They shouldn't have it mixed in with the general games market, at the very least. If anything, they should make either a companion store app or a software equivalent of a "velvet curtain" which you need expanded age verification to get past. That wouldn't stop people bitching about wanting corporations to uphold their particular form of "morality", but it would provide enough of a cover against most criticism since you wouldn't see or have access to anything of that nature without explicitly making the conscious decision to bring it into your house.
And again, I'm not saying this is the case right now, but potentially as things are - it leaves Valve wide open to anybody with a chip on their shoulder against them to fund the development of a game designed purely to generate outrage, get it pushed through, and write hit pieces about how horrible Steam is for allowing this shit on their store - all for hits to their blog page or as a way of smearing their reputation with the general masses and driving business to Epic or whatever. Pure speculation on my part, but I wouldn't put anything past the Chinese when it comes to slitting a competitors throat.
