These were the 4 games I had on my PSP and I loved them dearly.

I had battlefront 2, colin mcrae rally, some capeshit game, spiderman 3, sonic rivals, tekken 5 dr, gta liberty city stories and at least 10 more games that I forgot now. PSP has some good games, but doesn't have any "great" library like ps2. PSP also has lots of visual novels and it's a JRPG machine for some reason. Very underrated console tbh

I thought psp couldn't handle ps2 stuff. For example spiderman friend or foe is all same at pc, ps2, xbox etc, but in psp it's a different game

I played alot of metal gear, ace combat, castlevania and patapon.

Actually, the graphics were pretty similar but they had to change the free roaming around the school and town to being 2d instead of 3d.

So only in the dungeon is everything 3d.

I'm assuming this was done to conserve space.

I've had 2 acqauintances with these, both had pirated games. I remember one game was about some jet planes flying at low altitude and another was about some ninja shit. Wasn't even interesting to look at.

I know man. At least the Kenka Banchou guys gave us NOT-GTO with Gachitora who spends his time pretending to be Onizuka while hiding that he's still a Yakuza instead of a former deliquent. Pretty solid if you like the Kenka Banchous.

As for UMDs, for the time being they were nifty but going with cartridges for the next machine was the only sensible idea. Too fucking bad nothing else made sense about the Vita but I guess Mark Kerny needed to practice before making Knack 1 and 2.

I'm not sure how easy it is to break one, but I've used mine consistently for about 7 years now and it's fine.

Then again, I take really good care of my stuff and the screen doesn't have a single scratch on it.

I have yet to replace any of the buttons or the stick either.

This. I had The Sims 2 on PSP and the loading times were awful. And, it sometimes just crashed during these.

Something about the way PSP's 3D graphics rendering works makes it all look very flat and dull. The PS2 also suffers from this.

I have a psp, and it should also be noted that is has some good bundles, like Genesis, Atari and Capcom.

I'm still surprised Sony went with an optical disc player in a portable device, especially one that was aimed in part for kids. DVD readers worked in laptops because they were primarily used by adults, but you still had to keep it relatively flat to use comfortably which avoided potentially reading discs at bad angles. A portable handheld game console can and will be held at all different angles which is a great way to scratch a disc.

For reference, the psp has a very low software to console ratio, at around 3.5-3.8 between different sources(mostly some wikis and vgcharts) which sits it only above the gamegear and wonderswan. From, what I know too, PSP homebrew ramped up pretty early on, so it would have affected most of the life cycle.

That's what I figured, but I never followed PSP homebrew. It doesn't help that Sony sold the console at a loss expecting to recover the losses via software sales. (It worked for PS1 and PS2 due to their massive sales in both hardware and software, but it's a huge risk.)

I had a DS in late elementary school, middle school and in early high school. The various randos that came by me mocked me that it sucks and all kept saying how superior the PSP is, but they would ALL say it's better only for the graphics. They couldn't recommend me a single game.

The psp immediately when released was able to run unsigned programs. Most of the patches were a carrot and stick game between sony and modders, so yes I suppose OP's premise is invalid. I'd like to throw in say that the PSP had a big library, but I guess a lot of people didn't find its library memorable. I bet that aside from homebrew, a lot of people were took in by its multimedia features before smartphones were mainstream. I knew a cousin who had a psp and just used to watch videos, I don't think he played a game outside of GTA on it. Compare that to the people I knew who had a DS, at least 2 pokemon games and then assorted other big titles and some small ones.

I got mine in 07 and my entirety of gaming exposure at the time was gamestop and X-play. I was never actually in any communities while the PSP was still an active product so it being used from emulation was entirely unknown to me until it was long dead because I never really cared until relatively recently.
