Which was better?

Unreal or Quake 2? Both using Voodoo3 3DFX.

338231  No.16389598

I played both back in the day and both were fucking amazing for different reasons. Wouldn't put one above the other. That one moment when you leave the Vortex Rikers for the first time made me completely fall in love with videogames for the first time instead of viewing them as just another entertainment possibility before.

Unreal really had that feel of being put down on an alien world. Reminded me of Super Metroid in a way.

Quake 2 felt better to play though, something about the feel and the feedback just felt stronger.

When it comes to Q3 or UT, I will have to side with UT, simply because of the variety of game modes. Assault maps were a fucking blast at a LAN. Plus it had the hot female goth bitches (Necris?) who made me diamonds back in the day. Q3 females were mostly ugly, except rocket-skates girl.

Quake 1 was better than unreal, quake 2 is just generic sci fi shit thats just doom 3D with all these machines fused with flesh that look demonic on a far away planet and you are some space marine only survivor type bullshit

Played both for the first time a couple of years ago and from what I remember Unreal was a lot better. Primarily because of enemy AI, variety in environments&aesthetics, weapon design (both defensive and offensive types). That being said quake 2 ain't the strongest installment in the series

159890  No.16389796

Unreal had:

>Neat weapon ideas, bad weapon implementation

>movement that feels like molasses

>levels that were too big for their own good and often resulted in a lot of walking while doing nothing for minutes at a time

>pretty gwaficks

>too much reuse of the same enemies

>good music

>some neat level ideas, poor execution

Quake 2 had:

>an all amateur team missing the creative people at id

>a lot of brown

>the most crates per capita of any level design of the 90s

>diagonal hitscan for some stupid fucking reason

>over-balanced weapons so nothing is particularly better than anything else

>good feeling movement

>the worst enemy design in an id game ever

>backtracking out the ass

>generic school shooter music that was basically a stereotype of the genre

I'll be honest OP I struggle to find the better one between these two massive turds.

I enjoyed Quake 2 for more stylish design and soundtrack. Unreal was more Epic.

Quake II. I've never liked Unreal's campaign much, it has one of the best opening levels in any FPS game ever with the escape from the prison ship, but once you get outside and the world opens up the level design kind of goes to shit. It has really cool weapons though.

Unreal environments/enemies + Quake 2 weapons/movement

hmmmmmmmm

>le school shooter music may may

<another I'm a big boy who thinks he's above listening to metal because I like ambient non-music from Q1

Quake 2 may be a mediocre game but the soundtrack is good. People who shit on it are niggers who can't admit the game had a silver lining. Reminder Reznor himself doesn't even consider his Q1 soundtrack to be music, just noise.

I'm playing through Active Directory. These levels are actually phenomenal. I get that they crank up engine limits, but the design itself just seems to blow the original game's levels out of the water. This dude is a trenchbroom savant. The forgotten is my favorite map so far.

I didn't really like Quake 2's single player levels. They were just meh. Especially compared to the first game and even many Doom levels. Multiplayer was great though, but I also love UT multiplayer. The Facing Worlds track is forever stuck in my head.

Agreed, the soundtrack is excellent in that game. Sonic Mayhem also did the soundtrack for Quake 3, which had less tracks I liked but still a couple of favorites.

You have to understand this was when they moved from good looking sprites to shitty polygons. They were both underwhelming.

Calm down Manson, take your butthole guitars and put em back. It's generic and boring shit.

7ec8e7  No.16401628

Unreal is a great single-player story campaign. Quake 2 is just wannabe DOOM.

Why do Quake 1 fanboys such as yourself have such an inferiority complex?

19834e  No.16402377

>>16389643

accurate.

quake 2 was disappointing, weak and forgettable.

they stripped out everything that had made the first one interesting.

"balanced" weapons meaning they all felt weak, boring samey enemies, dull levels. I can remember perhaps one or two rooms outside of the very first section of the first level of q2, but 75% of q1 levels were memorable, had personality.

even the first difficulty choosing hub in q1 was memorable, and fun in deathmatch.

the game may have been an accidental mishmash of styles, but it worked and should have been continued, instead of the cyborg bore-fest.

Unreal because you can make some sweet shit in UGold.

bad114  No.16402474

>>16402422

This guy stopped working on it. He switched to Unity iirc.

Unrealscript is really nice but UE1 suffers from one really big problem when comparing it to Quake 2. Which is that Quake 2's engine is FOSS and UE1 isn't. So it's severely limited in terms of what you can do. It's theoretically possible to do most of this shit in Quake 2 by just modding it ontop of being able to change anything via a source code edit.

>>16402474

lol I am this guy, I made that and I switched to Godot. I still play with Unreal now and then though, project files are broken atm but I plan to continue with this third person shooter mod but with all lock-on weapons.

Graphically, obviously Unreal. Quake 2's main draw was introducing colored light.

In single player, Unreal takes the cake with revolutionary open world maps and excellent AI: to this day, the skaarj warrior is the most sophisticate FPS enemy ever created. Only modding could salvage the Q2 campaign. Multiplayer wise, Quake 2 was king for a while while Unreal never registered, until obviously UT.

Quake 1's campaign was better than Unreal's. Q1 easily has the best fully 3D classic FPS level set. Unfortunately I think Blood and Duke3D might still outshine it in terms of all classic FPS games.

>>16403641

>third person shooter mod but with all lock-on weapons.

That reminds me of the Tribes 2 console port.

Unreal:

>great atmosphere and visuals

>great OST

>great, inspired weapon design, even if not all of them are winners

>level design in the first half is really strong, but it becomes kind of a clusterfuck in the second half

>slower movement without many advanced movement options, no bunny-hopping or strafejumping really

>great multiplayer, maps, and mods, though it was quickly supplanted by UT99 in this department and the modding scene moved to it pretty much overnight

Quake II:

>bland, somewhat uninspired atmosphere, visuals looked fine for their time but was only a modest improvement from Quake 1 with its colored lighting

>uninspiring but still fun OST

>weapons are mostly-stock but all effective and fun to use, the railgun fucking rules

>fast, fluid movement akin to Quake 1

>level design in the first half is kind of boring and linear but gets more interesting in the second half

>great multiplayer, maps, and mods even after Quake III Arena came out

Are 3dfx voodoo cards still 75-100$? I almost had one 2 cards for no more than 9$ both. Still butthurt that I messaged first, but the faggot who called the seller in the morning got it. Guess I should have called him in the middle of the night.
