Hard mode: Not the history of the country where the game was made
While most of Nioh's story is only very loosely based on history, the bit after the prologue about the ships being named Hope, Faith, Loyalty, and Gospel all failing to make the journey while only Love remains IS historically accurate. I thought it really setup the story really well.
Gladiator Begins has a lot of fun with its setting. You can select what province (or non-Roman area since your character is a slave) your character is from and you actually get bonus points (since they're based on crowd approval) for playing to sterotypes with your playstyle.

In terms of structure, not that loosely. The battles and locations really did exist, the alliances and motives of the different warlords also match up. It's just that every battle happens to be mostly via demon. Nioh also portrayed Ishida pretty damn fairly compared to most stories in this setting. Make all enemies humans and it's the end of the sengoku era for you.

The weirdest thing is how they hired a VA from Belfast to do a Dublin accent.
He does the accent well, but people in Belfast (and to a lesser extent, the rest of Northern Ireland) have a very different accent to the rest of the country. It's like hiring New Yorker to voice act a Texan.

I'd really, REALLY, fucking love a European Nioh. Action RPG set during some conflict in Europe with all the magic and monsters Nioh had. Watching the Last Kingdom made me think Danish invasion of England would be a good way to do it. You have the Viking and knight contrast, Christian and Nordic paganism for mythology and magic, a good history to tell a story from, Britons in Cornwall were doing other paganism, Scots and Irish too. Only thing that would be lacking would be the weapons, as Nioh is set much later in time so has more weaponry.

Its not really a JRPG though. It was simply cashing in on the Souls popularity except Nioh was a far better game than anything Miyahacki made. Although, the enemy variety, level design and lore fell short of those games, the actual gameplay was leaps and bounds above.

Also, I can vouch for this. I live in northern Antrim, near the north-eastern coast of Northern Ireland, and we sound like a mix of an Irish & Scottish accent up here (generally speaking, with regional variations of course). We share quite a lot of slang and colloquialisms with Scots as well.
William's voice actor did do a good job though, I was surprised to learn that he was from Belfast.

Pic related slipped my mind earlier. Pretty much every prominent character in its story (and some side missions) is a real historical figure from the Meiji period, there's a wide variety of contemporary western & Japanese guns to choose from, etc. A lot of the music uses traditional Japanese instrumentation as a result of the setting as well which was also cool.

I think it's less that and more that Japan seems to have a weird (for lack of a better term) affinity with Irish culture, game devs especially. Some examples off the top of my head (apart from Nioh) are The Best Is Yet To Come from MGS being sung in Irish, the Dullahan appearing in DMC3 as an enemy, Cú Chulainn's spear appearing in a bunch of SMT and Final Fantasy games, a lot of Folklore, the Claiomh Solais appearing in some Castlevania games, etc. I believe the current Empress of Japan also speaks Irish and one of her daughters also studied in Dublin for a while.
Could be that they just see us as exotic or something since we're pretty much on the other side of the world from them.

Sengoku Rance lets you glean into the history of the warring states period, making you meet all sorts of historical characters whose look and personality are pictured with great care, using all the historical records at our disposal. It truly is the ultimate history game.
Now, some of you might argue it's a strategy game, but it's actually also a JRPG and a VN, so fuck you.
