On several occasions Iv tried to get into, as Im playing it right now. My thoughts are that leveling system is boring. To be blunt. Either grind fates, grind dungeons or do potd. My main complaint on wow is that it was in decline from the end of BC, it peaked at Ulduar and gradually one bad decision after another has got you wow it is today. I've been playing for 6 years, got all 29 jobs at lvl.80, done every quest, got every mount, minion and a mansion. I play it on PS4 and on PS3 before that. I own it on everything but i just prefer it on console with a DS4 and the crossbar since i'm so used to mainline FF games on console.
At its core there is a major dissonance which people love or hate: This is not an MMORPG, this is like it says on the box an online mainline Final Fantasy. You will be playing with other people, you will group up and do stuff but first and foremost it is a mainline entry in a jrpg series. People see the hotbar and go 'hey this is like WoW' and that colours all of their expectations of it. But its not an open world, its zones just like FFXII, its not X character for Y role. You have a character and that is your account. it is the warrior of light and using the FFV/XI job systems you meet people, learn new jobs and can swap on the fly.
You will notice across the board the people who enjoy it are fans of Final Fantasy, from the 90's in particular, people who hate it are fans of World of Warcraft. If you ever enjoyed a Final Fantasy before the shitshows of 13 and 15 this starts slow and 25-30 is the fucking worst the game ever gets but it keeps getting better and Shadowbringers main story is the best Final Fantasy has been since FFIX. If you go in expecting a FF game with multiplayer you are probably going in for a good time.
But if you are a WoWfugee looking for a breakup rebound this isn't it. The hotbar combat will always have you going "but the gdc is slower!", "but raiding is far less of a focus!", "but muh puhvuhpuh!" and so on. Its not Rift. Its not trying to be WoW. Its just a guy who liked WoW a lot and took combat control elements from it but it is still firmly a Final Fantasy first. If you liked how good FF used to be you will enjoy it. If you are looking for a WoW reskin now BfA is hot trash you are looking into the wrong game.
Mostly because its not a 'only level cap matters' race to sit in a single instance on repeat for 9 months to chase gear. People play triple triad, race chocobos, decorate their houses, level alt jobs, just generally fuck around in this virtual world. Its not really the epeen 'look at my gear score and worship me, pls this is all i have in life' replacement.

Except it wasn't, it's in every expansion, ARR has the ever popular titan questline which is literally you running around doing odd jobs because they needed an excuse to level you. I know the other expansions do too, but it's so par for the course by the time you get there I can't even remember it.
Syncing is also the worst way to handle level sync I've ever seen. "You like your rotation at max level? Fuck you have 2 abilities because someone is running satasha, don't want to let you have too much fun doing the roulette now".

There are only two choices you make about your character before combat. It's your character's class and cross class skills. And the cross class skills really don't make much of a difference. Every DRG is the exact same like every PLD is the exact same. There are no builds to try out, no different ways to play, and no retarded ideas you could come up with. You just press the buttons in the same order every time. It gets really exciting when there are 3 or more enemies because then you press a few different buttons here and there.
The story is a bit better than mediocre in a few places, but it has enough filler quests and arcs to make even the most veteran anime producer blush.
Do yourself a favor and play anything else, this game is a complete waste of time unless you're already at max level and doing the newest content. In which case it's probably a waste of time anyway, just I haven't tried it nor will I.

Gonna give you the benefit of the doubt anyways. MMORPGs, whether they're "free" to play or subscription based, do not respect your time. You are much better off finding an offline game with a high time/money ratio.
But if you do actually want to see if you'll enjoy the game, FF14 allows you to play up to level 35 for free. This requires absolutely no monetary investment, but it also covers two of the five worst slogs in the game's story progression. The first is Minfilia giving you the runaround just before and after the fight with Ifrit, wherein you will have to take multiple superfluous trips to and from the Waking Sands. The second is the buildup to fighting Titan, which among other things features you having to travel across all of Eorzea to gather ingredients for a feast. It is absolutely an excuse plot, and it drags on for far too long. I wouldn't blame anyone for being turned away from the rest of the game by it.
If you actually complete the game up to the point where you need to buy and subscribe to continue with the plot, and are still interested in doing so, know that the game will almost immediately throw the third slog at you in the form of the buildup to fighting Garuda, the fourth slog in the form of the two 8-Man Dungeons, and the fifth slog in the form of the 100 Main Story Quests between 2.0-2.55. Once you've gotten past that point, the rest of the game is more or less smooth sailing.
But, again, I wouldn't blame you for being turned away long before that point. The only thing I can absolutely not recommend is paying to skip any of it. If you don't like the game, dumping even more money into it is just going to make it worse for you in the long run.

