I mean…Look at Smash Ultimate's ridiculous input lag (without even talking about internet lag and payed online).

I was thinking…Would playing on a PC emulator (with a strong modern rig) could provide a lower controller input lag than the native console ?

For example, is it possible to play Smash Bros Melee and Brawl on the Dolphin Emulator with a lower Input Lag than on the native Gamecube/Wii console ?

If yes, it would be amazing, because Smash Bros Ultimate really needs it with the super long input lag. If Yuzu could provide, in 2-3 years, Smash Bros Ultimate with 4k@60fps, lower input lag, Free NetPlay with better online performance, all the DLCs included for free,…Then, it would be the Ultimate experience.

There's some MAME hacks that reduce input lag of arcade games from 3 frames to like 1 or even 0, so yeah emulation can reduce input lag but your display and your brain area already lagging so hard it doesn't matter.

can you cite some evidence to support your claim that games are intentionally delaying input?

because yeah current flows at the speed of light (give or take). so unless the software is actually message queuing the input signals you actually could potentially design a better circuit: shorter paths, better signals, etc…

I think the game with the flat out worst menus ever has to be Dragon Quest 9. No idea if it's just the English version or what but there's times where the input delay is so bad you can wait like 5 whole fucking seconds waiting for the menu to go away. The worst part is that they aren't even elaborate. It's just a translucent box with some text.

Decent netcode paired with a decent internet connection is more than fast enough to where the latency is not noticeable for the person playing. Yes its there, but our perception is pretty forgiving when it comes to input latency generally speaking unless the action is particularly fast.

OP isn't talking about that though. Smash Bros. genuinely has trash netcode thats always laggy and unresponsive. Smash Ultimate even has latency problems OFFLINE with certain joycon configs

Since the video the screenshot is from mentions that most of the game's lag (in single-player, at least, but it affects online too) is mainly from the rendering pipeline, then being able to render faster could theoretically reduce input lag. It'd still be pretty shit online though.

Yes. RetroArch's runahead feature does exactly this, reducing any game's lag to 1 frame, by emulating multiple frames in the time a single frame is output for display. Naturally, this brute force approach is quite demanding on performance, since it multiplies emulation cost by the number of frames of latency to be eliminated.

Note that while there is a LibRetro Dolphin GCN/Wii emulator core, I don't think anyone's tried using runahead with it yet, as the only hardware accelerated core that has been modified to properly take advantage of it so far is the Beetle PSX fork of Mednafen.
