I just started playing this again. I didn't get far the first time because my PC kept crashing so I said fuck it and put it in the backlog until I upgraded.
Thinking of going Spears (for reach) and tonfa (for CQC and breaking stamina).
Can I change my character to play as a cute girl later?
Is the game really just a loot grind, or is there an actual story to give a fuck about underneath it all?
Any advice? General Nioh thread too I guess.

You can change your skin to most of the characters in the game after the Tsuchigumo boss I believe, so yes.
>Is the game really just a loot grind, or is there an actual story to give a fuck about underneath it all?
The story is perfectly serviceable and is all that much more enjoyable if you know about the sengoku era as it's full of references.
>Any advice?
Onmyo magic is easy mode if you ignore the elemental orbs and go with buffs/debuffs, minmaxing is possible but leveling everything is also perfectly viable and probably the easiest way to go about things. Use the revenants to get some good armor easily.

I started playing Nioh like two weeks ago. The story is basically get your guardian spirit back from the skinhead looking guy while getting tangled up in those Sengoku area wars with all the famous people. I'm amazed how much content there is. I skipped NG+, did the DLCs instead which are apparently way harder and went straight to NG++ and every mission has crazy red enemies with buffs and you get encounters of multiple enemies thrown at you constantly. And I never even touched the Abyss (999 floors of different boss/enemy gauntlets with increasing difficulty) or the twilight missions.
Once you unlock the Hidden Teahouse you can spend Glory (earned by killing revenants if you pirated it) to unlock the characters you met in the story so you can play as them. I checked it briefly and most were like 10k glory and the only cute girl that was available at that time was 70k so its a grind to unlock them I think.
You can respecc for 10k gold, which is basically nothing. So feel free to try all the different weapons and see what works the best for you.

Weight management works pretty much like Dark Souls, but in this game it's called agility which is graded from A to D. I-frames don't change that much but at C agility you use a lot of extra stamina to dodge, run or attack, so try to stay at A or B if possible.

Decide on the general character you want. All stats seem just as viable as each other. I'm rock a sword/spear build at the moment and its really fun.
As for weapons, tonfa are regarded as the worst though I haven't used them. Fighting tonfa revenants (sort of PVP mechanic, you fight AI versions of players that died) puts me on the defensive. You're good with everything else, I think spears and swords are seen as the easy mode. My first run was primarily axe, odachi and sword, but most of the game was just axe for me.
Armour generally you want to be at B agility. C kills your Ki regen and screws your dodges, many would argue not to bother with A agility as well as you are too weak. I also rocked with C agility for most of my first playthrough. I somehow beat it but already on my second run I am having a much easier time. Kind of want to stop and start again for a full ninja focused William, but that can wait.
The only issue I have is that the first time through, I didn't touch onmyo and ninjitsu. Now I'm investing in them so I feel my stats may be spread too thin.

>Thinking of going Spears (for reach) and tonfa (for CQC and breaking stamina).
I went Raikiri/Magic with Warrior of the West the first time. I recommend this since you will save a shit ton of time finding/making good equipment since everyone uses Warrior of the West (as you can obtain it and the book to make it early game) and you can just kill revanents to upgrade your gear instead of actually bothering to smith it. There's a few other options with good early game sets this works for, but I don't remember them off the top of my head. You can easily respec everything but your starting choices.
>Can I change my character to play as a cute girl later?
Yes, but it's visual only. The quickest way to earn the needed points is to pick a less populated clan (you'll understand when you get there) with an easily accomplished donation and kill a bunch of revenants that drop the donation and donate. Once you've contibuted a good portion of a clan's civil war standing you'll get a shit ton of points at the end of the week, especially if their side won.
>Is the game really just a loot grind, or is there an actual story to give a fuck about underneath it all?
Story is fun. Loot grind is avoidable if you pick a build that uses common equipment so you can just cheese revenants for it.