You can change jobs whenever so its worth picking them all up. I enjoy Dark Knight a lot because you are just an aoe monster swinging around a edgy greatsword. Paladin is boring as fug and Gunbreaker doesn't have as many fans as expected but Warrior is also great i just prefer DRK because it has a lot more ways to effect big pulls while WAR is very directional.

I can't tell you. RDM and SAM were that last sub 60 jobs I had and iirc it took me about a two weeks to cap them. DNC took me less than a week to get to 80 bickers Trust, FATEs, and roulettes. You can grind PotD if you can handle the monotony and you should be able to hit 50 pretty quickly. Also BLM is a lot more involved than that. Since you are a pretty static caster you will have to learn how to handle leylines and using the movement skills to bounce around while keeping Enochian up while weaving Foul/Xeno in with Thunder. Umbral soul makes things easier than ever before.

Taking away a bunch of the damage mitigation skills really just leaves you with three oGCD and then a few skills that are really only useful as off tank. Tanks and Healers usually get fast queues, so you don't need to worry about needing to take friends/guildmates in with you. Conjurer/White Mage is the only healer available at the start, but you can access Scholar by leveling an Arcanist (DPS) to 30 and doing all of their class quests. Astrologian and Dark Knight for that matter are locked behind Ishgard, so you can't access them for a while.
As for leveling to 60, provided you've unlocked Palace of the Dead and either have a group willing to go in with you or are comfortable with carrying random players, you can probably go from 1-60, or 30-60 for Jobs locked in Ishgard, in 1-2 days by nolifing it.

SE removed battleleves after they said something like only 5% of the playerbase actually used battleleves in any meaningful fashion. It's why both SB and ShB don't have them.
But to wit, soloing FATEs is perfectly possible, if slow (get a FATE party going; it really improves the experience). The only FATE you won't be able to solo is the obvious boss fights and certain defense ones (mostly because ShB defense FATEs sometimes spawns a ton of mobs onto the NPCs you're supposed to defend). If you find yourself unable to do FATEs, then either get better gear, get a friend, or consider POTD or HoH.

There's nothing wrong with you liking XIV, but it's dishonest to sit there shitposting away at people telling you in good faith the reasons why it's not a good MMORPG. There is next to no impetus to interact with other people outside of the duty finder, fights have given instructions, your playstyles are prescribed to you, and like you say, the only real difficulty comes from the other mouthbreathers you can't control getting you killed. Socially, it's nothing more than a glorified chatroom, gameplay wise it's one of the most mediocre multiplayer games out. All that it had going for it is the FF label, XI assets, and addictive functions lifted from other games with none of the fun.

It would be okay as a free game, or maybe even a reasonably priced buy-to-play. When you feel like it, you have some time to waste, you log in, do a couple of the absolute dogshit, mandatory main quests, then you realize that it still sucks and go away to play something else. But when you're paying $15 monthly for the privilege to suffer, you might as well go back to Planetside 2, it's all free, all the same pointless timewasting, with less trannies.

The Burn
A SAM, a RDM, and a PLD.
All 70+
No other jobs W/M/H/L
All in Scaevan gear unglamed
The SAM refused to acknowledge mechanics existed at all. Would move for no AoE templates, continually attacked mist form mist dragon, and only did basic rotations.
The RDM refused to cast AoE magic and would only cast a few single target spells before walking up to the enemies and slashing them. They also refused to acknowledge the existence of veraise.
The PLD refused to use any damage mitigatation skills outside sheltron which, regardless of the situation, he would cast the moment it came off cool down. He also refused to use tank stance as well as AoE attacks.
The run concluded with just under ten minutes remaining on the timer as the green DPS/Tank finally managed to defeated the mist dragon after slogging through the entire run without wiping despite realizing early on that healing was utter futility.
Zero commendations were to be had.
