The way I see it, Anime is currently where video gaming was 15 years ago in the public sphere. It's something that's sort-of popular with "the kids" i.e. people between the ages of 12 and 27. It's not something that's "normal" or "acceptable" in social spheres just yet but is beginning to push out of its confort zone. Of course there have been people who watch anime for years and years beforehand (as was pointed out in the mention of the late 90s/early 2000s) but I would place those people in the video game equivalent bracket of the people who played video games in the mid-late 80s. These people were involved when it was actively discouraged and looked down upon to participate in such an activity. Anime is popular enough for the average joe on the street to know of its existence (Japanese cartoons) and lucrative enough that companies are now currently producing much lower quality products than they used to because they know a vast market could be out there if they go for more mass appeal. In video games this brought about a rapidly increasing influx of people who had nothing to do with the hobby. Shitty memes being thrown around by facebook teenagers is a nice red flag for a stepping stone to the next stage of the dumpster fire. Flash forward to today and video games are completely sanitized mass appeal fad garbage used to suck money out of idiots. Should Anime break through to the point where it's not only normal but "cool" to watch like how video games became "cool" to play around 10 years ago then it will get much much worse before it gets better - kind of like video games! You can't ever know with absolute certainty but with the content being churned out right now you may in fact see anime become yet ever further removed from what you know. You could wake up one day and see news networks talking about new seasons of anime like they do Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, or The Walking Dead. News pundits and aging gen Xer talking head on television discussing ratings and topics such as "best slice of life"; it will be the entire antithesis of its origins. Either way, Japan is showing signs of "giving inches" to please detractors and "losing miles" in the process so whose to say where it's going to go.

If I wouldn't even try to guess ahead of the curve but rather look at the past 20 years and see what cultural phenomena is still limping on despite all the odds and then figure whether or not a revival of interest may happen. >dont use windows after 7. never pay.