You can get a cute gril skin later, yes. All weapons are viable if you build for it but hammer/axe spin2win is objectively the most overpowered build. If you're just playing to enjoy the game, do the game and NG+ and then put it down. There'll be minimal loot-grinding in that case and you'll still get like 200 hours out of it. If you want to actually get hardcore and do NG+++ or something, yes, you'll need to grind pretty hard in specific levels and areas for specific build-required items.
I don't remember jack shit about actually playing the game though, so no tips here. Maybe 'Never upgrade your armor level because it costs exponentially greater each time you do it'.

Worth it. Modern pricing and deals make it so, in my mind, games should always give at least 1-1.5 hours of entertainment per 1$ spent. That seems a fair ratio to me. Nioh will get you easily 50-80 hours even if you do one and a bit playthroughs to NG+. I personally dumped closer to 200 into it just messing with multiplayer and grinding for loot, so 20$ is a steal.

Raikiri is a sword that scales with your spirit and does electric damage. Spirit is the stats that enhances magic. A bit like magic/enchanted weapons in Dark Souls.
Warrior of the West is a set that boosts electric elemental damage damage and is meant to be paired with Raikiri. Electricity resists are relatively rare, and your magic can destroy most of those.

I see no one has mentioned ninjutso. You can actually make a full ranged build that practically never has to engage in melee. The only downside is that your thumb will be sore from abusing the d-pad.
There's a magic buff that gives you a chance to not spend consumable spells/ninjutso.
The ninjutso chance gives a chance to not consume shurikens/bombs/etc.
There's a spirit that restores ninjutso items.
There are 2x throwing damage stats.
It's actually really good, but I hear that in the true endgame spirit weapon builds are best.
I was mixing the Tatenashi and Iga Jonin set and focusing on the Kusarigama (loved the sweep and enemy pull moves) as backup weapon. I think I used the bunny and cat spirits, haven't played in quite a while.

Twirl only affects a solo foe, and spearfall can only down anyone close and in front of you. Groundquake pushes away and moonlit moonlit snow has very powerful swings. Retrograde flow isn't worth mentioning at all. Not that spear doesn't have bad skills either. Both weapons are great and provide distinct advantages for how I play the game. Twirl is ass. Its easily the worst counter in the game. You would have better results unequipping the weapon and using the unarmed counter.
Spears are also very bad for solo targets, enemies can close in very easily, all your moves require set ups, they have bad ki damage and break potential, the list goes on. Theres a reason why most of its moves are sweeping in nature.
Compare that to the odachi, it doesn't have as many group managing ability as the Spear but it has amazing ki damaging moves that can be spammed very easily. You have Tiger's Blade which is just a better Leaping monkey, waking winds and sunset breeze allow you chain attacks as long as your Ki remains and all the basic moves are amazing on their own.
TL;DR: You've been using Spear wrong if you've been using it as a single target weapon.

Axe has better stats for breaking but it doesn't have many abilities to use those stats so you'll be sticking to strong attacks most of the time. The only move that it has to keep the pressure on is Tri Spark which is pretty good but its the only thing it has.
Tonfa is absurdly good at depleting Ki. You can practically stun lock human enemies if you get them in a rhythm especially later in the game when you can reforge a Prevent Parry on your weapon and spam Shove until the enemy dies.
Odachi has Charging Bull and that tackle move. Charging bull is a bit bad as it automatically follows up with its own move instead of allowing you to set up a Grapple or Finishing Blow but the tackle can deplete Ki on Yokais very quickly allowing you to set up a living weapon stun lock.

>The deflection and posture system is fun
Regardless of your opinion on it, it would not fit in Nioh's combat and enemy roster. Katana is already focused on parrying and countering. Maybe you could add posture as a new weapon, but that's about it. The game has to work with all other weapons and styles so the game couldn't be 90% dudes with swords, and not be glory kill centric. In short, the posture system can only really work in a game that is entirely designed around it, and thus would not be a good addition to any game that isn't.
>Sekiro also has better movement
Sure, but as you said, it wouldn't bring much to Nioh per se, you'd just have to design the game differently. Same problem as for posture. You can like Sekiro all you want, but at the end of the day, it only works as itself and has nothing to contribute to other games, especially not games that are built around variety of playstyles like Nioh is.

