A lot of people (myself included) like to talk about Japanese games that were unreleased in the west. However, what (good/popular) games were released in the west, but not in japan? I know for a fact that the mainline Civilization games haven't been released over there, but what other games are there?

ab7102  No.16390011

Mostly just a few sports games that are European only.

b5d73b  No.16390028

Pretty sure that the Japanese received the Civilization games in one form or another, like that Super Famicom version for the first one, and PC/Console releases for the rest.

be4f7c  No.16390054

From what I know, Morrowind was nota released in Japan, but there is a fan-translation patch.

The SNES version of Wario's Woods was exclusive to North America and Australia. There was a version for the Satallaview, but it was radically different and was merely a demo.

>>16390028

The PS1 and PC-98 ports of Civ I were exclusive to Japan.

Pretty sure Spyro 3 wasn't released there, as well as the Jak & Daxter games after the first one.

Morrowind

Gothic

a lot of stuff actually

I feel bad for them, but it explains why there never seems to be any japanese fanart of Vivec, Dagoth and the gang

They really dodged a bullet with Homowind. That's one of the gayest turds I've ever played. Ugly as sin, clunky, with horrible combat, a boring copy pasted world, and snore inducing lore.

Is PC gaming getting more popular in animeland? I want to see them being able to abandon Snoy and release most of their stuff on PC, so that I can get it for free.

Don't forget the great combat that amounted to rolling invisible dice and basically you had to spend an hour hearing

every time you want to kill anything.

From what I recall, I don't think they got Spyro: Year of the Dragon out there, which is odd since they got the previous two games, so I'd have assumed there was a market. But maybe it would have been too late a release.

2a03d0  No.16394097

>>16394088

The Spyro games were severely gimped in Japan, resulting in lack of popularity there. As usual, (((localizers))) fuck everything up, no matter where they're from. Let the original creators' vision through. Anyone trying to inject themselves onto someone else's creation is a fucking subhuman piece of shit that needs to be wiped off the face of the earth. It's easy for us here to forget that it affects Japan as well. It's bad on both sides and we should be teaming up against our enemies.

c7ae04  No.16394099

>>16394097

Really? What exactly did they do to them there?

2a03d0  No.16394104

>>16394099

They believed motion sickness would be a problem, so they fucked the camera controls and made Spyro's charge as slow as his regular walking.

Keep in mind, Sonic Adventure, a Japanese game, was already out in Japan by the time Spyro was released. But Spyro goes too fast, apparently.

Every american game ever.

c7ae04  No.16394138

>>16394104

Weird. I mean, Spyro's zippy, but not to the point I'd think he'd cause that. At least, I've never experienced such. Did they decide that themselves or somehow read that from native reviews out here when deciding to pick it up?

48c9ed  No.16394140

>>16394099

To elaborate on the motion sickness thing they zoomed out the camera and made it never change direction or pan even when charging so half the time you will be charging at the screen or to the side unless you stop everytime and push the shoulders. It doesn't even move when you enter a portal, replaced that with a fade out/in.

When you jump spyro goes to full height almost instantly and falls back down normally.

Charging and walking are the same speed.

Sparks doesn't have color indicators.

Game is littered with signs that give hints

Spyro squeeks when you do anything

But how is this "the guy game" when the cover has 6 girls and only one guy? This doesn't make any sense.

39ef4c  No.16394152

>>16394140

Fucking hell, that goes well beyond 'localising' and into 'we think we know better than the original developers' territory.

>>16394140

>All of that.

For what purpose? Not all of that relates to potential motion sickness.

On that note, do they by any chance have their own local romhacking scene or anything? Strikes me that either ripping their local scripts (assuming the translation was any good) and putting it into the US versions of 1 and 2, or replacing the fucked parts of the code with how it was supposed to be, would make for an opportunity for both games to shine a lot better. Or do they just spring for the US versions anyhow if they want to play them? First game doesn't seem like it would be that hard to understand on a gameplay front, even without knowing what was being said, but the second probably not so much with the specific orb tasks.

Also what company brought them over to Japan? Because that sounds almost Working Designs tier, even more so if they got the shit stick for translation as well.

I can't say why but localization, like hr, is there for its own sake, because manipulators insist it should be if only to appeal to bullish investors. I never looked into it but my guess is that a localization team wanted some easy notches on their belts.

And sparks doesn't change color because of a gimmick where you find dragonfly eggs ingame that send dragonflies to your pocketstation that you can level up like a tamagotchi then swap them for sparks to get new abilities.

Yeah, but there's a difference between addressing actual technical issues the native base had (say, a game that was complained about as being too slow be given speed improvements) and just going completely fucking overboard. But I suppose the former invites opportunity for the latter.

>And sparks doesn't change color because of a gimmick where you find dragonfly eggs ingame that send dragonflies to your pocketstation that you can level up like a tamagotchi then swap them for sparks to get new abilities.

So how are you supposed to measure health? Just remember how many times you've been hit? And what sort of new abilities?

>how are you supposed to measure health? Just remember how many times you've been hit?

from his glow, but without color it isn't as clear.

>And what sort of new abilities?

One is more health and that's all I could ever find. If you want to give it a shot the only ps1 emulator that emulates pocketstation is xebra.
