At the end of Ocarina of Time, Zelda sends Link back to the past to reclaim his lost childhood in being thrust into the future and bearing the responsibility of the fate of Hyrule. Yet, after abandoning the Master Sword, Navi, Link's proof that he belongs to the kokiri forest leaves him. He is then once again divorced from his childhood. He has no other family to fall back to. That's why in the beginning of Majora's Mask he's going through the lost woods in search of Navi. The Forest rejects him, and while he is lost he is desperate to find the key that let him in.
I believe, as others do, that Link never gave up on a search. He eventually became a Stalfos after being lost in the woods for so long, for years possibly. The regret the Ancient Hero feels in Twilight Princess is what I believe to be the regret that he wasted his time searching for the childhood he lost and didn't bear the responsibilities of adulthood again. He wanted to pass on his lessons to the next generation, clearly, yet he denied himself that chance. He thought he would regret not getting to finish his days running around and playing with friends, but what he truly regrets was not facing the issues he knew he was capable of handling and leaving the toys behind.

Honestly I think Link could return back to the Kokiri Forest any time. The barrier keeping non-Kokiri out was the Great Deku Tree. He died. Which means any monster once they find their way as proven in the future could enter the forest. That said Links before have have memorized their way around lost woods without a fairy. Not that Navi was much help guiding you in the first place.
Perhaps a more logical understanding is this: Link CHOSE to leave the Kokiri Forest because Link KNOWS he does not belong there. Once Link learned that he was a Hylian from the future and the Kokiri never growing up then staying in the forest only to grow old and die while your friends stay young and mourn doesn't make sense to him. Link knows the truth. His childhood could never be returned to him even with his youth restored. Whether or not Link returned to the Kokiri Forest before Majora's Mask is up to debate. If he has returned then Link says good-bye to all of his friends. Mido tells Link to keep the sword for Link's own protection now that the forest is safe again from the outside forever.
So why did Link wander the lost woods looking for Navi? Because he has nothing else better to do as a hero. Link could live depressed as a civilian working a layman's job. Or Link can explore the unknown searching for unexpected and endless adventure while looking for his true love.

The ending is left open for the future potential of creating a sequel. We will never know where he went. You can argue that he left (went to see Zelda) and is not going back to the woods, but it could just be a casual visit.
Considering in flashbacks talking to Zelda he gives him the ocarina of time to protect him in his quest searching for navi, I'd say that the way the story is done so there can be endless Zelda games where young link is "in search for navi" as an excuse for him to travel, and every spot he stops by and saves the day encapsulating a game per stop, like fillers which are sequels and continuations of his journey. Eventually he'd find navi culminating in a final arc, which explains why she left and thickens the plot.
This is the most likely scenario for the choice of the devs for the ending.

Spin offs don't count. That said if a fairy companion were to come back she has to be helpful with her own magic instead of being a guide for Link. I propose fairy magic could cost rupees to do miracles like create fire, water, or healing/shield via Zelda II spellbook once per day. Another topic for another thread really. For rendering the fairy if the camera is rendered far away then the fairy will be a ball of light or her skeleton will be a glowing body if dim. If the camera is zoomed in and the fairy is sitting on Link's head then you can see her light dim enough to get a clear view of the model in detail. I do want a fairy I can dress her up in cute and silly outfits for fun. A fairy companion can be fun to play with (or bully) too.

An even bigger problem with this theory is that Zelda ALREADY knew Ganondorf was evil and had explicitly told her father this already, but he didn't listen to her. "They go back in time and tell on Ganondorf and he gets executed" makes no damn sense. Not to mention, Link doesn't go back in time to before the game started, just back to when he pulled the sword.
The interpretation I always went with was this: Link pulled the sword, which left the portal to the Sacred Realm open. Ganondorf went through the portal into the Sacred Realm and nabbed the Triforce. By sending Link back in time and having him return the Master Sword, Link and Zelda effectively just shut the door to the Sacred Realm and locked Ganondorf on the other side; he STILL got the Triforce and became all-powerful, but he couldn't get out. Link remembers everything that happened in the future, and lets Zelda know that Ganondorf is no longer a problem. And, for the rest of her life, Zelda tells the story of the Seven Sages and the Hero sealing Ganon to anyone who will listen, even though it technically didn't happen anymore in this timeline.
Which explains how, in Zelda 3, Ganon is sealed in the sacred realm and has all three triforce pieces, and there's a legend about seven sages sealing him away which doesn't quite line up with the events of Ocarina (because Zelda heard the story second hand and didn't quite get all the details right).
And yes, Hyrule Historia probably has a different explanation, but everyone knows Hyrule Historia is complete bullshit.

The end of Skyward Sword was a bit on the nose that Zelda would have children with Link, (blood of the goddess), but that wasn't so obvious with Young Link. It's very likely he got cucked as well, despite being the most powerful force in Hyrule.
The more you think about the life of the Hero of Time, the more depressing it is. Any connections he made with people after leaving the forest were gone, aside from possibly Zelda. Saria was gone forever, unless he starts hearing voices in his head from the Temple of Light again. The forest rejected him after losing Navi as well. I'm sure all he ever wanted was to be happy and finally settle down.
But of course, he learned that there is joy in making others happy, as demonstrated by the Happy Mask Salesman.

He didn't listen to her, because all of her warnings were based purely on her dreams. When Link was sent back, he completely knew Ganondorf's plan. He had a ton of knowledge that he shouldn't have had. He knew that Ganondorf cursed the Great Deku Tree, filled the goron rock mine with dodongos, and stuck a parasite in Jabu-Jabu.

No, he didn't, for several reasons. One, Zelda had already flown the coop with Impa, before he pulled the sword, so there was no way he could meet Zelda in the courtyard, afterward. Two, adult Zelda kept the Ocarina of Time, that fleeing child Zelda threw to Link, with her in the future. If Link had only gone back to when he first pull the sword, child Zelda wouldn't have had a magical ocarina to give Link before he ventured into the Lost Woods and MM happened.