Maybe, but sure as shit not in comparison to Sekiro, which recycles its central castle three times, almost every miniboss at least two times in different locations, the headless five fucking times and a good chunk of boss areas are reused twice. And that's before NG+ so don't bring Nioh's recycling after new game.

I would have enjoyed a choice too, but it really can't be helped. The historical William was in Ieyasu's corner and I don't see how the game would allow for any branching paths. I'm already content with the fact Ieyasu isn't portrayed as being spotless, having killed his fucking wife for political reasons, and every western army boss is sympathetic. Lord knows Sengoku Basara doesn't bother with any of that.

Yeah I can imagine the… nothing that would provide. The whole reason the grappling hook even exists is for the horrible stealth mechanics, take those out and the grappling hook has no use other than just avoiding encounters, because there's so few enemies you can actually use the aggressive moveset on.
God sekiro just makes me mad with how much of an absolute waste of potential it is. After a certain point in the story you unlock a tacked-on online component which is choosing a faction and getting glory points if you win. With those points (which I'm pretty sure you can also get normally playing the game but I don't remember the details as to how) you can purchase skins to play as. Those skins are essentially every NPC in the game excluding monsters, including the cute grills. Unfortunately Team Ninja knew this would be the first idea everyone will ever have so they made the cute girls significantly more expensive to unlock than anyone else.

So one of my dream games is a European Nioh. Same premise of being historical but with fantasy elements included. Combat would be different because Japan can get away with that fast and crazy stuff, I feel a European setting wouldn't fit with it as much.
What would the ideal setting be? I thought Danish/Viking invasion of England. That way you get a big clash of cultures and mythology, allowing you to draw from Nordic and English monsters and characters. Throw in some Celtic characters for even more. The problem would be that the weaponry and martial arts weren't as varied and sophisticated at this point. Nioh's setting is arguably perfect as its the height of melee combat before firearms replaced them.

I was just thinking about this earlier today. I'd personally like to see a game set in late 16th century Ireland where you play as a gallowglass and fight creatures from Irish mythology. Irish myth is represented to some degree in tons of games, the vast majority of them Japanese, but of them the only one I can think of which is actually set here in Ireland is Folklore.
Because of the time period in which gallowglasses were active (13th to late 16th century) you'd have a good excuse to include quite a bit of weapon variety. They mostly used the sparth axe, but were also known to use both one-handed and two-handed swords (including claymores). According to a near-contemporary source, someone is alleged to have been beaten to death with a handgun in the Battle of Knockdoe, in which hundreds of gallowglasses died, so there's that too. If you wanted to get a bit more adventurous you could also include stuff like the shillelagh and the skean/sgian dubh.
Gallowglasses have always had a personal appeal to me because I live in an area of Northern Ireland where four gallowglass clans had settled by the 16th century and my family's of Scottish descent on my mum's side. Apart from that I find their appearance really aesthetically pleasing, the Lough Henney helm probably being my favourite looking helmet in history. I also find their blend of older medieval Irish & Scottish weaponry with relatively more modern 16th century armour (see the helmet in the second pic) interesting.

Unfortunately allot of older games tend to tie the physics to the FPS, so running the game at higher then 30 breaks a bunch of things.
For example GTA3 has it so when at higher the 30fps momentum will build up from almost nothing and walking down a hill and having your feet slightly leave the ground will fling you at 100mph to your death.
Most porters are too lazy to try working around things so they just leave it at 30. The recent Killer 7 PC port is the only game i'v seen where the porters actually dealt with the frame rate physics well. like the majority of the game runs at 60, but the reloading animation and some abilities are still 30 so they function properly.

