I can't speak for the rest of the series, but I really enjoyed the first game. Muh good graphics was just a bonus. It's a shame the later games turned into a shitty linear CoD clone with space aliens.

Crysis was "optimized" by Nvidia. At the time, ATI/AMD really sucked at doing high geometry, as well as tessellation. Nvidia provided Crytek with funds and help "optimizing" the game, as well as technical support with adding new features like tessellation to CryEngine.
The end result was large amounts of tessellation in places where it didn't matter, with the effect of making AMD/ATI cards look far worse (because they couldn't handle the ridiculous amounts of tessellation as well as Nvidia could). Crysis went on to be a defacto benchmark for graphics cards, one where Nvidia basically wrote the rules. Sure, that tessellation made the game run worse on both cards, but it made it run far worse on AMD hardware.
The goal was to make AMD and ATI look noncompetitive and well behind Nvidia when one of the games with the greatest graphics at the time ran far worse on AMD hardware than Nvidia. The goal was, more or less, to get review sites to come to conclusions like

I am pretty sure if it weren't for Crysis and Nvidia doing what they could to make it look like ATI was a disappointment by sabotaging video games, the 2000 series as well as 3000 series. Crysis even went on to haunt ATI until 4000 series and beyond, as you can go back and look at reviews where ATI was well behind GTX 280 in Crysis yet beat it in most other games.

As crazy as it sounds, that's how it works. They add new hero characters and ships but you can't play as them until you unlock them via the in-game credits but that's not all: you have to hope to get enough points during a game to be able to select these heroes so there's also a 99% chance that you will never play these characters long enough to level them up and unlock their dedicated Star Cards shit.
Even the recent skins for the Clone Troopers are behind a pay wall.
