I don't know about that. Sure, everything up until sun and moon was terribly boring. But I was actually impressed with how much they tried to break the mold in sun and moon. There were so many little things which were different from previous games that it made me enjoy a pokemon main game for the first time in years.

B&W2 were the last good set of Pokémon games to date. PWT and Join Avenue were the best new additions to the mainline games since the Battle Frontier. Story doesn't need to matter in Pokémon, as long as the atmosphere and sense of adventure is there. Don't think they really conveyed the evil nature of man very well, but they went a step in the right direction with Cyrus and Ghetsis. Just need to refine it more in my opinion. Give them a better incentive than "I'm smart but alone" or "I want to rule the world".

Keledo took the Kelpie idea. I thought about what to do for starters. Each starter will begin as a pure type. However upon their first evolution they each gain a secondary typing. Grass becomes Grass/Fairy, Fire becomes Fire/Steel, and Water becomes Water/Fighting. The designs were for a different region. The Fire/Steel Pokémon was a wolverine that used it's claws to claw out avalanches to eat buried and dead Pokémon. The Fire/Steel type can be reworked into a mercurial wyvern based on alchemy as Merlin was an alchemist in legend. The Water/Fighting type I always wanted to be based on a pirate of some sort. It can be based on Excalibur, but swords are steel. So Excalibur is better reserved for a pseudo-legendary steel type.

Starters aside. I want a fully rotateable camera. Game for overworld could be collaborated with Monolith to use their render engine for Pokémon with seamless load times going in and out of buildings. To give LGPE credit, Gen 1 at least had a world that doesn't hold your hand and tell you where to go. I'd like players to figure out where to go next on their own rather than be told to progress the story. I'd like exploring to be fun again without plot and exposition being obviously dumped in my face. I play Pokémon to be the best and catch 'em all first. BW2 didn't pander to Gen 1 solely, it pandered to every gen up until that point with every gym leader and champions appearing in PWT. With HGSS it's a faithful remake that had Kanto as its second region.

Ah, I see you realize that DP was the low point of the franchise before the 3DS era, although I don't know why you think XY are better than USUM, let alone the second best game. Maybe it's because you didn't bother with Gen 5 and I don't realize what a massive step down the 3DS era was. SM and USUM were baby steps in the right direction (USUM had a lot of everything I like about Pokemon and I see nobody talking about it), and I have a feeling Gen 8 will be better, but not by much. No, RSE and FRLG weren't that great. What you're experiencing is the fact that Pokemon is a mechanically fine game, but the structure they've relied on for over 20 years at this point wasn't great to begin with and has gotten tiresome. The GameCube games have only one difference in the moment to moment gameplay in that Double Battles are mostly standard (which should be done more often frankly, given that VGC uses doubles as well), the major difference is in structure. The GameCube games limit your Pokemon options and make the major enemies use certain strategies, instead of giving you a theoretical infinite amount of Pokemon and enemies relying on type matchups to be challenging. As a matter of fact this can be boiled down to the Battle Sims from Gale of Darkness, it's a microcosm of the entire game. I've thought for a while about how to change Pokemon's structure for the better, and I've come up with a few answers. The first is to de-emphasize the league story and instead give the player a number of equally valid paths, from helping people solve their problems, to gay contest shit, to of course the usual league challenge and separately evil team plot. Basically if it would give you a star on your trainer card it's a valid path. The other would be a sort of mission based structure, where you're sent in to solve a problem. I could go into detail on what kind of games would surround those concepts, but nobody wants to hear me be an idea guy.

What's so good about DP? It's slow as fuck in every aspect, most of the new Pokemon aren't great (on in some cases are completely busted comparatively), you don't get many options to use them anyway, and even then some of them are limited to the post game, it removes the Battle Frontier from the previous game, relies too much on fucking retarded HMs, and is only well liked because of online multiplayer which isn't even that great. Platinum is marginally better but it's based off a flawed engine and a flawed game, HGSS improves it by cutting out the bad game entirely. Face it, DP were the worst Pokemon games released until XY came out.

I liked going through a romhack of ultra moon/sun that made the game much harder. I didn't even bother with the base game with how bad I heard it was. I was not suprised that colosseum/gale of darkness had better 3d animations due to the lazyness of the devs in recent years.

Also manga-style panels show up to show the trainer's face (in engine second camera render) if the Pokémon takes a critical hit, status condition, or faints. There will be settings for both battle messages, HUD lag, and animation.

HUD lag can be fast or original. Original drains HP bar like the old games. Fast shows the full section of HP lost before quickly draining the bar. The bar will deplete with an animation based on each type (ex Fire burns like paper, grass wilts, Dragon is an crackling blood red mist etc.)

Battle messages can be set to Pro. Pro mode skips effectiveness, critical hit, and status affliction/effect strings which can be shown through visual feedback. Buff/Debuff has a color for each stat and two different rise/fall annimations depending of one or two stage changes.

Other QoL visual engine changes would be feedback without a cheat guide on the second screen. Weather/Field effects are constantly shown even with battle animations. You can see spikes and stealth rock on the ground on your side at all times when set. Also you can see Reflect, Light Screen, Safeguard, Substitute, Ingrain, and other move that affect Pokémon on the lasting field.

Pokémon will have up to 3 hurt animations depending on effectiveness of the move. Barely effective (x0.25) moves play no hurt animation. The Pokémon is idle. Not-Very Effective (x0.5) plays a minor hurt animation (this also plays with poison/burn and spikes/stealth rock). Normal attacks play a moderate hurt animation. Super-Effective (x2) hits pay a major hurt animation. Ultra-Effective (x4) plays a severe damage animation. Critical hits cause the screen to flash red and play a damage animation one stage higher than the base effectiveness with exception of Ultra-Effective, which is the highest tier.

Animation tweaks include a prepare animation where a Pokémon readies an attack next round. An exhaustion animation for moves like Hyper Beam. Punch, Kick, Tackle, and special animations. I want Pokémon animations to give context to battle as to give trainers context in how to plan the next move. Plus the animations will essentially replace the HUD in pro mode.

Also there's a hard mode that improves AI and buffs all trainer Pokémon with higher IVs (3 max IVs). Gym leaders have Pokémon with 4/5 perfect IVs. And the elite four will have their signature Pokémon perfect IVs.

One more thing to add to hard mode: normal trainers will have hold items like berries you cannot steal (but can disarm). Gym leaders and elite four will have Z-moves. Elite Four in both normal and hard mode will have megas.

If Megas weren't removed in Gen 7 then Megas are here to stay. We may as well make them an obstacle in single player since GF wants single player is a glorified tutorial to online with no post game content now. I'd bring back post-game with a battle frontier and possibly extra story anthologies as free expansion packs/free DLC.
