Tencent is continuing to double down on how it restricts younger players from accessing some of its games in China, this time with a digital lock system that will lock out players under the age of 13. Xinhuanet reports that the digital lock will apply to Honour of Kings and PUBG Mobile initially across 12 Chinese cities. The lock will take effect for players 13-years-old or younger, and will require a parent or guardian to unlock the game for them to play. Tencent is using technology such as facial recognition and player ID checks to ascertain the ages and identities of those playing Honour of Kings and other titles in China. In addition, it has already imposed limits on how long young players can play the game, and imposed rules for streaming its game content prohibiting things like violence, information about gambling or pornography, national politics, or other "damaging behavior."
While the latter of those was to fall into line with Chinese internet governance requirements, the remainder seem to be part of a push from Tencent to limit the access of minors to its games in accordance with the Chinese government's concerns about addiction and myopia in children. Those concerns are what spurred a nine-month-long freeze on new video game approvals in the country last year that ended in December. Since then, games have been approved in batches as the government works through its backlog. Last week, it was rumored that China had paused new applications momentarily to work through that backlog, though NetEase CEO William Ding contradicted the reports and said there had been no halt.

I'm not a fan of the idea of the Chinese (and those who bow to them) requiring spy cameras being installed in everybody's houses - but a lot of normalfags are just fine and fucking dandy with the idea - and it would be nice if there was an option to auto-pauses/dynamically censors adult content games when the camera recognizes children entering the room. That way, there's even less of a chance that the kid will walk in and see something their parents have sheltered them from, and god forbid the nightmare scenario of prompting a heart-to-heart honest discussion on some everyday aspect of the real world that they've been bullshitting him about all this time - and which the kid already knows all about from the older kids on the back of the school bus.

Laugh all you want but most facial recognition software works on hooking up on key points on an object (in this case a human face) and trying to keep up with its movements by taking multiple pictures frame by frame and predicting where each of the features are to then match it with an existing library of pictures of similar eyes. When you give it an input that looks like it can process but that it doesn't quite know how you're virtually rendering yourself invisible to the software and that is the one reason why security still employs a lot of camera jockeys. As they can point out anomalies.
Basically it's a race between the developers/sponsors of the facial recognition software to optimize it while avoiding asking it to process too much information and those who want to take advantage of it while avoiding standing out.
