Obviously there tends to be less shitposting but it's also easier to have group projects together on a forum compared to an image board. The issue is that leftism exists and forums cannot exist any more without being completely taken over by it. You either have a forum with no rules and everything in it it's a shitshow or you have rules and try to enforce a code of conduct. Whether you like it or not you can't trust people to behave themselves just because, you either have to enforce it as an admin or whatever community you're building has to create its own culture that polices itself. The issue with forums is people can only discuss topical things and behave for so long and are primed to go off topic most of the time, that's why almost every forum under the sun has a misc sub-forum and this is usually the one that gets the most traffic in between actual discussions. Where forums and mainstream sites go wrong is that they inherently rely on attracting as many people as possible. They want a city-sized population of users, constantly active at all times, constantly flooding their site with lowest common denominator posts. Some start as an attempt to create a community, but they always fail to realize that the goal of growth for the sake of growth is that it will turn the whole thing into a commodity. Something to be leveraged for ad money and products instead of any kind of legitimate, sincere care for the community it was supposed to be.
NeoFAG was probably a pretty normal forum at one point, but the second it got big, the owners saw shekels. When they started attracting "insiders" and industry personalities to leak info, neoFAGs started getting an ego. They weren't a community. They were some kind of elite society of only the best and most enlightened patrician gamers whom members of the video game industry respected so much that they'd tell them their secrets and make them feel as if they were the true heart of the industry. Of course, they were just a bunch of faggots and retards with shit taste and a penchant for gargling cock, and most Triple-A devs were desperate for a good knob-slobbering.
ResetERA only came about because another group of fags wanted all the benefits and wealth of being neoFAG with slightly fewer retards to act as a liability. They even set themselves up with the same kind of holier-than-thou ego that neoFAGs were infamous for, under the promise that this time it would be for real and they'd be an actual classy, professional, civil forum for smart people with smart tastes. Now they're still flooded with faggots and retards, no one cares about them, but redditors and other subhumans still go there thinking they are getting something valuable out of being part of the biggest forums.
What anyone should really want is what 8chan has the potential to offer. Smaller communities of a few hundred people, maybe a bit more or less depending on the topic. Smaller groups are easier to unify and control. They also have a better time self-regulating. The only trick is getting everyone on board to understand the same general attitude and then getting them to stick around. The many technical hiccups and raids 8chan has dealt with have done a great deal of damage, but if this shit could stay stable for a few years and the site admins and BOs could make a strong, continuous effort to excise cancer, we'd have something perfect here.
tl;dr Forums are cities and cities are cancer. 8chan is a cozy close-knit town and has the best chance of providing you with a good place for discussion and interaction.

The later games were not as big a success, mostly down to oversaturation and the platforms they're on. With how well Odyssey is doing, it would be interesting to see whether 2D Mario would sell on the Switch, and I mean a proper from the ground up 2D Mario, not the port of NSMBU. NSMB2 sold 12 million to NSMB's 30, despite both the DS and 3DS having very sizeable install bases, so most likely, market oversaturation and a lesser focus on casual normalfags would mean that 2D will not be nearly as successful.
On a last note, if you're using sales as an argument, I sincerely hope you don't like Zelda at all. Zelda's records don't seem that impressive when you realize that Animal Crossing, both Wild World and New Leaf, sold close to 12 million each.
I also hope you don't like Metroid, Star Fox, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Pikmin or any fucking series that isn't Mario, Pokemon and Animal Crossing.
