunno. The idea of making medical interesting so that people actually do it is of course a good one, but if they fuck up then medical ends up even more useless than it was in the past. It just feels like a major thing to put in their usual "toss shit at the server and see what sticks" development approach–but they don't know how to do anything else, so we're stuck with what they arbitrarily decide. Then again, I quit, so it's more or less just armchair development from me at this point.

>that was removed for some reason

Both reductions combined (assuming they stack) means shaving respawn time from 30 to 7 minutes. That's quite a big difference, enough to make it exploitable.

As long as you have a friend (so metagaming here has another tool) you can be easily "revived" at a very short interval, therefore bumrushing dangerous targets, scouting where you shouldn't, sacrificing your body, etc are all perfectly feasible since you can come back so easily and more reliably than cloning or the Medbay since there's far less effort involved.

The way it makes death inconsequential plus some likely rounds where the traitor was found because he had barely any time to act in 7 minutes before his victim came back are likely the reasons it was removed. Still a bit much and it reinforces corpse hiding for traitors to the detriment of dead players, which is shitty. But still, can't expect much from a feature bootlegged from LifeWeb.

>>16862872

The problem seems to be that there's no incentive to stay alive. Dying and coming back are so trivial there's no point in trying to keep yourself safe or even bothering with all the healing content. It's often easier and faster to just finish the job and clone the guy.

What if there was some kind of bonus that grew as long as you were alive?

The game doesn't feature attributes or skills, but if it did, you could have some attribute growth based on your actions (and optionally your diet, making the chef and food more useful and interesting) or practicing skills that let you perform better.

But if you re spawn, you start from the start, putting you behind anyone that has been alive longer than you.

Even better if you could keep these advantages between rounds provided you escaped alive from the station, giving an incentive to do so instead of just suiciding, AFK'ing or doing something stupid in the shuttle.

c2daff  No.16864371

>>16863896

There's plenty of incentive to stay alive. Once you're dead, you're totally at the mercy of the rest of the crew versus just waiting even the relatively long 30 minutes to respawn. All you can do is hope that: crew's competent enough to find and clone you; the cloner isn't dismantled or sabotaged; unfriendly factions haven't locked down or bombed medbay in general; and you actually get your turn before the shuttle gets called. I admit that in a real emergency is isn't likely that you'll have 30 minutes before things go too much to shit, but medbay being a priority for bad shit and deaths not occurring in isolation during problematic times means that cloning isn't some get-back-in-the-shift-free card.

The problem of there being incentive for medical staff to kill and clone is a totally different problem. For the dead player, dying and coming back isn't what's trivial. What is trivial is, from the doctor's perspective, the alternative of kill and clone versus doing their job correctly. I admit that it's not an easy problem to solve. Relative to surgery, cloning took almost no resources other than the dead player's time. That by itself is a powerful incentive. I don't know what the right design is, but if there's a choice between a long, involved process and a simpler process with hand-wavingly similar results, it's just human nature to take the latter one.

The problem with incentivizing staying alive artificially is that it empowers already strong players and will create even more angst about cheap or stupid deaths. If the incentives were nice but not actual advantages over other players, that might be all right. I frankly think that players are mostly already scared enough of dying on average, and you have the occasional powergamer who doesn't mind taking advantage of the system–much like the rest of the game. Besides, you need players to be willing to risk their life in order for some events like blob to work. I dunno. Like most people, I don't have any answers but I have plenty of opinions about what's not the right thing to do.

I have the same sensation about tgstation design that I do about Stone Soup. It may not be accurate, but it feels like someone or a group of them grabbed the game by the throat and now are dragging it in some new and weird direction. For a long time DCSS was the only game I knew of that regularly removed features with each release, then this shit started up. With Stone Soup it actually looks like the people doing it have some unifying idea and direction and it seems to be moving in that direction. I can at least understand that even if I don't like it. TG feels similar, only without the unifying direction thing. We just have promises that there's some goal folks have in mind. They've been flailing around trying to fix med for I don't know how long now, and what we have to show for it are lost features and, apparently, blood drives. If I at least felt like these people had some minimal idea what they were doing or what they wanted to accomplish, it might not be so disappointing.

>you're totally at the mercy of the rest of the crew versus just waiting even the relatively long 30 minutes to respawn.

But that'd be even worse with regular medicine, since you'd still be at the mercy of the same crew to use a much more complex process instead of dropping a body in a funny locker and pressing a button.

