996db3  No.16505153

I'm currently playing through Vagrant Story and it's quickly becoming my favorite JRPG. I'm only a few hours in but I'm having a blast. The atmosphere is oppressive and creepy yet strangely calming at times, especially when you're in a workshop. Disassembling and combining weapons and finding out what you can come up with is also really great, I feel like I could spend forever in the workshops. However, the thing that's really drawing me into the game is the combat. I can't stand traditional turn-based JRPGs, but Vagrant Story sort of real-time-with-pause feels absolutely perfect, and performing multiple combos is really satisfying.

I know that Parasite Eve has a similar combat system, but are there any other JRPGs that have combat like this game?

Combat wise no. But if you haven't already anon and you like the atmosphere of Vagrant Story you should definitely check out the rest of the Ivalice games. Though granted none of them really get AS dark as VS.

FFT takes place in Ivalice right? Are there any other FFs that do also? I'm not a fan of Final Fantasy by any means so I'm not sure what the deal is with any of them really. Are there recurring characters/locations and shit in the Ivalice games?

>>16505166

>Parasite eve is the only game that comes close to it. Nothing else to it.

Well fuck me, that's unfortunate. Square should have really done more with this type of combat, it's fantastic. I haven't gotten around to the Parasite Eve games yet, but I know the second one changes things up a bit combat-wise. Is it drastically different from the first one in that it's much more a Resident Evil-esque survival horror or is it more of a combination of the two gameplay styles?

The weapon affinity system is awful. Either you ignore it entirely and deal with doing shit damage, or you take advantage of it and combat becomes a clunky mess of weapon juggling.

>Are there any other FFs that do also?

Final Fantasy XII does and was developed by a lot of the same staff as Vagrant Story. A recent update to Final Fantasy XIV the MMO added a whole section of FFXII to the game as well as characters from FFT as well if that counts.

>Are there recurring characters/locations and shit in the Ivalice games?

Aside from the XIV content and non-canon cameos like Balthier from FFXII being in the PSP port of FFT not really but they all share a very similar tone and atmosphere that holds a special place in my heart.

The same artist who was art director for all the Ivalice games still works on the Bravely games if you really like the artstyle of these games as well anon. I'd recommend the first Bravely game to anyone regardless of their affinity for the JRPG genre. Avoid the second one though as I'm pretty sure it was butchered by (((localization)))

Yeah I remember playing this a little while ago but not having enough time to get into it, I made sure this time not to touch the controller just so I could fully check out the beginning cutscenes. Zodiac Age is by far superior since it adds the content of the International Zodiac Job System edition of the game. Enjoy it if you give it a go anon, it's really good. Especially if you love Vagrant Story.

Oh one more thing I'll add regarding XII. "Gambits" are meant to be active on your party members only if at all! Don't have them active on the character you're playing or the game practically plays by itself, I think a lot of the people who hate this game didn't do this and that's where a lot of the criticism comes from.

Certainly one of my favorite games of all time. I only played it relatively recently a few years ago when someone made a similar thread here. I started it and was so taken in that I stopped because I had a friend visiting / staying with me for 2 weeks. When he got here we started a new file and basically co-oped the entire game (sans secret dungeon).

We basically had to use every scrap of intelligence we had and often had to discuss and adjust our strategy (which of course means menu-ing your gear for 15 mins). In some cases the subtleties of the mechanics were just too obscure and we had to consult FAQs.

The single biggest flaw as previously stated in the thread is the cumbersome menu-ing, which is an absolutely integral part of the gameplay. The other flaw is that the in-game manual sucks and actually gives you straight-up bad advice in some cases.

As far as the positives… where to even start? The whole setting is so mysterious yet cohesive. There appears to be a story, but you're just a goon in the story so you're not really privy to it. The visuals are incredible, easily my favorite looking PS game. The music is absolutely excellent and fits with the mood of the game perfectly. The Resident Evil style map design of interconnected areas, locked doors and backtracking works just as well as it does in those games. The combat is intricate and rewarding; getting used to the timing as well as learning the completely insane damage formulas takes time but pays off in the long run. I could go on and on…

All in all I think VS is a miracle from a brief golden age, the kind of experience we might never see again in games unless some indie company does a worthy VS homage.

Vagrant Story was originally a Parasite Eve project that got cannibalized into a Final Fantasy game, Parasite Eve is the only genuine one that is close because of this. The only other game I can think of that might come close is Hybrid Heaven but that's a very surface level comparison.

Despite what the nostalgiafags say, this anon is right. I found my old copy of the game a few months ago and found myself stopping after only a couple hours because it was so difficult to watch. It might just be one of those games that has to be played on a CRT, but I think it has more to do with PS1 games being 320x240 which looks like trash if you try to play outside of the original resolution and this game really looks like garbage upscaled. Beyond that the game has definite issues with contrast. Some spots are so washed together it's hard to tell what's going on and the game occasionally does some bizarre cross-eyed doubling-image effect in some cut scenes which is absolutely nauseating.

I absolutely loved the game back in the PS1 era and I may give it a try again later, but I'm not going to pretend like the game's visuals didn't age like milk. Maybe it looks better on an emulator but I highly doubt it. It's definitely a game I'd like to see a remaster of though.

Emulators certainly makes everything clearer and allowing texture filtering is standard. Anyway, the problem with the game's graphics is not a matter of low specs or old hardware. Just like blurred lowpoly on the N64, the PS1's style was always cheap but we used to overlook this because of the novelty with 3D. After the jump to the next generation, that tradeoff became impossible to ask from the player.

Not everything ages with elegance. This is neither right or wrong, it's a reality you have to deal with as you get older and even the nostalgia glasses stop giving you rest.

It's not the scanlines either, which didn't really exist on consumer tvs, it's the color bleed that these games were designed around. This is the kind of shit you get with the hybrid scanline feature on the OSSC on a 4k tv, and it looks pretty terrible. It just doesn't have the processing power to match what we can get from discrete GPUs and bloated multi-layer shaders. Also, I'm reasonably sure that in your final image, the one in the right is a PVM, not OSSC scanlines on an OLED tv.

not everybody has access to a nice CRT, personally I'd rather play on a mid-rang 2010 LCD TV then a chinese shit box from the 90's or even 2000's. have you actually used an OSSC? and yeah i'm not super sold on V+H scanlines either (I prefer the look of a 800 line PVM instead of the 400 line and lower displays that some are going for) so I have most of my setup in 4x (or 5x) mode with regular scanlines at 85%. I don't have any 4k monitors yet. (only 1080p for now)

I should have labeled them…

1.direct capture from Wii virtual console genesis game (streets of rage 2) 240p mode

2. same setup + ossc (3x mode+) on a 1080p lcd

3. 4k OLED TV (with a Mega SG) vs an 800 line PVM (with an old Mega Drive+rgb) on streets of rage 1 (I think)

it always looks way better in motion running before your eyes. screen shots and video do a horrible job of conveying what any of this really looks like during actual game play.

Surely your local thrift store has a bunch of SD TVs for ~$15 you could rescue. You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars for a PVM or BVM at a usable size unless you're specifically chasing that aesthetic. There weren't more than a handful of people playing vidya on those at the time, so that isn't exactly the authentic setup. Polite sage for pretty thoroughly derailing the thread. Have some fresh VS shots.

No, it just looks like an lcd with blank lines running through it. It always does, this is not what CRTs are like at all and you're just moving farther and farther from the authentic experience.

Are you telling me this isn't what the developers intended? :^)
