Here's how you fix this series. It's very fucking simple.
MAKE A RETURN TO STILWATER EXPANSION TO SRTT
There are numerous problems with The Third, not the least of which was the writing shifting to full burlesque humour, but the main, core problem was that Steelport was a shitshow of a town compared to Stilwater. What people loved about Saints row was the sheer depth of content and customization, not wacky shit.
If volition thinks their way out their slump is to make a new town and more memes, then may God have mercy upon them, because they're fucked right out of the gate.

Either retcon 3 and 4 or reboot it entirely. They have to cut back on some of the wacky shit and bring back the gang stuff from the first 2. There is probably a good middle ground between 2 and 3's tone, but I doubt the people making them are interested in doing that. Most likely 5 will be the time travel shit they hinted to at the end of 4.

Just like the first game but improved in every conceivable way. Great game but it's a shame the PC port sucks.
>SR3
A fun and well polished sequel generally, but it's brought down by tryhard writing and meme humor, and some really bad pacing. Late game missions are really boring and dull compared to the early missions which were fun and over the top ridiculous.
>SR4
A gimmicky expansion on SR3 that tries too hard to ape Prototype and Just Cause.
>Gat out of Hell
More of the same from SR4 but the dumb humor and writing are just too much to even tolerate.

One of the endings in Gat Out of Hell has the SR universe rebooted, this could be a great start narrative wise since there's nowhere else to go after IV and GOoH.
Volition should go back to basics, SR was in many ways a response to GTA but GTA and the open world game has changed in many ways, both good and bad and SR needs to find its identity. At this point they can't outdo Just Cause/Prototype in terms of destruction and mayhem and they don't have Rockstar money for production so…
They need to dial down the wackiness and be grounded, like 2, for at least the first half of the game, have the player earn the right to be wacky and outlandish as they progress through the story. Also, "BIG" open worlds have been done to death, they should do is opt for a denser world.
I could go on and on but the fact of the matter is that SR as a series is a product of its time and they need to adapt.

I think it can be batshit while still being grounded like SR3. My problem with SR4 is that it fucking gets rid of elements from previous SR like the gang fights. I would have loved if you actually played the game as the president and handled the whole stuff as if it was a gang, fighting other nations as if you fighted other gangs, all other nations being stereotypes like Arabs, Asians and Russians Guess you can't do that in CY + 4.
Instead it became a shitty Mass Effect clone with a shitty antagonist that was born pretty much from a DLC idea.

Could take cues from Mass Effect 2 and it's Omega space-station for an example.
As in Saints or what's left of them take to the space, find this lawless "space-station city" filled with outlaw ayylmaos, gangs and such shit and would proceed to make it their own. I digress but it'd probably be Fallout 3 where you're constantly shooting degenerate raiders for a literal Monarch, and then fighting the US government (which by that point had become completely alien and unrecognizable to most people). Hell the player gets a shitton of good karma for blowing up the raider brothel/slave market (Paradise Falls), killing it's nigger leader and for worshiping Abraham Lincoln. Same for the Andale, Stealing Independence, and Tenpenny quests. The Pitt is also full on blackpill, although Point Lookout is a stereotypical liberal view of coastal Maryland.
In terms of just average "racism" then GTA V because of all the Micheal-based family stuff and border defense minigame. Also killing Trevor, because he's a monster and everything that isn't politically correct.

SR3 eventually became lame because you could do extraordinary things, in a hyper exaggerated world, often. Some of the set pieces and missions were definitely fun, it just felt far too 'zany' to have any real lasting positive effect. SR2 was the perfect mix of grittiness, comedy and story. SR4 was fan-service, and even that kind of fucked up. Like 3, they both had their moments, but overall it lacked the same touch and feel. Also they took way too long to resurrect Johnny Gat. A lot of games were built on custom engines ( game development was hardcore back then. ) that can't be emulated properly without access to the original code
.
This results in either, an shitty port that's running but they don't know how or rebuilding the game from the ground up in a different engine like they did with Silent Hill 3 Remastered. Oh yeah. There's also issues with codec licensing. A lot of those expired so they can't use the sound compression and graphical compression they had back in the day. Granted it's on PC, and it doesn't need compression - it was designed to work with the compression in mind. So you can't just can't swap that MOV for a MP4 without breaking something.

