Nice. I recently got a used copy of Blade Arcus Rebellion on the PS4 (hope it gets a PC version). It's a pretty interesting game so far and I'm glad they've made more characters viable than in the last game.
>Everything in this game hits hard and you can die in less than 15 seconds easily if you get overwhelmed. Combos are fairly short and footsies are pretty strong in this game.
>The game gives you plenty of defensive tools. Barrier prevents cross-ups and is done by hitting B and C at the same time. It pushes the opponent back while taking away from the AR meter (dedicated to parrying and your universal wallbounce attack). You can sacrifice 50% of a bar (out of 3) to have an invincible backdash that's very good for whiff punishing. It can also be used in blockstun to expose people.
>Burst is tied to assist meter. You have 4 slots that use an assist (the second character you pick that you can switch to between rounds) and a burst uses 3 so using your assist for a good deal of pressure or combo extending can mean you're not getting a burst when you need it.
>You can dash cancel many attacks to extend pressure, even during block stun you're applying on an enemy. You can use this for frame traps or extending combos.
Pic related are my mains. Except the nun. Not having her in this game is a crime. Pirate dude is a grappler who has a bunch of fake-out moves and dashing command grabs. One of which can lead into an anti-air command grab. The blonde is your setup character who puts orbs on the screen. Essentially, she's a more simple Guilty Gear Venom if Venom could blow up his Q-balls and had an invincible DP super that put more Q-balls on the screen. Meanwhile the mage has a neat gimmick where you level up attacks by constantly using them. Landing a command grab instantly levels you up, upgrading every special move.

I think Carmine and Byakuya are really stylish because of how they get to set up their setplay and enforce mixups, but they're pretty ass outside of doing that so I doubt you'd like them. If you want more straightforward style like jumping around the screen, wallbouncing enemies, mastering multiple systems simultaneously, etc. then I think Yuzuriha, Waldstein, Gordeau, or Chaos would fit the bill better.

It is pretty cool because it turns him into a grappler who can gain momentum. The weak version of the command grab chains into a forward dash where you can slash, command grab, anti-air command grab, or do a running command grab to catch a backdash escape. He hits like a truck too. 2 grabs and one combo will kill most players. He's one of the few characters with a LV3 super. Not sure if him and Misty should be my mains or Sonia with Rinna.
Speaking of which I'm surprised this game has no wiki page on Mizuumi Wiki like so many other anime fighters. I guess I'll have to request them to make one.

Not exactly. They get "retro" costumes what it looks low polygon inspired from the samsho64 games for the Hyper NeoGeo 64 arcade. Genjuro is, for now, a preorder exclusive from AmazonJP. But it is really weird as why Shiki wasn't announced with one since she actually IS from the 64 series and now is the first time she appears in a mainline series.
But I agree with Charlotte's design. I just wish they gave the option of her older one like they did to Kyo and Athena in KOFXIV. Well damn, I just got my first Genbu rank in the most anti-climactic way possible. I was fighting against some Anna player who wasn't doing that well, maybe he didn't know the matchup or was simply having a bad day but he kept rematching a couple of times nonetheless. I accepted each time because I always try to play as many games as possible but since I had a lot of XP already and you gain an absurd amount of points against someone on the same rank I quickly got to my promotion match.
At some point during that game he just kinda gave up and started ki charging and walking into my attacks on purpose, no idea why he decided to do that but of course that win felt completely undeserved. I sent him a friend request afterwards and asked him what was going on during that fight but I haven't gotten any reply yet.
I usually don't care about ranks that much because of how retarded the whole matchmaking and XP distribution system is but now I actually feel kinda bad for getting that promotion.

No, I don't think they are giving up exactly. Gundam Versus and Gundam Breaker were both games that weren't successful anywhere. Even the JP players didn't like the new mechanics added to GV like dive boosting and universal assists that have to be unlocked. It was also plagued by so much DLC it cost more than the whole game. Meanwhile Gundam Breaker was a huge mess.
As for pushing Gundam, I think they still are. They didn't take long to make an english translation for Gundam Battle Operation 2 and SRW games still get consistent translations. We'll see what happens with the next big Gundam game.

Both are fantastic choices. Kazuya is pretty cool as well, he has one of the best looking rage drives in the game and I love the animations on some of his normal moves, df1 for example. It also looks quite flashy when you use his fast unblockable as a wall combo starter.
My favorite character in that regard however is Lee, his entire moveset looks incredibly slick and elegant. It's not really worth playing him though unless you really fall in love with the character because it's very difficult to do his optimal combos consistently and some of his key moves have pathetic frames which forces you to rely on making a lot of reads.