SW was pretty much like that too in the first 2 games since they made Nobunaga a counterpart to DW's Cao Cao, up until DW 8 the story of the games could be summed up as "Wei man bad, Shu man good". And just as the Wei kingdom's story became more nuanced as the games went on, culminating with 8 where they're not the cartoonishly evil faction anymore, so did Nobunaga's portrayal get more nuanced as more SW games were made.

Nobunaga wasn't really evil, not more so than any other merciless warlord. Some anime/games portray him as a good guy, some as a bad guy, some as a literal demon.
He seriously fucked over people who wouldn't submit to him though, and if people fled from him in battle he wouldn't spare them, he'd just have them run down.
He pretty much changed Japan and how they fought (introducing gunpowder and firearms and more roman-style unit infantry) and is regarded as one of the greatest tacticians to ever live. His governing also changed things up big time, though I know less about that.

A lot of bad rep Nobunaga gets is because he fundamentally spit in the face of the Japanese custom of the time, he also buttered up to European foreigners, purely to use their connections as a major advantage, which ended up being the majority of the reason as to why he is often vilified in various media which romanticizes the era, it also completely changed the face of warfare in Japan. The reason why this one is the biggest reason for his negative portrayal can be found in the context of what happened right after the Sengoku period, which is the Edo period marked by a strict isolationism which lasted for more than 2 centuries. It makes sense why Nobunaga, who was very open and accepting of foreigners, would then be seen as such a negative figure.
He would also for example give good positions or take them away based on merit rather than the standing of the holder's family which was seen as unacceptable at the time. He did things like this even when he was a very young lord following his father Nobuhide's death, which is why before he utterly crushed the Imagawa at Okehazama he was widely considered a brash fool who seemingly did things at random and people thought that he would get his comeuppance sooner rather than later, though from our contemporary perspective he would be seen as just a very pragmatic leader who knew how to think outside the box in order to defeat the old-fashioned warlords of the time. There is also his brutal treatment of enemies like >>16445560 mentioned. He wasn't content with just defeating his enemies, if for example he saw that an enemy would go along with his rule easily after they'd be defeated, he would treat them well, if they didn't he wanted to make a point to scare the absolute shit out of them so that they dare not defy him ever again, and if they seemed like they would still defy him, then he'd just have them all killed. The most known example of that is his massacre of the Ikko-Ikki at Mt. Hiei. He had everyone who was there killed, including women and children.

The two answers before me are accurate, but yeah basically whether you consider him evil or not is pretty much entirely up to how important the context is to you. He was a warlord with enormous ambition, he did not hesitate to dispose of any obstacles. But in the Sengoku Era, everyone was at each other's throats. Even monk groups were legit military mighty factions back then. Nobunaga was the first to say "fuck this shit, I want to unify Japan" even though he was basically a nobody. He killed his lord in a surprise attack during a rainstorm to gain freedom, and that made him a target for pretty much everybody around him. He had to go through some pretty insane political and military maneuvering just to survive, and had some pretty fucking close calls. Some blame him for massacring anyone in his way for that, some don't because he had no realistic alternative. Fact remains that Akechi Mitsuhide, one of his most trusted retainers since the starts, chose to betray and kill him, and while there is no concrete evidence of his motive, the generally accepted one is that he was fed up with his lord's ruthlessness, so there is that.
Personally though, I consider Ieyasu to be far more morally reprehensible. He was just a sneaky, opportunistic fucker. He got beaten at every turn whenever he made a bid for power, bowed down to his victor, and when it was just down to him and Mitsuhide, who had the superior numbers at Sekigahara, he just literally bought his army for under him because he knew he was too much of a military retard to beat Mitsuhide fairly. On the high-end, you're either chaining living weapon as you tear through trash, fully buffing and insta-gibbing bosses or just skipping trash entirely, buffing and insta-gibbing said boss. Swords, Dual Swords, Spears, Odachi, and Kusa have no problem doing this. Low to mid-end where you're going to spend the bulk of your playtime, Chidori easily matches spamming current patch quickdraw from behind in boss DPS while being way less clunky.

