Unreal:
>great atmosphere and visuals
>great OST
>great, inspired weapon design, even if not all of them are winners
>level design in the first half is really strong, but it becomes kind of a clusterfuck in the second half
>slower movement without many advanced movement options, no bunny-hopping or strafejumping really
>great multiplayer, maps, and mods, though it was quickly supplanted by UT99 in this department and the modding scene moved to it pretty much overnight
Quake II:
>bland, somewhat uninspired atmosphere, visuals looked fine for their time but was only a modest improvement from Quake 1 with its colored lighting
>uninspiring but still fun OST
>weapons are mostly-stock but all effective and fun to use, the railgun fucking rules
>fast, fluid movement akin to Quake 1
>level design in the first half is kind of boring and linear but gets more interesting in the second half
>great multiplayer, maps, and mods even after Quake III Arena came out
