If you want a Jewish answer: Pay once to get in, then either pay for tokens for continues or you can pay for a voucher that would let you have unlimited continues on any machine and/or cabinet in the place for the duration of your stay.
If you want a real answer: Arcades will never become popular again, outside of the possibility of a bunch of hipster faggots getting together and producing their own arcade + bar and grill so they can play shitty jazz music and serve lattes to fellow hipsters who totally remember Castlevania 2.

Unfortunately, a large number of surviving arcades are dropping actual games and taking ticket gamblers instead. Just went to a local arcade I've been going to for years, almost everything that was an actual game was gone. Instead, it's those pushing stick games, ball drop games, other games of chance, mobileshit in an arcade cabinet, that kind of crap. The only thing I would tolerate out of that is skeeball, which mostly stayed. There's only about 3 actual games and 4 pinball tables in the whole arcade now. It's just a sign of the times, I guess. We aren't the kids they're trying to market to anymore, and the kids of today like instant gratification of ticket machines.

I think you might actually make a better point then where I was going. I honestly don't know if kids even like these games as much, or these places are just desperate for more money and this is the scheme for it. It's just weird to see how it has evolved over the past decade of me going there, the change of almost all ticket gambling was literally over the past year, so I don't know if this change is permanent.

Like Japan has arcade versions of BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, Pokken, Tekken, etc. Combined with the fact that new gameplay experiences aren't being developed and you have a dying out of touch industry. What I hate the most about them is their implementation of the card system. Instead of putting actual money into the machines, you need to load it onto one of their cards. The best part is they seem to have it so you have a tiny amount left to make you come back and not waste it. Makes me so pissed off that a lot of arcades are following in those foot steps.

Modern arcades should have the latest games and systems, then charge you a flat rate to play anything you want for a set period of time. I think it would be a great model because it would allow people to try games out on the latest hardware without committing to a purchase, but the prevalence of F2P and microtransactions undermines this somewhat. Still, I think there's a market for it.
