building rpg towns is great. and they'll even help defend. you can build dressing rooms so they equip themselves with armor and "rooms" have their own minimum requirements and can be laid out a number of ways. for example a workshop is just a couple chests and barrels in a room with a minimum size (closed with a door) but add in a forge and its a smithy
the game is also much more linear and has levels that end with bosses and actual missions like finding survivors to bring back to the town.
each "level" ends with a boss battle where you defend the town.
you arrive and you find an empty town like pic 1, then turn it into a thriving town like pic 2. you can always stay on the level and just build it more and make it cozy. each level unlocks new items for the unlimited mode.
you can also build traps/defenses like cannons

Do you actually want survival games or just block autism games? If the latter, Terraria has been Minecraft but actually good and actually a game ever since it came out and it still is. Trove is also out there if you want a Minecraft MMO and don't mind the same garbage resolution for blocks Minecraft has for building things with and a shitload of grind.
As a survival game Minecraft is pretty pathetic. Only survival games I actually enjoyed playing for a while have been Stranded 2 and the gmod gamemode heavily inspired by it that I doubt is even being played anymore. Most are just heavily stripped down RPGs which exchange content and depth in the mechanics for making you fill some bars every now and then.

Now whether or not it's good… The game has always had some systemic problems with pacing and combat that were never really addressed properly. The biggest fundamental problem with the game is that like Minecraft it's designed around infinite retries. Terraria has a ridiculously larger focus on Combat than Minecraft. It has a fuckton of equipment, mobs, bosses, drops, invasions, and even raid-like events. It even has equipment classes, set bonuses, accessories, and builds. It's imo a much more enjoyable game to play from start to finish than Minecraft.
But then Minecraft wins in exploration and sandboxiness. Sure you can build and do art in both games, but Minecraft can do that a whole LOT better with mods like Chisels & Bits, letting you build virtually fucking anything in 3D.

Dragon quest builders is a JRPG with minecraft trappings. Nothing about the appeal of minecraft is actually in DQB. There is no real freedom, you're just on a set track with an alloted plot of land. It doesn't matter if the crafting is technically better, that's 99% of the appeal gone right then and there.

What? You can still build whatever and whenever you want. The game just gives you building objectives, and if you follow them then you get more NPCs. The concept of a game where you build a village to get more people is far more appealing (as Terraria has shown). But as far as building mechanics go it is just Minecraft with additional features, nothing was taken away.
