I don't have an opinion on the games before 3 but I can't say I'm a fan of the series. Way too casual as a dungeon crawler and way too simplistic as an RPG. Most of the discussion seems to be revolved around waifus but visual novels focused on romance do a much better job at making better girls. When I played P4, I found most of the teens insufferable and all the adults seemed much more interesting. Yet none of them join your team.
As for 3 onward, I think you would be better off playing a dating sim or a different dungeon crawler. Still, the games have some nice music and stylish presentation. But that's all I can say for the later games.

I tried playing 4 but couldnt stomach anything about it, it just bored the life out of me. 4 golden polishes/updates the game, mainly being able to pick your abilities on level up. enjoyable, and barely right before it overstays its welcome.
P5 is the most polished of the three.
P1 and P2 are good and different from the other 3.
It goes without saying you're better off playing SMT mainline and digital devil saga first since those games are infinitel superior, with the exception of 4 which is mediocre.

Yes they are all good. Persona 4 is my personal favorite because of the ebin twists and the fact that it is the only game I've played where you physically beat the gay out of multiple characters.

Ive only done Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 golden and I really love both games. They're among my favorite games. (if you can, id suggest doing persona 3 FES instead of persona 3 portable though. A lot of cinematices and the open world aspect of the game was taken out, killing the immersion. It's still good if you like visual novels but for me FES was better)
Each has their own faults as no game is really perfect. P3p's gameplay(combat) was very boring to me and the beginning is a bit slow. However, things ramp up very fast and the story becomes amazing. P4g's gameplay(combat) is not as bad as P3p and it does suffer from a kind of boring beginning, but you really grow to love the characters (i also loved the characters in p3p as well).
There is a really unique style of music and color and design that also leaves a big impact on you. Not to mention the waifus arent half bad

I picked up P3:FES a while back and I have about 60 hours into it. I'm enjoying it personally. What made me want to pick it up is that it seemed to have a reputation for being hard but being honest it's easy as fuck. It's a decent game but not as dark or difficult as I was hoping for. The characters are interesting to me though and the social links are cool for the most part. I have about 60 hours into the game currently so I'm probably getting close to the end or at least the final leg of the game.
this is my first SMT game and I'm starting to think I should have started with Digital Devil Saga instead

If you know nipponese, start with the jap versions of Persona 1, 2 Innocent Sin and 2 Eternal Punishment.
If you don't know nipponese but don't care about a gimped and incomplete experience, go with P1 PSP and P2 IS PSP.

The characters of SMT1 were high school students. A spin-off, SMT: if…, carried on that tradition and went a step further by using their school environment as a pivotal location. if… eventually inspired a successor, Megami Ibunroku Persona, which introduced some mythology about the nature of "personas". That's the real kicker for me, SMT has really enjoyable party customization and modern Persona doesn't.

The original Persona 1 music got fucked in the remake, and is pretty basic.
Persona 2 had a serious soundtrack with loads of subdued pieces with alternative organic sound choices (sound mixing the old fashioned way, using sounds made at the studio and mostly recorded sounds to detach itself from stock) intermixed with bangin' electronica. The game has a pretty sweet auto-battle system where you set up actions and rely on setting up your party's personas to fuse attacks strategically, like a fucked up Crono Trigger, it was pretty great.
Persona 3 is rap battle rock j-pop fusion with a mix of waaaaaaaaaay too much party AI bullshit which gave way to RNG a lot on higher difficulties, since in most versions you can't alter your party's moves to stop the Marin Karin spam.
Persona 4 had a heavy reliance on the lead singer's vocals for it's music, so engrish all over the place. But it fits, since they're all happy major key songs with lyrics you can't quite understand until you really focus, after which you hear some pretty sad lyrics. "Your Affection", for example, is retardedly happy in sound, but's about someone giving someone else a pep talk after they've been through utter misery, and it fits the game's theme, both the song and the fact that it's about understanding things that are obscured. I thought it was cool, probably wasn't intentional, though. The game's much more linear then Persona 3, but the actual battles in the game are much more fun to play since you can control party members, and the game's meta is much less about random criticals, instead focusing on resource (HP/MP) management, since bosses tend to focus on outlasting you instead of raw damage or RNG bullshit.
Persona 5 is fucking style incarnate graphically, and focuses on jazz and R&B type songs, and the singer is much clearer in pronounciation then in Persona 4. It has a huge emphasis on out-of-combat stealth, which is a bit shallow, but if you don't ambush your enemies consistantly you're going to be at a huge disadvantage since all of your characters are high-damage, can't-take-a-hit types and have low SP growth compared to past games. This isn't actually a problem since it's just an incentive to ambush and stealth around like a retard ninja, and it actually makes most enemies a threat instead of an annoyance as a result. It's a minor thing, but it does it for me.
The first two games don't get enough love, especially since they had pretty great battle systems and actual adult characters, mature themes, one of the characters in the Persona 2: Innocent Sin turns out to have sold herself to men and it comes out of nowhere because she actually kept it a secret like a real person fuckin' would when they're ashamed, it's realistic, it didn't define her entire character like modern writing tends to do. Also having actual adults on the team is refreshing since it allows for plots outside of "Schoolkids still have to go to school while dealing with the main issue" you ditch that shit immediately to solve the city-wide problem.
When they get to Persona 6, they're going to reuse the same format and while the game's going to be okay, the moralizing schoolkid learns a lesson format is getting predictable.
