I think I'm starting to remember why I found Samurai Warriors and DW5 so fun a few decades ago, because while Sanada Maru has it's fair share of problems like

>Exploration maps and the exploration tasks

>The weapon upgrade shop opening up grinding rather than having multiple weapon drops with various weapon mods, thus leading to either needing to grind gold or Iron Sand and gold to up attack/speed/etc.

>A metric asston of reused assets in the exploration maps and the castle towns

>No siege battles(as in no actually storming the castle)

>Completely glossing over big shit like Oda's assassination, multiple characters dying through illness without fanfare(With nothing but a literal "Dude died a week later" line to send them off) or fucking Okehazama

>Sweeping characters like Kotaro Fuma, Tadakatsu Honda and Naomasa li under the rug for the last few chapters without any closure for them

>Chapters 9 and 11, in which no actual battles occur and all that happens is the game establishes Yukimura Sanada as a pussywhipped faggot who has nothing better to do than dote on some cold bitch who eventually ruins everything and also a fair amount of exploration map backtracking for nothing

It also was a blast from the past and it had a lot of things I wanted from SW/DW back then.

>That hyper attack mechanic

>All those characters with excellent movesets including my old favorites Hanzo and Tadakatsu and making some like Saika(the rifleman mercenary dude) really fun to play, outside of say Chacha, Katsuyori Takaeda, Hideyoshi and Mitsunari Ishida everyone played really good

>Mighty attacks giving a bit of risk reward for attacking with slow windup stun moves or perfect blocking

>Mechanics like shadow dodge and charge giving some sick combo potential and actually giving some form of variety to fighting beefed up officers on the highest difficulty

>Masayuki Sanada and Sasuke in particular were absurdly fun to play as new characters, and Masayuki while being a clear as day mary sue was a great character who carried the story

>Those last few chapters with that one music track playing

>that entire 100/10 soundtrack

I want to get back into musou. All I played were Samurai Warriors(normal and XL, loved everything about that game), Dynasty Warriors 5 XL(Loved a lot about that game, especially the dynasty and extreme modes) and Dynasty Warriors 8(Was pretty divded on it, I hated how everyone could use every weapon thus not really differentiating every character that much, also ambition mode was a joke and outside of being flashier I didn't feel like it added much to what I liked about DW5, without even having Xtreme/Dynasty modes to boot). Is Samurai Warriors 4/4-II any good? Orochi, All Stars, any of the anime licensed ones?

What makes these game and gameplay style so appealing? I had the same thing with some of the later party Ys games, where they were clearly inferior than the previous titles but they were still inexplicably so fun to play despite a flood of problems.

Not much love for Musou, huh?

because retarded people think they're button mashers and the kind of games you play to turn off your brain

6b1776  No.16133919

I love crowd control games like DW and Sengoku Basura, but there are a depressing lack of them, as well as an overall lack of decent titles in the genre.

2cbdc9  No.16133931

I wanted to ask, was DW9 really that bad? Outside of open world implying lots of down time through traveling through an empty world, what else did it do wrong?

>>16133796

It feels like more. These games aren't really what I think of when I think PS2 game that pushed the limit.

>>16133805

In a way they are button mashers, but there's a lot of fun just mowing down a lot of enemies as a one man army.

>>16133919

I want to give the later Basuras a try but I don't have a PS3/4, since I remember the cuhrayzee generals mentioned them quite a lot.

a8614c  No.16133951

>>16133931

Yes it was that bad.

I want you to think about how a DW game is structured, closed lanes between arenas where you can fight. Now you might say being in an enclosed area is bad but not only can you litter enemies in the path, forcing you tu push up and battle them, it gives you a sense of where to head next once you've cleared out a room. That is essentially what it is, clearing hallways and rooms of enemies but still makes it fun.

DW9 basically opens it up, which means no more rooms, no more sense of pushing and way too broad a scope. Not only do you need to use frigging towers to see shit but battles are centered around hub towns, making it feel alot less empty. Where once you could use a rage rush and score 100+ kills because the enemy was packed so tight in the hallway, in DW9 you'd be lucky to get 20 because everyone was spaced more openly.

2cbdc9  No.16133996

Try out games from the Sengoku Basara series. They were created as basically a challenge to Samurai Musou, with "What if we made a Musou game, but tore away any realism and had the world run on rule of cool."

It works well.

42364f  No.16137739

I'm a bit disappointed by 4-II. The fact that every campaign has five levels and no alternate scenarios, and nothing but that meh castle raid mode from SW1 Xtreme legends is pretty lame. I look up the original 4 and apparently it had campaigns with 8 stages and a mode that seems to mirror the dynasty mode from DW5.

>>16134044

Like I said, PS3 and all. Besides I looked it up and as silly as this sounds there aren't that many enemies, at least according to the video I saw which was a playthrough of heaven difficulty of some battle.

>I'm a bit disappointed by 4-II

A bit ? It's literally a DLC pack sold as a full game. You should be as disappointed in it as you humanly fucking can.

And besides, SW4 was pretty shit as well. Battles were small scale and super attacks were distributed like candy. I bought the thing on my Yakuza Machine and just never felt an ounce of fun.

42364f  No.16137801

>>16137779

I'm feeling that, yeah. Guess I'm dropping it, Sanada felt much more fun that this despite having the shit exploration/town aspects to it.

Reminder that the reason why it was sold as a full separate game in the first place was because Crapcom sued TK over being able to unlock content in games by using discs of other games.

>>16137801

Funny how Sanada Maru which was basically a beta for DW9 ended up being the better game over DW9.

If only it can become a template for future games and maybe with the hypothetical routes from DW8 too.

