The art direction, music, world design, and gameplay mechanics are all top tier. Enemy variety is a bit shallow, but it's worth playing through. I bought a PSTV just to play it, but know that even with the Dualshock 4, the gyro does not work meaning that you can only use the gravity slide in a straight line. This eliminates any of the race side quests, but it was still tremendous fun despite the handicap.

Enjoyable pair of games in my experiences with them, assuming you already have a PS4 (I wouldn't recommend buying one at this point). Just don't give Sony money for them at this point, which admittedly makes the remaster of the first an issue, since it was intentionally short printed in NA, and there is no means to get the save data bonus to GR2 from the easier to find Vita original of GR1, if you care about that. Online servers for the second game are also already taken down, so it's not like you can legitimately acquire all the costumes for Kat at this point anyhow (maybe save data manipulation, but I seem to recall a thread recently that SCEJ banning that ability).

Also, do note that unlike Silent Hill/Siren, the games are not horror themed, even if they sometimes have horror designs to the enemies.

The good news is that I got the EU version of the first game for 30 bucks so that should get the locked content in the second. I’m glad people are saying it’s a decent game as I jumped on the deal before I knew much about the game other than it being on my backlog for a while.

Also, I figured the horror designs would mostly just be in the enemies. does it appear in the atmosphere or world design at all as well?

Main thing to be concerned about there then is that the save data bonuses aren't regionally specific (IE: PAL GR1 -> PAL GR2). I've heard they're not from other anons, but can't say for sure myself. As to the online locked costumes, you'd still be missing the work clothes (that outfit in your image; not sure why Kat would just toss her original ones out after getting her new shifter suit, as they seem like comfy town clothes regardless), the Shifter 1.0, and School 1.0 outfits from the first game, which don't carry over (Military, Maid, and Spy do).

>does it appear in the atmosphere or world design at all as well?

To a degree. As >>16008132 says, there's a fair bit of fantasy aspects, but then there's also The World Pillar which has a notable sense of claustrophobia to it, where it's so large and without landmark, it becomes hard to tell if you're going up or down after a while without manually checking.

It's one of those games where the appeal is misunderstood or missed. It's got a very appealing structure that feels like it has more in common with an anime than a video game which results in some very interesting game play and story beats. Easily the best game on the PS4 and the best game of the generation is Gravity Rush 2, no question. GR1 is also fantastic and the PS4 version running at 60fps is tremendous. What's neither fantastic or tremendous is the US price tag of it which was an amazon exclusive physical copy and is now selling for over 100 dollars. Good news is you can import any copy of the game and it'll be in full English depending on your system language settings.

Also don't forget that Gravity Rush 2 modding is happening now. The models have been exported, all the sound files ripped and now you can change kat's models. You can play as Permet, Unica, and you could already play as Raven but it's getting better all the time.

The DLC for GR2 is all still free, and the PS4 version of GR1 has the previous DLC from the Vita original built in. You can still get Ark of Time or whatever it's called, and the Nier Automata and PSO2 costumes and props. I'm talking the unlocks that were rewards for using the multiplayer aspects, which unlocked at certain amounts of Dusty Tokens acquired. Basically like finding a treasure chest, taking a photo, and then sending it to someone else to find, having a general photo rated by someone else, or beating another player's submitted time/score in particular challenges.

>Easily the best game on the PS4 and the best game of the generation is Gravity Rush 2, no question.

That's going a bit too far with it. It's easily an 8/10, but nowhere near one of the best games of the generation. Hell, if the generation were actually any good - it'd probably be even lower, like a 7/10 due to the wealth of competition. But this generation sucks ass so it stands out as a gem all the more.

It's competent with an interesting central mechanic, and fantastic visual and audio design. If it hooks you, it'll hook you hard. If it doesn't, well I don't think you'll hate the game - you'll just be confused as why people make such a big deal out of it. One of my favorite games of the generation, and one I think everyone should at least try once - but don't expect to go in and get blown away by it.

Kat and Raven being cuties is just icing on the cake.