Saints Row was genuinely ruined by SR3. I don't think people even fully realize how much damage SR3 did and how worse of a game it was. Since it was much more polished than SR3 so people just thought it looked and played nice. However objectively it was flawed in almost every way especially compared to its predecessor
SR2
>Player has a clear backstory in the world, he belonged to The Third Street Saints in the previous game. The map has changed since 1, when you go to Saints Row it's now not a ghetto but instead an upper class district with new fancy buildings everywhere. The church is now a museum with Julius narrating exhibits about how evil the player was. You start the game gazing up at the Ultor tower and the game ends with you gazing down at the city from Dane Vogel's office
>Some of the characters from SR1 make physical appearances. Troy appears in a few cutscenes and Dex tells the player where to find Julius in the unpatched version of the game you have to do a hidden sidequest to unlock the final mission where you confront Julius. They later released a patch where Dex just calls you after you kill Dane Vogel and tells you where to find him Julius appears and you have a very great final mission with him. This makes it so the game benefits from playing through the first game and it feels like an actual continuation of it
>The new mission giver characters to SR2 are all great. Shaundi is a laid back stoner chick but she also wants to embrace gang life and the Boss wants to shield her from it. Pierce is lower class trash but he wants to be upper class so he plays classical music. He has an inferiority complex which shines in some of the missions where he gets annoyed when other people take credit for his ideas.
>The villains in SR2 are all great. Shogo is a bratty punk and by accident he irks Johnny Gat who then makes it a vendetta to take him out. And it leads to an amazing cutscene where he gets buried alive. The final mission where his father beats you in a sword fight and you shoot him is so memorable. Maero is a great villain because of how personally you fuck with him. You essentially ruin his life and he takes revenge on you in return by killing Carlos. The General and especially Mister Sunshine are extremely memorable villains, Mister Sunshine's mission in particular is a highlight. Each of the different gangs feels distinctly different which is great in comparison to SR1. But at the same time you also feel their absence when you take one out and you conquer the city. Because your goal as stated from the start is to take over the city through conquest.
>The Boss is a true villain protagonist. He is objectively more evil than every other character in the game and it provides a foil with Dane Vogel who literally does nothing wrong. The Boss has an enormous amount of ambition and what he wants he gets. He tortures dudes like the tattoo artist for the Brotherhood AFTER he gets information from him. He burns Maero's face with radiation. He causes Maero to murder his own gf by accident. He goes nuclear on the Brotherhood after Carlos's death. His brawl with Maero is intensely personal. When he eventually murders Maero he shoots him midsentence out of nowhere. You feel his rage and hatred constantly.
>The world of Stilwater has interior locations and every mission location including Dane Vogel's office is explorable in the open world. There are also hidden locations
>Character customization allows you to layer clothing and the British voice is voiced by Mister Sheffield from the Nanny. Who does an extremely good job.
>The player is required to play minigames which are all intensely fun. Especially fight club and Fuzz. You also unlock really good shit in each one like a homing rocket launcher for Mayhem.
>Every pedestrian is part of a social class and is a player customized character. You can dress up as any one of them

