They did a remake on Switch that added a massive sequel bait cliffhanger at the end.

I didn't understand the point of it. It's like you just fight rounds against hordes of dumb opponents using awkward stylus swipes. I don't like this at all, it's both boring and annoying. A fighting game needs smarter opponents and also better controls, and there's plenty enough buttons on the DS to not need the stylus. Actually I pretty much hate games that require stylus, unless it's like a point & click adventure or something like that. Arcade games should use standard controller, instead of that gimmicky stuff.

Why not just a button to toggle between the characters? Anyway to use stylus you have to move your hand from the other controls, so it's not as efficient.

But that's wrong, you retard. You used your left hand for the top screen (using the dpad) and your right hand for the bottom screen (using the stylus) or vice versa. You play them simultaneously with your eyes on both screens.