If they are unable to do even that, actual medicine is beyond them either because they're too incompetent or because there's something big happening anyway.

>cloning isn't some get-back-in-the-shift-free card

That's precisely what cloning is and the trump card of many power gamers. Just the vanilla version of it can already resurrect a veritable army to fight off anything on the station, provided the corpses are dragged back.

You can even pre-scan yourself so that isn't even a requirement. And you can upgrade it too so it scans automatically, revives automatically and does it faster than a medic can brew enough chems to heal you.

If it cost something, that'd be a different story. I recall some ideas about spending synthmeat to clone someone, but I dunno if any server ever implemented that. Even then, it should be something more costly than that.

>The problem with incentivizing staying alive artificially is that it empowers already strong players

This isn't necessarily a problem, strong players already have plenty of advantages and can easily do whatever they want to newer\weaker players. If anything, letting you specialize your character towards something would help with this, not make it worse, by giving you a reason to cooperate with players that specialized differently than you.

>If the incentives were nice but not actual advantages over other players

Not actually possible, unless you mean cosmetics that get old fast and don't really solve anything. Any incentive given seletively (i.e. not to everyone) requires that whoever got it has now an advantage over other players. Anything else and you have a participation trophy, not an incentive.

>I frankly think that players are mostly already scared enough of dying on average

I think this is only due to what they are trading with the game in case of death: time where they are not playing.

Someone sitting down to play a videogame, especially one as interactive as SS13, expects to actually interact with it and have some agency. Sitting around merely watching isn't all that fun and goes against the whole point.

This is why players are "scared" of dying, because it literally means not playing the game from that point forward.

You solve this by giving them a better trade. Instead of a long time sitting around watching, you can respawn much faster at the cost of character progression. As in, if you're cloned or healed, you keep the character you had and any bonus accumulated so far, but if you respawn instead, you start from the beginning. Even in death, you still have a choice and respawning times can be lowered quite a lot without it being unfair since the player is giving back to the game something else instead of time.

You can think of it as the same mentality behind roguelikes where you have permadeath and character progression. Good incentives to stay alive, but you shouldn't be so attached to your character, especially when you can restart so easily. Roguelikes often have the issue that the early game ends up being repetitive and boring, but that's something that SS13 easily solves by it's very nature, so there's really no reason not to apply the same idea here.

I keep repeating this because I believe it's true (without evidence), but the headcoder and cronies want fewer people playing and to transition to MRP. Legitimate complaints about med being boring by longtime medbay players were taken to mean that departments weren't cooperating enough: like how most maps have too few stasis beds with the excuse that you can ask engineering and science to build you more of them. This in a game where it's usually simpler for botany to steal a chem dispenser from chemistry or tech storage rather than get people to do the boring parts of their jobs. I guess the idea is that people who don't want to work together will quit. Given how short shifts tend to be–and maybe that's another thing they think they're fixing–science already doesn't have time to get deep into xenobio, and trying to do it is the reason that they never upgrade shit. I can't even get a camera console for upgrades most of the time, because I like science and yet tox and xeno and everything are uninteresting. Maybe janitors should be subsumed into engineering or science as maintenance personnel and be expressly responsible for upgrades.

What really sets the scene on space station 13, what really makes it the game it is, is how everyone more or less tries to pretend like every zany comical thing happening in the futuristic chaos erupting around them is completely normal, and then try to incompetently do their jobs - usually badly, while ignoring the series of disasters as it all went up in flames around them. The dramatic irony between the deadpan crew and the dumb retarded shit that happens constantly was one of the things what makes the game funny for me. The silly gimmicks or people who found clever ways to kill people and antag successfully are the cherry on top. Cloning helped to create that atmosphere of paranoia and deadpan comedy. Because if death doesn't mean anything, why take life seriously?

There was a reason this stuff was added, and it wasn't so you could slip people and lock them in the DNA chamber then turn them into a tourettes-riddled ADHD monkey to grief them into inarticulate preteen rage.

Originally bringing people back to life was an exploit by turning them into a monkey then back to human again using the genetics lab but the masses cried out for real ways to get back into the round and so it became.

I think that serious RP fits well into SS13 as long as it's a form of satire.

>>16865838

It's funny that the Miners were an actually good way to implement department cooperation and yet they never managed to implement something similar to anywhere else.

