The Sonic Mania short films prove it's possible to make good Sonic cartoons. If you had gotten those people to make a feature-length animation, or just done a made-for-TV Sonic Boom movie, it would be fine. Tonnes of cartoons used to do stuff like this; something like MLAATR's Escape from Cluster Prime is a great example of both being faithful to the source material and working within the limits of 22-minute episodes.

I had no expectations for this movie and it still surprises me with how bad they made it. Who thought Gangsta's Paradise was a good soundtrack song for the Sonic movie? Isn't this the same plot as Paul, that Simon Pegg alien movie? Looks like it was also inspired by the Michael Bay TMNT live action movies. Jim Carrey doing his usual Jim Carrey acting. Eggman is the good guy but he's actually the bad guy because he doesn't know that Sonic is trying to save the world? He might know in the full movie but he seems like a hired random scientist in the trailer. All that fur animation and horrid face on Sonic. The detective Pikachu movie has more restraint on textures and might be a better film that is closer to its source material than what this thing is. It's got till November to fix itself but it'll never fix the core structure of it's story in time, unless they scrap and redo the entire film now.
This seems like an extremely late released 90s film like that Dora the Explorer movie coming out later this year. It would have been a bad idea then and a worst idea released now. I don't know why there is such an adversion to just making an animated movie for something that would work better as a cartoon. The Sonic shorts prove that.

Sure, I'll take the plunge for you. The first two images are requests made when I do a hard refresh of this tab. HookTube is YouTube with a partial condom, but it can't do everything. Embeds still link directly to youtube's image servers to serve the images to you, which tells Google what video you are looking at, and where you are looking from (thanks to the referer header), and enough browser information to fingerprint you (including your IP address).
When you click the embed, it actually loads and embeds the video, making connections to google's video servers (googlevideo.com) giving them the same information, but also giving them information about how you're loading the video, how you seek in it, how long you watch it, etc, due to the way it loads.
HookTube and Invidious are good. They are better than raw YouTube because they load the video directly and prevent Google's tracking scripts from running, but they don't fully protect you, because they still connect you directly to google's servers for image and video running.
This is not because HookTube or Invidious are bad. It's because they are doing the absolute best they can do. They can't store the videos locally, because they don't have the infrastructure to. They can't proxy the video stream through their servers the way startpage can, because they don't have anywhere near the bandwidth to be able to do it (they do as much as possible in the browser). They prevent tracking and advertising scripts from running in the browser and allow you to avoid having your searching and browsing data collected by Google, but not your watching data.
Most importantly, they don't prevent image loading from telling Google where you are searching. If you use a static IP, the Referer header gives Google snapshots of every single page you load while you use the internet as long as you use enough pages that have YouTube, HookTube, or Invidious embeds, including here. If you have one of these embeds in every thread, they can get a complete picture of the browsing habits of every user on this site that uses a single IP (which is the majority of us. At least everybody who isn't on TOR).
Google can and does use this information. I know this because I'm a programmer who had to build some tracking software for a company who I'm not allowed to talk about (not Google), and most of our technology stack was built by ex-Google employees who described that it was built to the same standards.

Using Coolio music is hilarious and appropriate since Sonic is a creation of the 90s, and Jim Carrey seems to capture the "kooky and obsessive" parts of Eggman's character really well. Sonic's design and use of the setting is what bugs me the most. Everyone's screeching that it looks worse than 06 or some shit, but until a human makes out with Sonic's corpse I'll hold off on that comparison. Sonic and Eggman's personalities seem accurate at least. Sonic's personality actually feels like himself rather than the unfunny 40 year-old "I'm still cool right?" personality he's had since Colors. I'm not expecting quality, but I don't think its going to be Super Mario Bros: The Movie tier. The Coolio usage felt out of place since Sonic's always been associated with rock music, specifically punk and hard rock, something a rebellious teenager would listen to. Aside from my complaints with the designs, I don't think its as bad as people make it out to be. It reminds me of autists chimping out over green eyes or blue arms and using that as proof that some Sonic content was irredeemable instead of analyzing the core content. Its a game adaptation, and their interpretation of Sonic's look worries me, but I haven't seen anything yet that makes this look unwatchable.

Jim Carrey was not the right actor for Eggman. The role of Eggman requires somebody who is ridiculous and overt, somebody who can be animated and witty. The problem is that while Jim Carrey is animated and does crazy very well, he's well-known for being all over the place. Eggman in every portrayal where he's more than just laughing pixels is very overt in his insanity while being extremely pointed and driven; nothing is wasted, and Carrey's rendition just seems like a ton of wasted energy.