It's trash. Pick up a used TE2 or any decent MadCatz stick with Sanwa parts from the 360/PS3 era instead. You'll need an adapter if you need support for the latest consoles but it isn't too bad. Replacement buttons/stick is cheap if you need replacements. The case will generally be of better build too and there will be more after market support for the PCB inside if you choose to mod in the future although if you do you'll probably just replace the PCB anyway honestly. There are good used Qanbas and other brands out there too for nearly the same price as that Mayflash. If you really look around you might be able to find something even cheaper. If you're willing to do the minimal work to fix a button or replace the joystick in something you might be able to get a great stick for free plus the cost of a small part ($25 or so).
As a rule of thumb stay away from anything without Sanwa, Seimitsu or Hori Hayabusa buttons/joysticks in them. Knowing that is enough to keep a newbie out of trouble when it comes to purchasing an arcade stick.

Sometimes legacy support is half assed. SFV's was awful when I used it. If you're a tourneyfag it's typically banned for a variety of reasons. Some of the "budget" sticks are decent and the parts can be replaced with good ones as they fail. Generally, the joystick is more of a problem than the buttons. A lot of these budget sticks use cloned Sanwa buttons and joysticks in them. They aren't as horrible as people say they are in a lot of cases but considering a joystick+button replacement is only about $30 it seems cheap to skimp out on that. If they went with cheap joystick/buttons it probably means they skimped out elsewhere.
You can build your own very cheap by the way if you're into do it yourself. If you're just going to gut something like a mayflash anyway it's worth considering. At that point you're just using it for the case and you can get a much nicer case for less money. You can also spend $200+ on a case a lone if you go to a custom builder. Same deal with parts. Basic joystick+basic colored buttons are cheap. Clear/chrome/gold buttons are more expensive and if you're going clear you'll probably get an LED kit + PCB to control it so that's another $25-$30 just to be annoying. They make all types of joysticks in various configurations for different purposes/games. You can swap springs and parts between joysticks to customize them to your own liking too. It can become a money pit.
What I would do in your case would be look at reviews for sticks and see if there is/was one made that seems like it ticks all the boxes you need. Then go on ebay or other places where normalfags sell their junk and find one in decent condition. Be on the look out for something with broken buttons/joystick and try to use that to grab it for $20-$50. As long as the PCB is in working condition a repair shouldn't run you more than $20-$30. That'll get your something for around the same price as the mayflash with good parts/case.

Finally got my copy of UNIST today, a few days later than I expected but at least I got it in time for the weekend. Cleared most of the tutorial and spent a little while in training mode looking at some characters. Carmine and Yuzuriha seem very interesting but also a little overwhelming so I think I'll start with Akatsuki and maybe switch characters once I'm familiar with the game.

I don't know why I keep trying to play SFV online. I guess it's due to the fact that I bought it for a local group that dropped it after a week and I'm trying to get my moneys worth out of it. Just got done playing 3 matches

I was talking with some SFVfags recently, and their general opinion was that although the game is the most playable it's ever been now, online is still a crapshoot. One of them only derived joy from smurfing each character to platinum, then deleting the accounts. The other, despite enjoying the state of the game, was frustrated because he played a slow, bad character and a fast, good character; the disparity between the two made him frustrated.
I listened to the two of them talk for most of an hour: they discussed primarily the social media pageantry various streamers would do when playing the game online, how they were often screwed by rollback netcode, and how they didn't enjoy picking top tiers because their wins felt like robbery.
It's the same wildcatting behaviour that every GaaS succumbs to nowadays. Nobody wants to play for the sake of playing; the only reason anyone interacts with the software is to post about the interaction on social media or a (((discord))) server for a brief dopamine high.

That's part of it but they changed a lot of other things. I played Sakura in SFIV because you could do so many different things to go into her BnBs. You could also play footsies by baiting them to do something and blowing it up with her DP.
SFV Sakrua feels like SFV Ibuki where they made major changes to the character to the point where it doesn't feel the same anymore. For example her Tatsu in SFV is do different that you can play mind games with it much anymore. The extra fireball is nice but you hardly ever have a situation where you can use it and often times it's easy to jump over it anyway. They made so many little changes and it doesn't feel like Sakura anymore.
Perhaps I just haven't player her enough. I would play her more often but

I think making a semen demon is more memorable and instantly likable. But I definitely wouldn't say it means the character is more interesting or better design wise. Like AH3LMSS Minori (4th image) is clearly attractive, but I don't care for their design.
Meanwhile you can have an ugly character like SamSho Basara and his deign tells you many things about him. Frail (muscular but terribly thin) and pale skin shows he stays in the dark, his stance makes him look mentally deranged, and an odd weapon meaning he most likely has an abnormal fighting style. You can add a cohesive sexy design to a game to make it more pleasant to its demographic. Dead or Alive is a fine example but understandable suffers from the stigma of being a "titty fighter" and thus, people think less of it as general. Not only FGC but casuals as well. Banking on DLC worked in DOA5 at least. But at the same time it's retarded to just gloss it over the game as having no substance or shallow because some of the costumes of the women in it, same can be said about those who would rather play Xtreme3 and it was of such suberb quality when the game has less features than the fucking first one on the Xbox and it reuses tons of animations from the second game without any changes. At least Lisa became an actual character in DOA4.