It's very simple, you make a department's role be both self-beneficial but also benefit everyone else. Miners get their credits to spend on neat shit they need\want while Sci finally gets their minerals.

Once they introduced that credit system, every round there were materials for Sci where as before, it was pretty common for a Scientist to just make a Ripley and get the minerals they need since literally nobody else would bother.

>Given how short shifts tend to be

I remember many years ago, once I finally figured how to handle the Genetics RNG (that doesn't matter anymore), playing 3 rounds in quick succession that never lasted longer than 15 minutes each. First was Wizard, who died really fast, second was NukeOps, also ended up short and the last one I finally got about 3 powers at 15 minutes (no upgrades there) and the shuttle was called by a traitor with nobody recalling.

That was 3 times where I did the boring part of the job and once I was ready to have fun with those perks, the game just ended. After that experience, I stuck mostly to civilian jobs, where you can actually have fun with no busy work right from the start.

I honestly don't know how they plan to fix any of that when most jobs hide cool content behind busy work or RNG and the way the different gamemodes are structured, you won't really have much time to use anything you make or care at all about anything. Why fix the station? It will reset. Why heal\revive? Players will respawn soon. Why RP beyond the bare minimum? There's no character development or consequences for being a complete asshole beyond meta grudges.

>if you don't do it right immediately, you won't keep your playerbase because SS13's already a thing that works.

Well put and applies to ALL areas of life. It's like basic decision theory or something.

>>16864371

It's a time frame thing I guess. The guy you're responding to wants hour long rounds probably. So there is decision making going on based around whether it's a 20, 30, 40, 50 - 60 or 70 - 90 minute round.

If anyone wants to actually improve the game: gather data. Record how long a round went write a few notes about what went down, how fucked up it was, were people cloned and medbay active, what behavior was more common, and what caused it to be that short/long. Get about 10 of these or more and start gathering some obvious insights you get from that.

This advice is mostly for people who can't figure this shit out in their head, of course. Though for games that are out of the ordinary it can be useful to anyone – an hour and a half long game when the server is rather active; what happened? How? Why? Was it fun? What was fun? What would make it fun?

If you ask good questions you can gain actual insight, so follow the template then once you've gotten through some boring stuff, trying asking good and creative questions (creativity can be often times boring, by the way).

More on point: Drawbacks from cloning can incentivize regular physicians work. Being unable to speak Common only Gibberish, only able to walk or sometimes slipping and falling randomly or dropping what's in your hands, and being a bald bitch can do that; have all of these symptoms fade away over the course of say 15 minutes and we're good. If there's some RPG style stat system then you can reduce this # down to say 10 minutes, or even 5 minutes if the RPG stats are quite impactful. Some botany and chef stuff could "make the soul more comfortable in its new body" and reduce this timer perhaps (add salt and pepper folks) and 'comfortable environment and activities' (no blood nearby, well organized diner, music, no trash everywhere or trash actively thrown away could affect things, cleaned by janitor/mop/spray environment, library with books in it, reading, no one dying nearby, etc) could also accelerate this timer/symptoms.

>>16864749

Fuck it. I've been on this server for 3 years and I'm jumping ship. Time to find a less shit server.

Don't they have a way to heal organs or replace them with anything besides cybernetic ones, though?

Because I like the idea of damaging internal organs, it's actually neat to have some extra consequences for damage that can't be so easily fixed.

But their effects should be inversely proportional with how easy it is to cure them, so either severe effects that are cured easily or simple effects that take a while to fix, the second option being best since default damage already does the first.

This reminds me when /vg/ added Bay12 medical system because it was a really deep and complex one but forgot to bring a lot of assets to deal with all the problems they imported. The result was a station full of bleeding people that didn't had any way to actually close an open wound.

pretty much everything seems to rely on chems or surgery and surgery cant fix toxin or organ damage, except brain damage. the problem is you cant do much with a corpse. it would be nice if you could slap a corpse in a cryo tube or something like a washing machine to rejuvenate and cleanse the body, then try doing a revival surgery.

i dont mind more complex in depth systems being added, but i hate the constant trend of removing things, putting in poorly thought out replacements and then refusing to fix it. heck they could just make a blood filter machine that you hook up like an iv and it cycles the blood out of a body, filters out non blood, and then puts it back in. a large part of them changing medical had to do with them wanting to lengthen round time and give medical a more in depth job, but it seems like it just made round times worse since people die and start spamming vote restarts since its almost impossible to be revived if more than one person needs medical at a time.

after going through and reading the tg forums i actually agree with that guy who says that they are actively trying to drive people away

You can do burgers, so I'm guessing the admins are on the pocket of big burger.

