Except that many of the default costumes are still pretty scandalous, and they left the original costumes in the game, and they didn't really fuck around too much with the base character models - so the new costumes look decent, if that's what you want - and the lewd costumes still look good if that's what you want. You can't do that in MK 10 & 11 because even if they released the MK9 outfits as alts - they made most of the the females so goddamned unattractive that it'd be like putting a bikini on a gorilla.
And I haven't really noticed a disproportionate amount of male fanservice in the game compared to the female - unlike in Mortal Kombat. Jann Lee, Bass, and Rig are bare chested cunt soakers, but Brad Wong, Eliot, Baymon, Zack, Hayabusa and such are fully clothed. You'd have to spend resources and P-Coins (or whatever) to unlock their ultimate costume and more sexy alts. And the males have far less costumes to choose from than the females, so it's not like they didn't know on which side their bread was buttered.
The DoA 6 situation was really just a tempest in a teapot that they couldn't undo once the memes got spreading around. MK11 is fucked from the ground up.

I wouldn't say it was shit, but it was never anything but mediocre at the absolute best the series had to offer. It's one selling point was it's ability to generate controversy in an era of shock entertainment. I never played the series much past MK3 because it lost it's shock appeal, and aside from a core fanbase - lost all relevancy as the controversy shifted to GTA/Manhunter and shit like that - while in general violence and gore in games (and other media) became accepted and old hat.

NRS builds itself around frame data while I think jap games build their characters and movesets and then assign data to the moves after seeing them in motion. The stuff about the show's popularity in Japan starts around the 10:12 mark.
Seems that when the show was airing originally in Japan, at the start it was doing very well but then later on it dwindled in popularity to relatively normal levels compared to other children's shows. Further, the network it was broadcasting on decided that it shouldn't be shown on primetime since it was such a competitive timeslot, and replaced it with One Piece for it's Primetime slot. However, even One Piece couldn't maintain ratings in this primetime and it plus all other anime were moved out of primetime.
It seems this story about "moving out of its timeslot" is what led ADV to think "this show bombed", and that's what they told the voice actors.