Here's some Granblue Fantasy Versus gameplay. One things that immediately caught my attention was the UI. Special moves in this game work on a cool down system. I don't have a problem with that. The problem is that the cool down icons are tiny and right below the health bar. So you'll need to be constantly looking up near your HP and away from the fight to see what moves are available. Why they would do this is beyond me.
As for mechanics, this game has a universal overhead and I believe inputs are very simple like SNK Heroines. Special attacks have cool downs unless you use your meter which will eliminate the cooldown and give an added effect. Damage doesn't look that high in this game but not that low either so I expect that matches won't go on for that long.

I think the UI's design is unsurprisingly meant to appeal to casuals, because when I first started playing fighting games it felt odd to me that I would need to look at a Tension gauge at the bottom and a Burst meter at the top simultaneously.

You can actually see the little note at the bottom correcting Jiyuna when he said that.

So, why do people play Mortal Kombat again? None of the characters have any sort of commonality or mechanic to fall on while you're learning, the inputs are all over the place so you have to lab literally every character, the said inputs also have no leeway whatsoever, the movement is stiff and slow and on top of that MK11 has actual input lag in single player, let alone online.
I could get used to blocking in MK, but literally every single fucking thing about the new one is repulsive. And for some reason, a few of my casual friends the type who play sports EA games, they're also black fucking LOVE the game, it's one dude's first fighting game.
I decided to get it to figure out what the fuck they were on about, but the only reason I can think that they're into it is because of the single player, because both don't bother with online.
It's essentially a single player game, only because the AI is horrible. If you actually have to play against another skilled player, it's the least fun game i've played in my life.

If there's one thing MK had going for it, it's the large amount of singleplayer content, like the arcade towers and minigames like kart or chess kombat, secret characters at least pre MK9 because it's all DLC now, but even MKX had like a secret Cyber Sub Zero triborg variation.
But even then, when you have a three hour story mode, at least two of which are just fucking cutscenes, that grates on you fast, and not mentioning the big time wasters in game like x-rays or what I think are called Fatal blows now.

Tsubaki and Izayoi are about as "clones" as Nu-13 and Noel are even though they're the same person. Also, Tsubaki would fit better the system than any other Blazblue character that you basically need to relearn them from the ground up. I'm going to reiterate that Mortal Kombat 11 is the worst fucking game i've ever played. The stun is so fucked up that high level players spam low jabs and grabs and there's nothing most characters can do about it. Sub-Zero a zoner character in this game because all of his normal attacks have, for no reason, extremely slow frames, so you'll end up spamming ice balls and his Slide because one stuns for a shitload of time but comes out slow and can be comboed into single hits, and his Slide is a low damage but fast alternative to playing the game. I played Sub-Zero in this case.
I also played Jax and the only thing I got was salt from players who had been Jax'd before with single jabs and his high damage command grab.
Literally nothing in the game feels good or flows at all. After every move, despite the fact that there's little recovery to take advantage of, you feel planted in one spot. Walking is slow and there's no method to get in within a zoner player's range outside of jumping or zoning back, the first option leading you into flowchart shit.
On top of that, the higher rank the player, the most niggest they are when it comes to sportsmanship. I've actually had to block people during the 4 weeks i've been testing this game out, for both winning and losing results.
No one is having fun with this game if they're playing with other people. It was not made to play with other people. It's a single player game, because that's the only reason people are playing it.
I'm legitamately mad that there's literally nothing but horribly unsportsmanlike people playing this stupid fucking game. I've literally never had a fun experience playing it, even when playing someone of equal skill, because the entire game is about using spam tactics, not honing reaction time and skill.

It's taken way too long but I finally got another butthurt PSN message. This time it came from a Paul player who ki charged 2 times during the match. In the end I managed to win the match and ki charged right back him afterwards which apparently made him mad enough to send me a message; I don't really understand what he's trying to say though.
To my surprise most players actually seem to have a pretty good attitude about the game. I've sent a few messages saying "ggs" and sometimes giving the opponent a bit of advice if I noticed a significant error in his playstyle and so far everyone has replied in a kind and appreciative way.

I just noticed your post but yes there have been some significant balance changes for a lot of characters, Lee and Kazuya for example have become quite a bit more powerful. S-tier characters have gotten a few nerfs but they're still viable, nobody plays Dragunov anymore though. There also have been some changes to the ranking system, most importantly you now see your progress to the next rank which makes people run away from difficult matchups much more frequently.
