The next Shantae game is going to have an animated intro from Trigger. I guess this is where all the budget is going. Wayforward is also claiming that it's going to have a 2019 release, but the series isn't known for sticking to its initial planned release dates. I don't know why they're doing it now, of all times, unless 1/2 Genie Hero actually made them that much money. Pirate's Curse was the best one because the pirate powers were instantanious and didn't require you to stop gameplay to do a fucking dance mini-game/animation. You could easily chain together multiple powers, and levels could be designed which took advantage of that. Shantae for GBC was good for it's simplicity of design compared to later titles, with the only glaring flaw being that the attack animations leave very little room for error - making each engagement an exercise in risk/reward in a game with respawning enemies. This was never really fixed, since later games give you far too much reach with the main attack. HGH was mechanically sound, but being a kickstarted project fucked it by front-ending all of the development resources into the first few levels which were used to advertise the project - and everything else is anemic, and a ton of unnecessary and poorly implemented that levels weren't designed for just to satisfy arbitrary stretch goal promises they were never sure if they were going to have to honor. Though this was somewhat made up for in DLC, but only somewhat because it didn't fix the main game - and you had to pay extra for them.
Risky's Revenge was just kind of shit out there because Nintendo was throwing around cash to entice developers to make DSi games, and WayForward kind of got fucked by releasing the first game at the end of the GBC's lifespan. RR had no budget, no inspiration, very little direction, and was really just there to round up the books while they worked on more profitable licensed projects.

Pirate's Curse and Risky's Revenge are like the opposite sides of what I like and dislike about Metroidvanias. In Risky's Revenge, the stages didn't really have anything to stand out and it's a giant chore to backtrack. Especially the dungeons which look all the same, and if you take a break from the game you're pretty much lost with the level design specifically asking for an item that might be out of the dungeon you're in or at least in a far off area which again is a giant chore to backtrack.
Pirate's Curse has distinctive levels, and when fetch quests are necessary they at least make sure to make it interesting and more importantly make a few optional in the beginning so as to ease you in with the mandatory fetch quests which are more interesting story wise than in Risky's Revenge. But more importantly, unlike RR and in some Metroidvanias, PC gives you a sense of direction. You always know of what task to complete (get on the ship, and beat the boss, repeat) unlike in RR, where after a cutscene they give you vague hints on what to do so you have to wander until you reach the next item that triggers the next objective. And when backtracking is necessary it's always short or at least right after you get a new ability which makes said backtracking easier. Not to mention some of the levels were more distinctive than in RR, (Run Rottytops Run). And don't forget Pirate's Mode. Pirate's Curse is just beautiful game design and after finishing it 100%, it's one of my favorite Metroidvanias I've ever played.