Sword of Execution doesn't make swords great. It used to, but we're long past that. Currently it makes them merely competitive, and that's fine, but again, why would you pair Swords with Spears? If you're that into Swords, go Sword+Dual Swords for two kits that actually complement each other.

03f197 No.16449030
>>16449017
Mid is better for blocking and certain weapons, High is generally better for more dps (generally), and low is better for dodging and stunlocking.
The most important part of each stance is that it greatly alters your moveset, and certain attacks hit different places. Swapping stances mid combo opens a ton of possibilities for bigger damage and longer combos.
963c8d No.16449041
>>16449017
I'm halfway through my first play-through, and I stuck with mid-stance most of the time. Now I'm finally getting a feel for it (previously I just played it like a Souls game) I'm seeing how the different stances have different moves that allow for changes in playstyle.
e.g. I just did the mission where you fight the spiders. Mid-stance hit too high for those with horizontal swipes, but both low and high stances had vertical cuts that got the little bastards easily.
Low stance allows you to hit quickly and often and dodge more too, so if you want to build-up the status/debuff meter on the enemy, it's a good option. Then when they're stunned you switch to high stance and whack them good since yokai get stunned with (nearly?) every hit when low on ki they won't interupt you, even with the slower combos.
And each stance is good for different things.
Low is designed for dodging quickly, mid is good for guarding, and high is good for damage.
I don't really see a use for stance changes with the katana, but from what I saw in the Odachi skill tree it seems designed specifically for switching stances mid-combo and chaining long strings.
6cf26b No.16449101
>>16449017
You'll learn through experience, unfortunately I never used dual sword or the odachi so I can't help you at all when it comes to specific tips, but you'll get the hang of stances with the odachi since iirc a big part of its playstyle is switching through different stances thanks to its unique techniques. Some types of weapons have a special kind of attack that you want to remember, for example I always used the kusarigama high stance weak attack string against Yokai because it just WRECKED their horns like they were nothing, which instantly drains all their Ki. If you have certain problems with one particular enemy type, experiment with your other stance or switch to your other weapon and see if you'll have an easier time against them due to one of your attack strings being a good counter against them. In short, your choice of stance should reflect the type and number of enemies you face.
As a general rule though - high stance enhances attacking, you'll get most of your powerful hits through this, doing both lots of life and Ki damage, your evading and blocking both suffer though and most weapons have very linear and slow attacks from this stance, so it's good for single target attacks. Mid stance enhances blocking and is the most balanced when it comes to damage and speed and also linearity or wide sweeping attacks. Most parry/counter moves are also found in mid stance. Low stance enhances evades, attacks are usually the fastest and wide sweeping, but weak. Evade types also differs, low stance gives you a virtually infinite (well, until your Ki runs out) amount of low Ki cost sidesteps, mid gets you a side step into a dodge roll which has a recovery before you can do it again, while high stance only has the dodge roll like in From games.
So to give you an example, once you start facing annoying umbrella faggots, you'll see that they are tricky little buggers who jump around a lot - low stance is key there due to its fast AND wide sweeping attacks. On the other hand I always preferred using high stance on almost all human enemies because it's easier to break their Ki and get a free high-damage killing blow on them or later I just did an Izuna Drop after I unlocked it because it's cooler.
One beginning tip I can give you is to always switch to low stance as soon as you gauge that you've gotten as many hits in as you want and then use it to pull back, then switch your stance back to mid/high (you can do so while still evading). It may sound really complicated at first, but you'll thank me, especially the "switch to low stance when pulling back" part, as you'll also quickly learn how to Ki Pulse properly, which is an absolutely ESSENTIAL skill to master in order to make your life easier and your path through the game much less painful. Also, sometimes you may prefer to do a roll or a dodge and then roll rather than just standard evades from low stance, so you may switch to high or mid stance after you perform your offense or just stay right where you are and perform a Ki Pulse. However, while rolls have better i-frames the recovery is kinda shit, so keep that in mind.

