1. Vidya is not dying, good or even great vidya pops up all the time, the problem is, you are comparing retrospectively all the vidya that has came up to this point that you know is good, to your knowledge about current good vidya coming out, and no shit one wouldn't match up to the other.
2. Successful B-AA studios have grown into AA-AAA ones, and the niche hasn't been filled yet, because before those studios were generally been brand backed and now it's only through starting from scratch (or getting crowdfunded) that such studio can be formed.
3. The only time indies were bad is somewhere between 2000-2010, before that it was MSDOS indie paradise, after that there appeared a market vacuum space (see point 2.) and robust engines have started popping up, UE3-4, Unity, CryEngine 2+, Ren'Py and the older ones have grown to maturity like Gamemaker, RpgMaker and all of those textadventure ones, except the latter ones probably just getting noticed due to the thing I'm talking about. No one cares about serious engine tho.

4. The problem is not the developers approach, it's the corporate economic based approach. Obviously, that would be ridiculously hard to change if not impossible, depending on ones political views, but, if you don't see the solution to that problem, do the task that is up to your size, like actually doing vidya research, playing said vidya and then publishing your findings to friends and communities you are a part of, instead of whining how fucking hopeless your situation is, you fucking mongoloid.

Saints Row 1 was a decent alternative to GTA with characters it was easy to like and grow attached to. it ended on a cliffhanger, that pretty much made getting SR2 mandatory just to figure out what the fuck happened. thankfully SR2 was actually an improvement in over the first game in all aspects, the series seemed like it would only keep getting better, but the reality and problems came with the fact that SR2 was actually a complete accident, Webm related so any concrete pan they could have had for the series seemed to have gone out the window.
With SR3 and onward, while everything from a gameplay perspective was improving, the series lost it's original identity, the was no footing in reality anymore things just kept getting more and more outlandish and it was impossible to actually be invested in the story anymore.

Every time I get a glimpse of any recent movie, music or live tv, they seem fucking godawful and literally painful to listen / watch, much worse than the ones from the time I quit these media. It was fun. I used to play in a guild called "thumper humpers" and we'd run around talking shit and thumping.
You'd log in during the morning and the chosen would have taken most of the world, and people would say something such as "looks like the night crew failed again".
It was a pretty original mmorpg in its gameplay flow and combat. You basically ran around areas of your level looking for a building to raid and to break that cycle there would be a massive server wide event like a chosen invasion that took the whole server to fend off and these portals to a different world full of crafting materials that you competed with other people to take first. Instanced events were a relatively minor part of the game but there, most of the time you'd be doing your "dungeons" in the fully open world and it worked so well you didn't feel like you and some random person were stepping on each other's toes.
I always liked how you could start mining somewhere and someone going about doing their thing would see you, walk over and say "hey bro can I thump with you?". And there would rarely be a reason to say no as the game actually encouraged teaming up with random players you met.
It was one of a handful of post-WoW mmos that was actually multiplayer. It even had mod support, although I didn't like some of the mods because they were kind of cheating. Stuff like "here's information you want fed to you on a golden plate, now you don't have to look for it yourself and get an inaccurate result"
The game concept worked so well and was so original, but for some reason the developer team just felt like they had to destroy it and turn it into generic garbage. The players were obviously discontent with their "need to revamp everything," but the developers kept on going.

The gameplay is still your standard affair from when you last played it, the dungeons are still the same since you last played it, the new missions they introduced before three rings went under in 2015 is still there.

It could be a fantasy/vanity castle like those one of the late Kings of Bavaria devised around the turn of the century. Built for aesthetic form, not function. Or it could be the administrative base of a larger territory than just the castle town at its base. Plus, you only see the narrow strip of houses on the bank, and a larger town could be on the opposite side.
