Is there any game or series that has better boss fights than the Mega Man franchise if playing buster only?

I can't think of a single game or series that beats them not just on quality and quantity but even also how the very idea of boss fights should look and function in a game as well. In a way I like to think that the franchise even invented the very concept of how to do proper boss fights.

All great boss fights in gaming should be challenging pattern based fights that test the limits of the player and force them to have to get good. All great games should also have a variety of different unique bosses to fight. There are plenty of game series that do this well of course but none as well as most of the Mega Man franchise. The one negative I'll give though is that the boss weakness in many of the games does destroy them too well but that is why I said if buster only. In some like X4 the right weapon destroys them pretty bad but others like NES MM3 the bosses can still be pretty tough. In a way the weapons kind of function like a built in easy mode crutch for the player but you can always also play the more challenging path and not use the weapons for at least most of the games.

So basically, when playing buster only these games have the best boss fights in all of gaming and more importantly, are boss fights done right.

DMCV is a recent example of a game that excels in the boss fight category.

Music wise they are amazing too.

There are better bosses just in the run 'n' gun genre. But in particular, scrolling 2D shooters are the reigning champions of boss fights.

A friendly reminder that MMX5 has the best buster only, unarmored X boss fights of the series.

That seems dubious when X5 has a couple bosses that are straight up bullshit in terms of nigh-undodgeable attacks.

I'd say X2 probably has the best assortment of X-buster-only, unupgraded bosses of the series. Excepting the 1st Violen fight and the tedious Zero fight.

Name one. If you say Volt Kraken I'm going to call you a doo doo head because that's the game's best boss.

Black Devil and I think Ragna Bagna v2 had one too.

Most Mega Man games have a few bosses that are really repetitive if not straight up bad design. I'm struggling to think of one that doesn't actually.

Oh yeah, the two worst bosses of the game, I honestly forgot about them.

>>16271675

I'd say most Mega Man X games. Classic had this element of randomness to it that combined with short health bars made them more intense than repetitive. X had very easy patterns combined by a general lack of variety.

Has any game done a "reverse Mega Man" where you can clear stages/dungeons in any order, but you start with all weapons and you lose a weapon to each boss?

For what purpose?

Might as well do a buster-only run. I'd done Mega Man X without the dash boots at least.

For scaling difficulty in a non-linear world that makes sense mechanically, as opposed to "now the whole world spawns more enemies because you levelled up", just think about it for two damn seconds.

The final boss to DMC3 is an amazing boss fight. I always thought people were just over hyping it until I actually sat down and played it. My second favorite boss is Agni and Rudra since I was forced to stop rushing and be patient.

Well, the entire game is built around getting there which incidentally is also the reason it makes Vergil one of the best rival/antagonist in videgames in general and the number 1 in its genre.

>>16269867

I don't like King Cerberus' theme, mainly because it makes a small reference to DMC3's Cerberus but it doesn't use the motif in the boss theme. Vergil's theme ain't bad but it doesn't do any callbacks to Sibling Showdown, Rites of Passage or Reunion which are the themes most associated with Vergil. The only boss themes I really liked were Urizen's and the remix of Psycho Siren when you fight Shadow, I wish both King Cerberus and Vergil themes were like that one.