>something like a washing machine to rejuvenate and cleanse the body

That could be the Sleepers since that's essentially what they are supposed to be. If they are inspired from Alien for instance, keeping a body intact until you can do something with it would be an easy function to include instead of simply being free chem dispensers.

>they could just make a blood filter machine that you hook up like an iv and it cycles the blood out of a body

I thought that was already in the game? We had IV drips for a while and they could change mode to draw chemicals from the body as well as blood, or at least the last time 8chan had a server, we had that.

Did they remove that crap too?

It's so heavily pozzed that there's no point to it. Even Baycode and its many offshoots are better off these days.

I'll probably host a server/share my VGcode offshoot in some time once it's semi-done. Likely after I map a pair of original stations for the map rotation.

Does anyone have any old as fuck codebases saved? There's https://github.com/Ameliorate/OpenSS13-1.0-Revival and https://github.com/nullbear/Goonstation_SS13_r4407 but I'm missing some material inbetween. I'm looking for a Goon repository around ~2009-2010 after they've upgraded the OpenSS13-era sprites but before they've moved onto Uterus station. One that corresponds to the following "release": https://web.archive.org/web/20161231170253/https://code.google.com/archive/p/gs13/source/default/source

Which is completely empty apart from a few configs and two nondescript maps, which are updated versions of OpenSS13 Donutstation.

Pff, right on the mark. This is the likely reason they got suspended, according to their own forum. Just like that other project that was removed because it had "retarded" in the code (when actually it was about retarding an effect)

Some no-coder jannie that only CTRL+F projects for "bad words" and instantly flags the entire codebase, doesn't even bother sending an email so it's probably outsourced to pajeets even or fully automated. Then again, it could just be the rainbow-haired "women" that were hired to be involved with coding but the only thing they can read is comments and names and act on those.

Even more funny is that Paradise avoided this shit by putting a less memetastic name to the item. Furries managed to be one step ahead of /tg/, for fuck's sake.

Even better, their next option is to change to Gitlab when they are likely going to find something like that there too.

Because things like item names or descriptions are part of the source code too and because having a base that you have to merge with external resources voids the entire point of using Git in the first place.

It's stupid anyway, them for still using Github without being woke enough to stay there and Github for using automated tools\pajeets\"coder" girls to handle these things when none of them even grasps the concept of context let alone care for it.

>>16908373

There's a cabal of faggots and women that contribute 0 code to any project that still get a voice people hear for whatever reason. Some of them actually have more lines written in comments on issues and commits than actual code written by them.

These morons want to be "part of the industry", joining the new white colar job but they have absolutely no talent for it so they do the equivalent of community manager for a coding community.

The thing is, in order to feel like they matter and keep that impostor syndrome at bay, they have to do something, anything at all. So they do what they actually care about: police what everyone else is doing to make sure everyone feels welcomed in the site.

It's really not petty, it's far worse. There's some fat whale with hair painted with all the shades and tins of pink actually browsing popular repos, looking for anything "that might upset underrepresented minorities" and will flag that repo to be blocked\removed if it finds anything they can grab it by. And they feel like they're on the same level and status as someone writing their own graphical engine or database analysis when they can't even write a Notepad mockup.

There was that controversy surrounding Master and Slave disks\partitions before, there's the Code of Conduct that they were trying to force programmers to sign (I think Github does require you to do so) that's just a lot of "we can delete everything you make for whatever reason, including no reason at all and complaining about it means we can sue you" or some such shit.

The only good thing is that they are rotting and getting shafted all the time because of this attitude. Smaller guys stop using any service that has these idiots while bigger guys are not bullied by them and give them shit.