I don't know about that, you do fight historical figures as bosses but the meat of the game is fighting yokai. It's just a yokai war that doesn't lose sight of the sengoku setting, really, and I think it was the right path to take. You don't deserve to miss on Nioh for such a reason.

To me, it seemed like Sekigahara and Osaka campaign with some big ass monster in the middle. I guess it also doesn't help that KT can only seem to do one art direction and all their characters could be easily swapped from game to game, which admittedly is a boon for things like Orochi Musou.
>You don't deserve to miss on Nioh for such a reason.
I played the demo and kind of enjoyed it, admittedly got salty with 90% camo index tall grass Muneshige and his historically accurate Pikachu mostly for a string he had with damn near zero start-up; then I watched some videos of people railing his ass in seconds usually by giving him three debuffs before the fight even started and felt like a stupid asshole. At the time low stance was also very abusable or, rather, high stance wasn't worth shit.
That said, Nioh was part of a avalanche of good quality weeb shit so I wouldn't have the time for it anyway. "Funny" how at the time I thought we'd got all this SJW/censorship bullshit behind us but it just got way worse; got Sekiro this year and nothing palpable on the horizon. I think the full Nioh package is about 20-25 merkel shekels on sales.

>Mitsuhide's mother was held hostage and Nobunaga allowed her to be killed.
Yes, but from most sources I've read it seemed like this one tidbit was mostly Mitsuhide's own fuck-up as he was the one who offered her as a hostage.
>And besides that, he was reportedly pretty abusive towards him, always mocking him for being bald.
But he was abusive to pretty much everyone, as you said, which makes me doubt that he'd be the only one who'd let it get to his head especially considering that he was never demoted after the minor fuck-ups that Nobunaga abused him for. Nobunaga didn't give a shit about muh traditions and muh family standings and this was known back when he was a whippersnapper who ruled a fractured literally who clan after his dad's death and since Mitsuhide was with him for a long time (iirc he was a childhood friend of Nobunaga's wife who recommended him) I'd expect him to quickly learn how brash and petty Nobunaga would get, but would never actually demote you and tell you to fuck off unless you ACTUALLY fucked up badly. But yeah, there's still a theory which takes his shitty treatment of even retainers that were the most trusted to him into account that says that he joined up with other lords to secretly depose him with orders from the Emperor, as the Emperor feared that given how pragmatic Nobunaga was that he'd just do away with him once he took over Japan. There's a bunch of Nobunaga's retainers who were supposedly in on it, one historian I've read even mentions Hideyoshi but at that point I felt like he was writing fanfiction, but if Ieajew was in on it then it wouldn't surprise me if the fat faggot used Akechi to do the deed so that no heat can come to the tanuki jew.
>At least Hideyoshi had the yabou to conquer the world; got his ass kicked right at the start though.
He was unlucky that at that time the gooks had admiral Yi in their ranks, it's no wonder why he is considered one of the, if not the best naval commanders in history. He would also frequently get jailed for not following some orders by the head gook to the letter, but every single time he would have to be let free virtually instantly because as soon as he wasn't at the helm of the Korean navy, Hideyoshi would smack the gook navy around like they were Tijuana crack whores, which was the inverse of what would happen if Yi was leading the navy, he would stomp through the Japanese navy even if he was horribly outnumbered and would do so without having any of the ships at his command sinked.

Mitsuhide was a retainer of Saitou Dousan, Kichou's old man so that's quite likely.
I'm inclined to agree with that idea of the Imperial Court "ordering a hit" on him because he really didn't give two shits about the status quo. As for Hideyoshi, I guess it's fanfic'ing on my part but I believe he's loyal to Nobunaga, the man went places from a peasant-born sandal carrier. The status quo wasn't doing him any favors, even when he become the big dog, he still had bigger dogs than him and could only take the Regent title and settle for Cha-cha's pussy because Oichi cockblocked him with a knife to her gut.