SR3
>The player is essentially a brand new character in this world. Steelport has zero backstory outside of a club called the "Broken Shillelagh" and it being a place Shaundi went to for Spring Break. There is very little character to Steelport and you genuinely don't get a sense that anyone actually lives there. As in goes to work and does shit. There's little touches throughout Saints Row 2 that make the world feel alive like the Church museum. Or the cutscene where The Boss plays games with Shaundi at the arcade. Or Dane Vogel actually attempting to improve the lives of the citizens that live in the city. Everything in Steelport feels like an external influence like "The Syndicate" or "STAG" that's way bigger than an individual gang.
>the player has no overarching objective. There is no thematic resonance to anything. In Saints Row 2 the player constantly states he's taking the city for himself and nobody will stop him. In SR3 you are essentially just… existing and stopping "The Syndicate" and later "STAG". I was genuinely always confused why the player stays in Steelport and why he didn't just go back to Stilwater and assign one of his lieutenants to deal with the Syndicate.
>The gangs aren't individual gangs but part of an organization called "The Syndicate". I have no idea why they did this. It makes every part of it feel far less distinct. You don't see little things like the terrified Ronin gang members taking orders from Shogo. All of the gangs in Steelport feel like faceless drones
>When the player gets a wanted level you fight really overpowered comic book enemies like "Bricks" and an anime girl who teleports around. They all feel extremely unsatisfying to fight. This probably made more sense on paper
>Everything is a bullet sponge. Like a regular grunt enemy can take an entire clip of Assault rifle to kill at the start. It really makes the game feel tedious. The game is really well animated and punchy but it feels flashy.
>The world is entirely static. There's no interiors to explore outside of safehouses. Most of the safehouses are copypaste
>The storyline makes little sense. Initially they're avenging Johnnys death by trying to kill Loren. But after that they're just trying to take revenge on The Syndicate (specifically Killbane) because he trashed Johnny's funeral. It feels really weak as motivation. Most people if you ask them to summarize Saints Row 3's story they only mention Johnny's death and the bad ending.
>They get rid of the best villain, Loren, in the first hour. Killbane is a joke villain and Matt Miller is constantly made fun of.
>The developers put in a ton of awkward sex jokes like at one point you become a sex slave and run through a mansion naked.
>The boss keeps asking logical questions like "why are we doing this?" In Saints Row 2 the Boss was always the one making decisions. IE: He's the one who wants to steal Maero's shipment. He's the one who decides to go after Mister Sunshine. A really good example of this is during a mission where you go after Killbane at one point the Boss is forced to drive a car with a tiger in it. And he asks "Can't we just shoot the bastard?" and Angel just replies "NO YOU HAVE TO BREAK HIS SPIRIT"
>There's no real flow to the missions. The Boss just takes orders and does repetitive tasks in missions. In Saints Row 2 every mission represented the Boss trying to eliminate some way a particular gang made money. IE: He destroys the Sons of Samedi's farm where they grow drugs because he wants to steal their market.
>Angel is voiced by Hulk Hogan. Almost nobody notices this because he's horribly miscast. He's trying to play a more nuanced character in a game where at one point you are chased by sex perverts driving chariots. They should have cast him to play Killbane. I have no idea why they didn't do this.
>Character customization was gimped
>STAG is just Ultor turned up to 11 with laser weapons and VTOLs
>the only fun mission is the second one where you parachute into the Penthouse
>The game has only 20 or so unique missions the rest are activities. This was due to THQ's bankruptcy.
>The Boss isn't a malicious person in SR3. In SR2 he would torture someone just because he hated them. In SR3 he says he does bad things like he jokes about committing mass murder but in practice he does nice things like he lets Matt Miller live. The lead developer of Saints Row 3 was asked about this in an interview and he confirmed this was an intentional decision because he thought SR2 was too dark.
>Johnny Gat's death at the start of SR3 is now retroactively pointless because they resurrect him in 4

>Shaundi is a terribly written character. She has offscreen development that isn't explained. It's glossed over in 4 by her just saying she stopped wanting to get high. She's portrayed as a sex symbol in marketing but she comes off as a very nasty person in cutscenes. She's also voiced by a different person
>Pierce has no character flaws in 3, he's just a cool black dude. He barely has a presence in the story beyond just introducing pointless game mechanics.
>The only parts of the game that feel memorable occur at the start. Like the only part where the characters feel genuine and engaging is the part where the Boss and Pierce sing Sublime in the car. After this they feel like cardboard cut outs. It's why such a minor scene is one of the only memorable ones in the game.
>The developers spent WAY more work on the missions and not the activities. Most of the activities are worse. They cut fun activities like Fuzz and Fight Club.
>When you defeat a gang in the story they stay in the world. This is bullshit and genuinely feels like the developers did this by accident.
>This was the game where Volition made excuses as to why it wasn't as good as SR2. Like they made excuses that mission replay/cutscene replay was too hard to program in so they left it out. Despite a modder modding it in a week after launch. They would continue to make excuses constantly. Like with Agents of Mayhem they claimed the reason they didn't do a SR2 remaster is because they did a facebook poll with their fans and they voted on a "new game" rather than a remaster. Yeah that was a good idea
>The reason the game was worse than SR2 is because most of the team that worked on SR1 and 2 left after 2. This also occurred after 3 and 4, now most of the team that worked on 3 including the lead dev who made the game less dark on purpose left. He was one of the lead devs of Assassins Creed Origins.
Saints Row 2 feels like it was good by accident. I have zero hope for any future titles. They will eventually reboot the franchise due to the clusterfuck 3 left it in. At this point I would rather see Volition go bankrupt and see the franchise given to some other developer. Like the developer who got Red Factions rights. They fixed Red Faction Guerilla's PC port and made a remaster. That's all fans want but Volition is too retarded to do something basic like that.

