Played the first two games, and honestly they were kinda of average, I don't know why they are so well remembered, but maybe it has something to do with the date they were released and how many P&C games existed up until that point.

I might as well mention my favorite series and that is Quest for Glory 1-4(5 is shit), it's a hybrid between and RPG and a Point and Click, you pick your class, your stats, you have to train them, kinda like in Elder Scrolls, every day you do to the in to eat and sleep(there is a day and night cycle), and depending on your class and stats you can solve puzzles in different ways, so for instance there is a shinning object in a bird's next, you can climb the tree and get the object(thief), you can throw a rock and knock the nest down(fighter) or you can cast telekinesis and bring the nest to you(wizard). The interface is the classic Sierra one(with the talk, see, touch, and so on). They also have a combat system and two's is actually quite good and has some depth to it, and the best part is that your stats and spells carry over, so if in the first game your max strength is 100, by the fifth one you would have 500 strength.

My favorite games in the series are 2(remake) and 4, but you should definitely play them in order, there is a remake for the first one, and a fan one for the second one.

I will admit that I liked the fact that they not only continued the story but also gave closure to some of them such as the hippy and his tree gf from 2, and you can marry the girls you had met in the previous games, but that's about it, the interface was shit, the voice acting didn't hold a candle to IV's superb acting, the setting just didn't work. I understand that some of the greatest and strongest heroes are from ancient greece and this was the final power creep, but going from germany to arabia to africa to romania and then to greece, just doesn't work, plus starting the story with a tournament arc was even worse. I couldn't finish it and probably never will.

My nibba. First RPG (kind of) that I've ever played and most of the jokes flew over my 10 year old head (replaying 4 now is a fucking riot). You forgot to mention that you solve puzzles specific to you class but you always need a to do a fuckton of lateral thinking to beat the big bosses. It's never about stat grinding but outsmarting beings that are always leagues above you in terms of skill.

Love the games to death, especially because of how charming they are - no hidden agenda, no politial posturing, no fucking "trope" box to fill.

Just a set of classical fairy tales, a likeable protagonist, decisions that carry more weight than all of Mass Effect 3, a plethora of delicious waifus (still waiting for the mod to marry Gnome Ann) with 4 marriable ones (Katrina best gril) and a script that simply cannot be replicated today (seriously, go play 4 and tell me if there's any fucking writer our there that can pull off the tavern dialogue).

I would kill for a remake of QFG 5 with VGA and hand drawn graphics instead of what we got.

Finally, there's a number of games inspired by the Coles:

Heronie's quest

http://crystalshard.net/?g=16

Literally Quest for Glory 6 - no other way around it. Play it and love it. It's even free for fuck's sake.

Quest for Infamy

http://www.infamous-quests.com/home/games/quest-for-infamy/

A hit and miss, you can see way too many elements of modern game design in it and it tries to be edgy for the sake of it. Great musk though.

Hero-U - rogue to redemption

http://hero-u.com/

Made by the Coles as their comeback title. Fully crowdfunded and it shows. The combat is hit or miss, the dialogue's ok but - for a game made in fucking 2018 - it's surprisingly light hearted (you can chose to be an asshole) but there's no pretension of this story about to blow your mind now a hint of deep plots. Just train your skills, go on adventures and get the girl.

Mage's initiation - reign of the elements

(never ever)

Maybe elsewhere in the industry, but Sierra was staffed full of women. Lori Cole, Jane Jensen, Christy Marx being headliners aside from Roberta - but their general staff, programmers, artists, QA, etc also quite a lot of women employed. And it's not because they were overtly progressive for the time, but it was a necessity. Oakhurst was a small town compared to where most tech companies HQ'd, so they didn't have a huge talent pool to select from and being out in the boonies didn't exactly draw the best talent. So their employees tended to take their work home with them, taught their spouses how to code or create art assets, etc - and brought them on to work. At the time, I think they were the largest or second largest employer in the town. It was a family centric company and close knit community.

So… legit question. Why aren't there more VNs that incorporate P&C Adventure mechanics? The two genres seem like they would be a perfect fit for some cross pollination. I'm not saying go full retard designer logic like putting scotch tape on a hole in a fence, use cucumber on cat, collect cathair from tape, use cathair to make fake mustache to fool anime girl into thinking you're someone else so she'll have sex with you. I'm not advocating the mechanics really get in the way of people's waifu fapping. VNs aren't games, and nobody benefits from pretending they are. I just think it could add a bit of context and could be another avenue by which to unlock scenarios/endings.

But now that I think about it… an anime Leisure Suit Larry type game with uncensored h-scenes could be decent as well if you just went the full adventure game route.

A point-and-click VN would imply more CG background arts for example, and a proper script to allow more interactivity and travel freedom (instead of being on a rail with eventually a bunch of levers that send you to different routes)

I also suspect game development costs have also inflated in Japan, more or less in the same fashion it was in the West, and the otaku are just content with mediocrity thus discouraging that kind of ambitious project

Yeah, but because they are so cheap to produce - the market is absolutely flooded with them. You'd think just putting in a LITTLE bit more effort would be worth it to make your game a bit more visible and unique in the market.

>and the otaku are just content with mediocrity

I think this is the strongest factor. You can feed an otaku shit all day long, and they'll eat it up… but if you imply their waifu is impure - they will rise up and burn your fucking house down.

There are some modern VNs that introduce actual gameplay parts like Utawarerumono, Net High, Eiyuu Senki, Evenicle, etc but yeah they're quite rare.

If possible, you should try Death Mark. Its a recent example (and first one in a while) of a point-and-click VN as you actually get to interact with the environments searching for clues. There is also its spiritual sequel "NG" which is Vita/moonrunes-only for now. Both were developed by Experience which is a dev group quite known for dungeon crawling games.

Has anyone played Kara no Shojo? Is there some actual detective work needed or is it just fluff to make it stand out and look like it has gameplay aside from choices?

Broken Sword is awesome and was really a high point in the genre. Discworld Noir was neat but was so fucking buggy and weird that it reminded me of Blade Runner in that the world and design was clearly top-tier but the amount of fucky shit that could happen was all over the place leading to lots of accidental what the fuck moments

Unlike Ace Attorney, you can fail the investigations and miss some critical clue. Only that you'll realize it hours later and now you're locked into a bad ending. It's mainly a VN though.

you need it for policenauts especially because it's a hybrid adventure and light gun game, the shoot out scenes are really hard using a controller

t.played it on PSP

That's way better than I thought it would be. I'll definitely be checking it out now. Refusing to punish the player for fucking up like that just makes the interaction seem pointless to me.
