Please help me remember a dos game from back in the day. It was an FPS, linear game much like the first Doom and had an assortment of weapons as is common with those games.
I seem to remember something about a castle and gates. I don't think it ever became a mainstream franchise as I'm pretty familiar with the wave of games that came out after that generation.
I've tried looking at lists of FPS games for DOS, but I still can't find it.
Maybe y'all would appreciate memory lane.

Also I think the story world was not so much demons but monsters. I don't remember any magic, but I think I remember a rocket launcher.

Was it Strife? Heretic and Hexen also took place in castles but they didn't have weapons similar to those in Doom.

Need more data. Your explanation fits 70% of all games of that era. Maybe you remember something about he graphics? One enemy? One weapon? One anything? Color scale? Option screen? Death screen? First level "feel"? Just about anything helps.

If it was as movement-dynamic as Doom, i would say Quake or Hexen
If it was more close to Waxworks or the Elvira games, i really don't know

I would hope not since it's at least well known there, but I can see some resemblance. Regardless it's a game worth playing.

Was not Strife. Looks cool as fuck though.
Heretic looks to have the same weapons as Strife. Also not it.
Not Hexen. I don't remember any melee weapons, nor magic.
I'd compare the guns to Unreal Tournament, but maybe I'm remembering UT.

This has to be it. I remember the pistol. I don't remember dual wield, but I think maybe I just forgot or never picked up two? I don't know. The rocket launcher fits my memory. And the amount of gore. I really think this is it. The walls and gratings fit my memory. Dude, I've got to play this again.
THANK YOU SO MUCH

Although it looks great before the action starts, and then actually starts to look fun again as it goes on…. Worth checking out I guess.

Hmm I think im confusing it with shadow warrior.
Egg and my face are in alignment.
Although your trailer shows a much more modern game than the mid 90s game OP is asking about.
Im confused.

ROTT is almost as well known as DOOM and Wolfenstein though. A lot of people still play it, and they even made a shitty remake a few years ago.
How did you NOT remember it? And how does "castles" and "gates" stick in your memory, and not the ludicrous powerups like Shroom mode or Dog Mode?

Faded to the walls and guns.
I was maybe 10 when I played this game, and my online communities (when I joined them a few years later after getting the net and discovering Multi-player) didn't talk about dos games.

The song is "Goin' Down The Fast Way", remixed for the 2013 game by the guy who did the music for Dusk.
Don't know who composed the MIDI for the original game though.

Most tracks, that included, were composed/arranged by Lee Jackson, but a few were done by Bobby Prince. A couple are based off of classical music. Both it and the remake have stellar soundtracks.