>>16140906

I'm still mad at how they made every possible choice in Extra officially be non-canon and made the manga be the real canon.

I'm glad that in a game where a lot of cut corners existed, they didn't skimp out on gameplay or breast jiggling.

52c1bf  No.16146979

What is the go to best game if you are only going to play one of them? The only ones I've played are the Dragon Quest Heroes ones. The second being substantially better for having an actual world instead of just a menu of battles. They both fall apart at the end with extra bosses trying to force online play.

91b8ef  No.16147858

I wished there were more silly themed Musou games, pretty much anything could be a fun Musou.

>Kemono Friends Musou: either defeating large amounts of Ceruleans while you liberate the park across different islands, or a more silly take where it's just a game to them; they still fight fiercely but know when to stop before they seriously hurt each other; defeated friends make exaggerated gestures and death gurgles and everyone can wear silly armor and gear to look more "tough"

>thunderbolt Fantasy Musou: characters keep their puppet appearance so you have wild flailing puppets flying all over the screen

>kaiju Musou: use known giant monsters to mow down other Giants monsters, armies or aliens; they all communicate with roars and grunts

Personality-wise, yes I agree with you. A possibly gay tomboy princess is much better than a timid samurai girl who apologizes constantly for no reason, but Kai-Hime's look in 4 is complete fucking garbage. She looks great in SW3, why did they fuck up her design so much on 4?

>>16146979

>What is the go to best game if you are only going to play one of them?

Dynasty Warriors 7 is normally said to be the best one, but I think DW8 is better on terms of content. For it's story mode it has 5 factions each with 2 endings each, a historical ending and a hypothetical ending. And for mindless fighting, an arcadey and somewhat grindy mode called ambition mode where you pick any playable character that character becomes Big Boss in ancient China kidnapping recruiting every officer you defeat to create the ultimate nation.

9e2bd2  No.16147956

I know that Omega Force usually take other projects and try their hand on other genres, but god dang, DW9 was lost potential. I really felt like a War of the Three Kingdoms Warlord or Officer by playing fetch quests that should have been relegated to the fucking peasants. Did Koei forget about their Romance of the Three Kingdoms games? use the management system from there and make it work for this game. Open-World gimmick aside, I can respect that they were trying something new, but everything fell apart when they couldn't retain the cheesy lines and gameplay with being a Musou game and being historical. And those Chinks didn't let them off, not one bit.

05819a  No.16148098

>>16146979

I generally recommend DW7 even if DW8 has more content. DW7 story is well presented and each one of the 60+ character gets some spotlight, and those who die get a decent send off except Taishi Ci who only gets an in battle text.

8fba6a  No.16148109

DW 8 was pretty fun. 120 hours and only 15% of achievements so far.

277547  No.16148137

Ambition mode's a joke though, missions that end in 1 minute flat or even 30 seconds with nothing interesting about it.

Remember DW5's Xtreme mode where you could stumble on various objectives, enemy types, shops, etc? I do not understand how PS2 games had more content than fully priced $60 next gen games.

Just give me legacy DW5 modes, with SW1 multiple paths and story, with Sanada Maru gameplay, that's all I ask for.

Why was Okehazama completely glossed over in Sanada Maru and 4-II?

806eb3  No.16148218

I started with Dynasty Warriors 3, played 5 and 5 Empires, all for PS2. What game will give me a good experience that isn't insane level of autism tier like Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate?

4c6f9a  No.16148282

>>16133931

I'm a die hard musou fan, and I hated DW9. It officially took the place of 6 in my book.

What disappointed me the most out of it wasn't the cloned characters or the fact that they could have just copied and pasted the DW8 combat system into an open world setting, it was that when they discussed how battlefields would play out they used a design model by showing the DW6 version of Yellow turban rebellion and placed in in a open world map of China. The implication was that each battlefield was going to be unique and varied like previous Dynasty Warriors, the only difference was that now you would travel this big map to get to those battlefields and you'd be able to enter and leave them via the Gate Captain gates. In the end they axed that idea and just made every battle field a boring open plane.

4c6f9a  No.16148292

>>16137779

Well it was supposed to be Samurai Warriors 4 Xtreme Legends, but then Capcom US sued Koei Tecmo US claiming they created the whole disc swap technology. Since KT Japane didn't want to finance a proper defense for KT US, KT Japan basically said, okay what ever, we'll just sell our expansions as full games now.

277547  No.16148496

Extella isn't bad so far, I like how everything controls and the likes of Lancer and Archer are fun to play. However I can tell this game really wants me to like Saber/Nero and I wish I could just play the remaining servants instead, it's embarrassing sitting through these UMU YOU LIKE ME TOO MASTER cutscenes.

>In the end they axed that idea and just made every battle field a boring open plane.

Fuck that's depressing. Would have been interesting if the open world was a hub world with shit for you to in between major battles and some world building stuff instead of how it turned out.

>>16148496

>UMU YOU LIKE ME TOO MASTER cutscenes.

That's to be expected in Fate games.

4c6f9a  No.16155425

>>16155353

I think what their original intention was for the Battlefields to be treated almost like dungeons. Think of it like Skyrim; there is this big open world to explore but each major city and dungeon is it's own map separate from the big open world. I'm sure that's what they had originally intended but just could put the resources together to do it.

9 was to ambitious for what they were capable of and just like 6, history repeated itself.

I'm hoping they will try the open world setting again, but this time stick to the original plan, make it like Toukiden 2, but grander, and just copy and past the DW8 combat system.

Pic related.

The wiki only says she works with the main bad guy, which wouldn't surprise me if that means she's just a NPC.

She's only been a jobber in these games since she first ever appeared.

>and this story has taken a turn for the worse.

What amazing plot twist did they do now?