>>16008585 is right that, if you don't "get" the gravity controls, the game feels frustrating since the entire point is having fun flying around. When I played it first on the Vita it was a chore and I dropped it around after Kat went through the World Pillar, something about the Vita gravity slide controls was really frustrating. Picked up 2 for the PS4 and it felt much better. Went back to 1 with a EU remaster copy for cheap and enjoyed it from start to finish (except the way Kat auto-floats when picking up objects, that's a minor annoyance they fixed for 2). If someone sticks with it it'll grow on them for sure, but it won't necessarily grab you immediately.

Yeah, there's still a good amount to pick from, both as normal acquisitions ingame or as free DLC, and you can switch between them at will so long as a particular outfit isn't "required" for the mission at hand, which isn't especially often. I usually just cruised around in GR2 with Kat in her work clothes once I got them back. But even for me, I'm still missing a costume since the White Shifter outfit was preorder only.

NA GR Remastered with an imported Asia GR2 worked fine with me with a NA PS4.

As for horror themes. It always creeped me out that towards the end of the second game since Jirga Para Lhao is teleported to Heckseville's world, what does the mainland in Lhao's world think happened to them? For an entire city to just disappear like that it would be very unnerving that the likely possibility the mainland would come too was that the city just fel/was swallowed into the abyss, which terrifies me.

Also was the reason Kat and Raven never ran into any creator types back in Lhao because they're in the mainland and Lisa really was telling the truth that the city was forgotten? Also I still don't know what the deal with Aki and Pandora is. Concept art suggests Pandora is a Nevi and Bit has talked to Aki so is Aki not human either?

>>16008262

I haven't been paying attention to any developments to the game since my PS4 is still on 5.50 waiting for homebrew to advance to that firmware and now I'm terribly excited for that to happen. Cool stuff, I hope that they manage to make durga and kali's models and Kat's promotional orchestral outfit playable too.

I don't recall ever seeing a mainland in Jirga Para Lhao's world, anymore than there's any other cities not connected to the World Pillar. If anything, other drifting communities that rely on JPL as a city for trade and survival would suddenly find it gone. I would hope that whatever it was that allows for dimensional travel, or broke the barrier, would allow JPL to come and go as needed with its own universe, with perhaps what we see in the game being a prolonged scoping out of each other at a first physical meeting.

Which is why I'd hope that as current leader of JPL, Lisa would also have it a be a priority to either send the city back after the initial issues of contact are worked out (like how to reliably send ambassadors back and forth), or tell the people of their dimension how to reach the new location/when she plans to be back. Would have actually made for an interesting plot points in a third game: Are the dimensions actually merged? Can Lisa go even go back? How much trouble would she and everyone get into given the time dilation effects if so? Can the rest of those in JPL's dimension cross over (both areas are capable of mining the same sites, so if the bulk of the remaining Lhaoians are mining communities, it probably wouldn't change much so long as they can find more stable rift entrances in Auldnoir's world)? Shame that's not likely to happen though, between modern Sony's dislike of their own Japanese branches games, standing lack of faith in Gravity Rush, and GR2 (in my opinion) feeling like it had an abridging of a third game's content included anyhow.

The Vita version was really just a proof of concept. I think it was originally going to be a PS3 game, but they shitcanned it and the Vita was where it ended up because meeting sales projections on that platform was much easier due to being a more enthusiast market and less competition from AAA shovelware. It was an experimental title, so that's the only place it really had to shine. Other than being a launchpad and the only platform that Gravity Rush could have gotten a start - the Vita version is pretty much redundant and gimped now. Once it caught on and was discovered as a gem in the rough, it got the buzz necessary to convince the higher-ups to make it and it's sequel for the PS4 - where it promptly died again because it wasn't nigger ball or cawdooty or a GTAV sharkcard.

>I think it was originally going to be a PS3 game

It was, GR was in development hell for a long time. I wonder if some day we'll see versions of it leak out for the PS3, I imagine there's a lot of interesting content in it. I don't think the Vita version is useless however, despite having better visuals and performance on PS4 the way the handheld screen rotates with you is a unique touch that really pulls you in to the game world, something that staring at a monitor or TV can't recreate.

