From what I've seen over the years, it's probably more a case of being debatable. Still, I find it a bit odd that Matrix Software is more than capable of making good games, yet they were also the port team for some of those really off looking Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy mobile ports (including FFVI). I'd like to think they themselves would have known better than to think stretching pixels or mixing resolution quality would look awful, and/or had Square-Enix as their hiring company forcing such visual issues (MS being their bitch at the time), but who knows.

space exploration adventure pseudo-RPG
the hero wants to leave his home world, from which space travel is forbidden because of a dick of a planetary governor. He hires a space coyote to get offworld and the adventure begins
throughout the game you'll discover galactic phenomena, fight space pirates, collect loads of mod-able starships, amass a huge crew (whose roles on the ship you get to assign), etc etc
rather text-heavy but solid story. Combat's got a learning curve but you'll figure it out in time
I find myself disliking 2 things about it: there's no reason they couldn't have used buttons in combat (forced touchscreen), and the sound balance in combat is off (explosions are fucking loud while the voices are softer than the music)

This might just be the game most deserving of a remake that there is. It suffers greatly from various limitations, most of them technical. Moving the aspect pieces around is really tedious due to how slow the DS is. Fix the horrible "inspect every pixel of the screen to find each hidden interaction point on each screen" nonsense. Sometimes it's things that you can't even see. And on some maps the inspect button doubles as the attack button, so if you press it in the wrong super specific part of the screen you perform an attack instead. Sometimes the above two flaws are combined, like in the numerous grassy fields near the start. Spend minutes going through each field just to get a "oh there's an invisible ant trail here" find. The framerate is bad, like in most 3D DS games. The resolution is terrible, wasting all that pretty decent work they did on the characters. Yet at the same time it's one of the most unique games I've played, with tons of good ideas. It could be so good if it got a proper PC remake. Mouse control for the many touch menus, faster flipping through pages and less inconvenient aspect management would go a long way.

I enjoyed 3 more than 4. The farming is just as good in addition to not wasting resources for dumb boys over more girls.
As someone that played RF1 and RF2, they weren't really bad. RF is just a series that got better with QoL and gameplay after each game so people that played RF3/RF4 probably got spoiled by the added features when they went to back the earlier ones.

Gonna recommend a few games
>Go Go Cosmo Cops
Fun "puzzle" game that makes full use of the stylus, it never got an american nor a japanese release even though the game was made in japan and is fully translated to 5 languages (english, spanish, japanese, german and french).
>The Legendary Starfy
You guys like kirby? This game is more or less the same.
>Aliens Infestation
Sidescrolling 2D shooter made by wayforward, plays like metal slug.
>Resident Evil Deadly Silence
A port of the first game, main game has no changes but it features a new first person arcade mode that makes use of the stylus.
>Bangai-O Spirits
A bullet hell where you control a mecha, absurdly fun but rather easy (compared to the 64 original and the 360 sequel at least) and the framerate tends to shit itself whenever you fill the screen with missiles.
>GameCenter CX 2
You guys do know the show, right? The plot is about (you) running into a deity that looks like arino, and he sends you back in time to 197X japan, where you end up meeting little arino and he invites you to play some games with him, some of them are a little bland (pacman but you can attack with elemental rods, literally just karateka) but the rest are absurdly solid, it makes you wish they had a standalone release. The goal of this game is advancing through the game generations until deity arino sends you back to your own era.

3db0eb No.16620927

I'd say it's more than a pseudo-RPG, but you don't get traditional battles and leveling like traditional RPGs. Rather than leveling up your characters, you're leveling up your ships and crew. Each battle rewards you with cash and experience that gets distributed throughout your crew who are assigned to active posts within your fleet. So while you can't customize characters/crew themselves - you can customize your fleets stats by assigning appropriately skilled crew members, or crew members with useful skills, and leveling them up.
To add to the complaints, though, there's no journal function which - I didn't find particularly cumbersome since the game had me enthralled start to finish, and I couldn't put it down, but if you take any sort of a break from it - you could well end up being completely lost. Combat is also completely broken once you get launchers. There's also a fairly OP fighter I picked up from a sidequest fairly early on in the game (Laterno? I'd have to check my game) which is fairly damaging, good at dodging AA, and is an absolute HP tank. Couple that with a couple really good pilots heading up their squadrons, and you'll tear through enemy defenses. Combat is already a fairly shallow rock-paper-scissors affair, and what the fighters allow you to do is to load down your fleet with long distance weapons - then pin an enemy with your fighters (you can't advance or retreat when harassed by fighters) and then just pummel them with barrages while sitting outside of their weapon range. Most enemies assume you'll be fighting at both long and short range, so even if they do hit you with a barrage you fail to dodge, it'll only be 20~30% of their arsenal - while you can hit them full force every time. Good pilots will allow you to cut through their fighter lines and AA damned neared instantly and stick it to them.
Ship to Ship boarding parties are kind of a joke as well, again with simple rock-paper-scissors type combat.. except more reactive. It's a cycle of weaknesses. Shoot > Melee > Command > Shoot, so you just have to pick the command your enemy is weak against and hope you have the crew numbers and a good security officer with some decent special attacks to wear the enemy down.
The game definitely has some flaws that need to be cleaned up, but I think the overall package with ship/fleet customization, first person dungeon crawling, and light adventure game elements more than makes up for the deficiencies even if you ignore the story, which is excellent.
Not to spoil too much, but it starts off as a kind of coming of age story with an adolescent anime protagonist thinking he's going to go into space and the power of friendship and his resolve is going to allow them to create a miracle and save the day. Well the game kind of kicks him in the dick, and he ends up getting used by every two-bit tin emperor as a cheap mercenary force in their provincial regional conflicts until a real threat shows up and steam rolls everyone. Then the second half of the game then picks up years later when Yuri is a grown man fighting niggers on a prison planet and planning an escape, this time a hell of a lot wiser, more cautious, and realistic. Kind of turns the whole early 2000's anime tropes on it's head.
Lord Roth is a fucking Bro, btw, and Nele's got amazing tits

Good luck finding a physical copy. I mean that. Sega completely fucked up sales expectations and underproduced the cartridges - so for the longest time, even used copies were going for over $100. I heard a third party was able to reprint the game and put more copies out there - but it could still be ridiculously expensive due to (((collectors))).
I got lucky and happened to get a launch copy that caught my eye. I just saw Sega and Platinum's name on the box and decided to take a gamble, since I liked Bayonetta. But it's neither a Sega or Platinum game - it's all NudeMaker, and just licensed/published by Platinum & Sega.

Not really a must-play but since we're mentioning some lesser known games I'll throw this one in too. Couldn't find myself a translation patch for it but Maplestory DS was pretty fun to mess around with. Ironically the movement system in the handheld version is superior to the original which is a strange thing to say. Could've had some great potential if they didn't make it into a such a story-heavy, linear game and just stuck to a more open world similar to its mmo counterpart

I felt like looking a little into the DS library and I'm surprised at how many RPGS and games with interesting-looking settings and possible stories there were on the thing. A lot of them look intriguing, these are the ones I'm looking at now so if anyone has any information or opinions, feel free to shout them here. At the moment I'm only looking to get/play 1-2 of them, but that might change.
I already have the DS charts but they don't seem all that comprehensive.
I'm a bit more of a story/characters fag but obviously the best "overall" ones would be appreciated most. I'd prefer it not be too casual either.