>Spawn as chemist traitor as relatively new player to the game

>Make polyacid smoke hell grenade and a slip'n'slide space drugs grenade, took like 30 minutes because I wasn't used to it

>Go to bar, wonder how the fuck i'm going to kill the goddamned chief of security

>See clown in the bar

>Having given up on chasing after security and winning the game, I instead decide to mess with the clown instead

>Chat him up, throw slip'nslide grenade at patron and we all laugh at it, even the guy who got pranked

>Gave him an "extra party grenade"

>Steal a drink bottle that the bartender left on the counter like an idiot

>Dip my cigs in Space Drugs

>Go back to lab and mess around with chemicals and firebomb recipes because i'm still not familiar with the game

>Coms are fucking going off like crazy but I didn't notice for a while since I was busy checking the wiki for chem stuff

>Come back just after I'm done making a functional fire grenade

>Realize comms have a huge log

>The clown's been murdering his way across the station, and from my first inspection of the bar it was full of polyacid dust

>Apparently he threw it at security and fucking got my target for me and had been running since, killing everyone who came after him

>Holy shit

>I get back to the medical area and find him bleeding, carrying a bloody crowbar and toolbox, he's all fucked up

>"That wasn't a party grenade"

>Throw firebomb at him and run the fuck away immediately, actually get him with it

>The problem is that now I have a clown, on fire, with bloody weapons now chasing after me

>Got to arrivals and he collapses from the damage after he's hit me a shitload of times with a crowbar, great timing too since he tripped me

>Get up, steal his weapon, beat him to death fully

>Drag his dead ass to a nearby locker and weld him inside with a welding tool I stole early on in the match while siphoning fuel from the tank for a firebomb that didn't work

>Patch self up after limping back to medical, literally meet no one for the rest of the round

>Get on arrivals as soon as the shuttle's called

>Despite fulfilling all of my goals as traitor, I don't think I won that round

That fucking clown, godspeed to you wherever you are. I only "won" because of luck.

The only way to access it consistently is being on the discord.

Thinking about it, they should've made the server open during the weekend long ago. Maybe I'm having remembering it too fondly for not being ColMar.

I still don't want to go to CM though. Their mod team is full of sociopaths, their balancing principles are insane at times (Weapon's base damage is settled through RNG at roundstart), and in general the server is just too big.

I totally undestand I also would like to try something fresh.

I think CM was ok when the tank was not nerfed. Marines would advance to caves and get maimed there or win. The aliens could play well there and kill/capture the marines and then kill the tank as a punishment for their bad play.

Nowadays is either metarushing or its going be a crappy match were you less than nothing if you have are a private, maybe if you can use the Jtac, but again very laggy and hard to control a proper CAS run (also the noise advise the aliens 5 minutes earlier).

Also the crappy infrastructure moba system is retarded.

I really need to take a breack from that server, but CM is such a peculiar game that every time I change server I fucking have to read a book to not be squashed for months.

Don't play assistant. The entire job is based around making fun out of what little you have. Play a miner, doctor, scientist, engineer or something. Medical has had sleepers removed, forcing medical care to either be done by hand or not done at all. Then they removed cloning. If you're just a brain, you cannot ever be revived; you are forced to become a borg. If robotics refuses to make more borgs, or if they don't have the parts for it, your game is over. Then they took genetics away from medical, citing "abuse," and put it in science. It was also nerfed (but at least the UI is fucking usable now). Medical is now literally no more advanced than medicine of today. Manual healing, sometimes taking five minutes or more. Then defibrillator to revive. What's that? You replaced someone's organs and healed their wounds and defibrillated them and they came back as PINK TEXT SSD? OH BOY, YOU WASTED ALL YOUR TIME AND THOSE LIMITED RESOURCES!

Botany has had all genetics removed. You can no longer get gaia or mutate any plants at all. All you do is grow food. And you have to maintain everything by hand since there's no gaia.

Suggestion:

Cloning becomes very unreliable, causing degeneration of limbs and organs (preferably those that were damaged/destroyed in the player's death) that ideally will then be replaced by cybernetics. (Or by cloned parts i guess) Parts missing from corpses to be cloned would increase the likelihood of genetic drift, and a missing corpse would all but ensure you're coming back as a kikewheels.

This would make cloning less of a braindead EZMODO player replacement system, and would require Medical personnel to intervene with surgery to get the player back to complete functionality. However, cloning would STILL get people back into the game immediately, and would not completely necessitate further surgery, you're welcome to get back to your job with your shitty gimp arm or missing liver.

If nothing else this gives more RP opportunities, incentivise tators to hide and destroy corpses even if the player they killed was already scanned in, and nerfs Cloning without making it totally unreasonably hard to unkill a guy. Thoughts?