That was for the console ports of SR2 (the Linux port probably does not have then either). The second/third waste truck to transport is a right pain the PS3 and co-op is online only, thanks faggots.

I think GTA, and it's clones are a done genre. Once you get over the novelty of free roaming modern urban environments in different kinds of vehicles, there's not much to it. I think you can use the premise as a base for a new game, but you actually have to put something in the game to make it worth the player's time. Make the driving as good as a top racing game, or the combat as good as a top action game, or the story as good as a top RPG, and then we'll talk. "dude, you can do anything" doesn't really fly anymore.

THQ Nordic are the ones who bought the Red Faction rights, and now they own Volition. They also said they would look in to porting SR1.

Then you're retarded. GTA 5 is one of the best selling games of all time, and Red Dead 2 was also a huge success. Open world games aren't going anywhere for a long time.

How can you say something like that in good faith unless if you want to look retarded? It's one of the rare DS games who made tried to make use of the system it was on in several ways. Drug trade was easily exploitable and yeah it's true that Ling died early but it's fucking fun. I bet you never tried to do shit like manipulating the IA gangsters to fight cops/other gangsters like in GTA IV

replay 2 you'll notice a difference in how Pierce is characterized. He tends to be the butt of several jokes. Like in one mission Pierce is sitting in the car with the Boss and he starts complaining about how he doesn't get enough credit on work. And the Boss tells him to shut up because they have to do something
In 3 meanwhile Piece doesn't complain and barely has a presence in the story. He's just… there. The only joke at his expense is that he never wins at chess. Kenzie is more involved than he is.

>this scene in your embed video
Holy shit, I don't know who's the voice actor and I forgot the number of the voice in game but he sounds really good. I played with a female char so I've never seen this scene from this perspective, the video in combination with your posts reminded me how hardcore the protagonist was and how SR2 was better than 3. I really ought to replay these games

The British voice was even better. He was voiced by the actor who played Mister Sheffield in the 90s sitcom the Nanny. He was asked why he wasn't in Saints Row 3 or 4 and he said in a YT video that he just wasn't called back. And he was under the impression a different company made those games. The British voice in SR3 was done by the same actor who played Brynjolf in Skyrim. I'm assuming it was a nepotism thing since he does VO in tons of vidya.
I didn't necessarily hate the new voices in SR3 though. Like I really enjoyed the Russian female voice in SR3 and I remember being really disappointed it wasn't in SR4. I think the Russian accent is the sexiest accent on a woman but that's just me

Saints Row 3 had a ton of really bizarre missions that I don't know what the developers were thinking conceptually. Like this one where you surgically alter yourself to look like one of the antagonists Cyrus. I remember thinking this was a really bizarre concept to grasp since I was playing as a female character. While you could in the world go to a surgery store and change you appearance to anything I saw this as more of a gameplay based thing and not something that would logically happen in a story context.

Exactly this. Go back to the roots. Everyone was fine with the wacky elements but it was the serious story, customization, crimes, & realistic but not dull feel that made the series fun. Saints Row the Third onwards don't even remotely resemble the first two games. Not in gameplay or tone.
Keep the wacky elements. Just tone it down to side content or simple missions sprinkled about. Basically just Yakuza it.

There's a lot of oddities like this that make your brain itch. They said originally Saints Row 3 wasn't a direct continuation of SR2. Instead you were playing an undercover police officer who was infiltrating the Third Street Saints like Troy in SR1.
I genuinely think the developers wanted to strip character gen from the game and only kept it because fans wanted it. And that the game assumes you're playing the default male preset. For example with this guy Josh Birk. He's supposed to be a starring role in a Saints Row movie in universe. Who is he supposed to be playing? The obvious answer is the player character but this makes zero sense if you're not playing the default male preset. Additionally something I distinctly remember is during Murderbrawl XXXI (the mission where you fight Killbane in a WWE style ring) the announcer always refers to the player in a male context. Like "Oh he dodged that". They later stripped chargen after SR4.
This is why I have extremely little faith in Volition as a company. They seemingly had no idea what people actually liked about Saints Row 2. Like they just thought "it's a big dumb action game, and GTA4 was really realistic. So let's make a big dumb silly game". When in reality Saints Row 2 had really solid writing and characters, and it felt like a cohesive work. Wheras SR3's design and characters all felt contradictory and like the developers wished they were making something else.