GR2 was mishandled but I don't think it was ever going to be huge anyway. Someone really likes Toyama at Sony and keeps giving him resources to pull off some really impressive stunts. I really hope he's doing something brand new, not Siren, not Gravity Rush, and it sounds like he is.

>“2018 was a troubling year that was full of things I never thought about and things I don’t want to think about, however, in the middle of that during the Siren Exhibition I spoke with fans of 15 years,” he explained. “They gave me motivation to make games as well as some big hints. While things will still be behind-the-scenes, I want a fresh new start so that I can give it everything I have from the very start and go all out!”

Sony's Studio Japan really is one of the best and least celebrated teams in the industry. Pretty much all of their games are unsung works of excellence.

Knack is more of an outlier. I haven't played it myself, and don't have any interest in it - so I only know it from the meme. Still, they managed to take a completely generic and forgettable mascot character and turn it into a decent little and fun platformer - and make it a VR game on top of that. Shit, their "VR Worlds" free tech demo is still one of the best titles on PSVR.

If they could actually make it challenging, it'd be fantastic. Even after getting it's own stand-alone game, it still really is a proof of concept to try to push third party developers into making real games for the system that are capable of selling it as a platform, and not just teleport/object manipulation shovelware "experiences".

GR2 is a huge improvement over the first, but it's also more than twice the length if you include all the side content. It's too long for this sort of game, I was feeling pretty tired near the end of act 2. That said, the ending is phenomenal, so it's well worth pushing through.

A big problem for both games, for me anyway, were the segments where the very good art style gets pulled back for minimalism while some fuck reads philosophy to you. Gravity Rush 2 is buggy marxist propaganda. You have forced stealth missions, sidequests about uniting niggers with white women, and beyond retarded shit like that dog sniffing mission. The highlight of the game is the rare mission where you're searching for something. It lets you fly around with the fun gravity system and thoroughly explore the beautifully designed open world for hidden stuff. I've had more fun with the photo collection than I have with the story/side missions. I wish it had more collectibles and maybe one or two more areas. Also the combat is awful.

All in all the basic gameplay mechanic of flying around huge floating worlds is great, but they tried to hard to mix up the monotony instead of building on that fun flying feeling. I tried to finish a lot of the missions creatively but was railroaded into doing a very specific thing. There's rarely multiple ways of solving a mission, which is bizarre given the type of game this is. The combat is always a pain. I think a better direction would have been hiding more collectibles in the world and have them raise your health and gravity bar instead of leveling up after defeating scarabs. A great game with a lot of little things that drag it down from being near perfect.

In between main missions, check your menu for "Side missions", which unlock over time. You'll get the three costumes after you do their respective missions.

Watch out though, the missions mostly assume you've already completed the game so you'll get minor spoilers. They'll also assume you've got some skill at the game, so make sure you know at least all of Kat's basic abilities (gravity slide, pick up/throw, etc).

The gravity slide is when Kat slides along the ground really fast, I think on the Vita you have to press the touchscreen at both lower corners. If Kat just found her house it will get tutorial'd to you shortly afterwards. Alternatively you can do a Gravity Race challenge mission and just learn it on your own, pretty sure some of those require the slide even if it hasn't shown up story-wise yet.

Gravity Slide is done on a solid surface. You sound more like you're speak of the faster fall that consumes more energy in favor of speed. My experience with the game being the PS4 version though, I'm not entirely sure what controls are the same or different (I imagine anything mapped to L2/R2 would have to be different for Vita).

>So the 3 DLC, default and kat's casual clothes/pajama? Or is it something else?

You've got her Shifter default, Maid, Spy, and War outfits (from the DLCs), and then a school uniform from a required story mission. The previously DLC outfits are also carried over as save bonuses from GR1 to GR2, but only for the PS4 version of the former, while Shifter and School (renamed to "Shifter 1.0" and "School 1.0") were brought forward as dusty token rewards in GR2.