Once it goes fully into the territory of the war, then yeah, it is more or less William running around behind enemy lines to defeat the general who is using youkai.

What actually changes when yokai are out of ki is that they can be staggered, like you observed. There's no final blow opportunity like in humans, but it is a good time to bust out your living weapon. Remember to always ki pulse, and purchase the "living water" samurai skills as early as you can. Its description reads "enables ki pulse even when dodging" but it's misleading, what it actually means is that you automatically ki pulse when you dodge. NG Hino is less about ki management (can backpedal her ground moveset, block the shuriken toss, and only need to dodge the dive, don't get greedy when she's out of ki), and more about whether or not you built around a weapon with a dogshit early game where your burst is gated behind dojos you can't do yet.

No one uses "all the ninja items", much like the Onmyo tree, most of the skills are genuinely terrible.

Every build fits in QCS. A Jutsu build is going to dunk on 'hard' targets with Shuriken/Kunai/Storm Kunai and clean up everything else with a Kusa, and eventually is able to use kunai on everything.
>anons who want to be pure samurai

From NG+ onwards all builds unless you're doing some overly specific meme build get homogenized when it comes to magic or ninjutsu usage. I ran Dragon Ninja from NG+ onwards until I changed to Dragon Ninja/Izanagi and the only 2 ninjutsu arts I ended up using frequently were Quick-Change and Shurikens, while for magic I used a bunch of shit - Leeching, Carnage, Pleiades, Extraction.

turn all your gear into divines and do the DLC

Tatenashi for toughness I guess? Also what guardian spirit would you recommend? I went with the bat, gives me unlimited ninjitsu chance with bonus to damage from agility as well as healing from killing blows and damage from behind buff. I got the rabbit from Okatsu as my secondary as it increases my ninjitsu attack.

You can try some NG+ or do what >>16481535 said. The DLC is a big spike in difficulty though, going from the base game and into that is not a gentle curve of difficulty. Even with all divines, some of them plus 1 or 2 I was getting destroyed. Only when I went through the effort of soul matching them higher did the DLC let up a little.

If you actually want to go full ninja, go Iga, Dragon Ninja doesn't use as much ninjitsu as it's mostly the only light armor set that's viable and competitive on higher difficulties which mostly uses close combat as it doesn't actually focus on ninjutsu that much. Both will at higher difficulties turn your game into a No Hit run because you'll get OHKO by pretty much everything.

You're supposed to use shurikens purely to boost your attack and the attack boost is actually pretty good, so they just have a completely different use.

For guardian spirit go Kato + whatever other one you like, I went Kato + Kujaku, but most people I've seen use Kato + Aya-komori

>Tatenashi for toughness I guess
Tatenashi for RFD.
With the set bonus and some good luck on accessory and inheritable rolls you can get both 100% RFD and 100% reduce elemental damage(guarding) on your gear which gives you much needed survivability.
As for the guardian spirit, you'll want to use Kato as your primary spirit until you finalize your build with 300 level weapons in Way of the Nioh for the much needed close combat damage boost. The secondary one can be whatever you want but I used Itokuri(spider) for the luck boost and for farming smithing texts, cracked ochoko cups and umbracite during co op.

Thats part of the fun of the DLC. I found it too boring when I went back to it after NG+.

I certainly do appreciate the help. I have recently updated my GTX 1060's drivers to the latest, upon hearing certain ominous news regarding security. I haven't tried Nioh after, however, since I've long put it out of my mind after running out of potential solutions.

I don't know if this is common knowledge but I was just reading a book on Etymology and it randomly mentioned an executioner named Derrick, who invented a system of hanging using pulleys and counterweights. This system was later employed in shipyard loading systems and even modern cranes use a "derrick".
Folklore says Derrick got the job when there were no applicants for the position of executioner, so the Earl of Essex pardoned Derrick, who was sentenced to death for rape, on the condition he became executioner. Derrick would later go on to hang the Earl of Essex.
And the first boss you fight in the Tower of London is named Executioner Derrick.