>>16022963

I wish the game could have been more challenging too, since it makes the combat much less fulfilling than it could have been. Even on hard difficulty with no upgrades or talismans equipped I managed to breeze through the main/side story and most challenge missions with no problem. It was only the in the Delvool trench that you feel the no-upgrades and non-optimal talismans really provide a fun challenge. Unfortunately I only got to level 35 in the Delvool trench before I accidentally overrode the save file without any backups. After my burnout period is over I'll try playing through the game again and see with I can beat all 50 levels without needing any upgrades/talismans.

The cake mission and the movie ones are good. I can even forgive the mission where you follow around worst dog Zoe for 20 minutes because at least it's novel. However, they make up maybe 20% of the side missions in the game. The rest are really boring; only demanding that you fly from A to B to C and then kill some enemies in order to get back a balloon or something like that.

>>16024827 may think otherwise, but I really enjoyed those puzzle segments and would have liked to see more missions where you have your gravity powers taken away in favour of some traditional puzzle platforming.

Less time-wasters, more interaction with the world would have made GR2 a 10/10 game for me.

I've played it via the PS3 version. About the only times I found the framerate to noticeably start to chug was when fighting the slime bosses, and that was on account of how many of the fuckers you can have bouncing around at once, combined with other effects. Any other time felt smooth. That said, given the mention of CEX, I take it you're PAL or something (never seen that name locally)? If so, I'd thought I'd heard the PAL PS2 release had most of the slowdown fixed before releasing there, though it wouldn't surprise me if some was still present at points.

>a pawnshop where normalfag shit is overpriced and the actual good games can be gotten for $30 or less, unless it's nintendo

I know what you mean, albeit as a similarity. There's a local multimedia chain that does stupid shit with their prices at times. Sometimes they ask two or three times as much as a game costs elsewhere here, sometimes they ask anywhere from half to a sixth, maybe even less, of average, and from when I've seen it happen, the latter affects more niche, hard to find games than anything super popular or common. I gotten a lot of good stuff like that without having to pay nearly market value that way. They had a cheaper-than-normal Valkyrie Profile PS1 lately, but not nearly cheap enough by my standards ($112 vs $150 average). Good PS4 and Vita pickings are more than a bit slim there though, as most of what they have is normalfag shit, and I doubt they've even had Gravity Rush: Remastered in their system. If not, I could see that going for either the same as the Vita one ($18), or be $60+ like anywhere else because they resorted to checking ebay.

Blame Sony for having so little faith in the series that they deemed to shitcan the online a mere year after the game came out, and only relented (for six months) when fans pointed out how stupidly short such a period of relevancy was.

Maybe someone on the team might have wanted to, but Sony themselves? Probably too much effort for them to clear, even if it should have been something minor. Or maybe it was deemed that it would devalue things for those that had put the time in (assuming upping the awarded tokens for the last six months it was up didn't already do that). But if being more serious, the issue is really having unlocks tied to multiplayer services being up/community being active. I mean, I get that it's incentive to use said features, but still.

All they had to do is up the spawn rates of the offline treasure chests and add the radar/beeping noise to them too and have the dusty tokens award BEFORE the online check. That way players could still earn the dusty token rewards offline without having to straight up give it to them. It would also encourage people to explore the world in between missions to hunt for the treasure chests. You're right though that is still too much effort for Sony to clear.

I wonder how difficult it would be to mod the game to do that. Though it would still suck that photo ratings/sharing and challenge missions would be unavailable. That I would image would be much more difficult than tinkering with spawn rates and online checks.

So is there a way to make gravity storms appear at the mining sites? I feel like getting them to appear is just dependent on dicking around and wasting time for long enough. There has to be an actual way to get them to appear. I want to dive deeper into the Delvool Trench Mine.

The ground melee starts out kinda useless and needs leveling, but it ends up being a quick way to wipe out mobs instead of gravity kick -> fly away -> gravity kick all day. Add in dodges and you can easily take out small fry, then use gravity kicks and specials on flying enemies and bigger foes.

2 is a big improvement in every way, thought I actually like GR1's physics a bit more.

The ending is extremely satisfying and combat is at least passable, bordering on good in some instances.
