FUCK GAMING HEADSETS
Alright /v/, I'm done with garbage gaming headsets. I'm looking for a proper headset that I can use for vidya as well as other stuff like music. I'm looking at getting something that's good at positional audio and is comfy for that sweet sweet porn. I've been recommended either the Sennheiser HD 6XX or the AKG K7xx, but I've not much clue when it comes to audio stuff.
What are you niggers using?

I'm using the Denon AH-D1100. Among the best choices for budget 'high-end' tier headphones. You can run them without a dac/amp, but even a cheap <$100 one would make a massive difference.
Just make sure to never gaymen headphones or anything that tries to sell itself on the 5.1 and 7.1 meme. Stereo headphones are the only good headphones. Positional audio has to do with how the game itself handles audio, not some shitty worthless 7.1 meme.
Do not buy AKG headphones without a dac/amp, they won't sound good enough. A good cheap but solid choice is the Fiio E10K.
If your budget is >$200, the Sennheiser HD 598 are also a good choice, but once again, grab a dac/amp too.

>that's good at positional audio
Audio Technica ATH-AD700X / 900X, but that shit has no bass, hard to beat for positional audio and gaming in general though.
If you're extra poor or want a cheap replacement / backup get yourself a superlux 668b, it's not much but for gayming you're not getting anything significantly better unless you're willing to spend a lot more than 30-50 bucks, you want velour pads they're not optional if you want that pair of headphones on your head for several hours.
If you're willing to a bit higher but not in the 300 range there's stuff like the HD-579 and SHP-9500 which aren't bad
Planar are supposedly real good at what you would want so maybe take a look at the Monolith M1060, but that needs an amp.
If money is no object go Stax and mod them with non shit pads or Elear, Audeze are good but just about the least comfortable headphones I've put on my head so fuck spending a thousand bucks on that, obviously you want an amp there, it's even required for Stax because they're electrostatic headphones.
Now the only problem is that all those need a somewhat quiet environment to be good, but then the problem becomes that if you want isolation you're gonna lose good positional audio unless you spend a lot of money, I've hear the Audio-Technica ATH-A990Z is good though if you need closed headphones which sounds close to open ones.
> I've been recommended either the Sennheiser HD 6XX or the AKG K7xx
K7XX is shit, if you want bass like that just get the Fidelio X2 especially if you can find one for a decent price (160-250 bucks)

Really comfy, even with glasses and hours of wearing. Sound Quality is very Clean, and you can drive them as low as 30 Hz. Great amount of bass around 70 Hz. Also, no distortion at any Frequency. If something breaks, you can disassemble it and buy a replacement from the Manufacturer. Easy to disassemble as well. Plus it doesn't look gay like any GayMing® Product that targets little Kids with shitty LEDS on it.
>>15846096
You don't really need Amp. Of course an Amp would change the sound quality, but i didn't tried it and i don't know how it would sound afterwards, because the onboard sound chip (Realtek ALC892) is good enough to drive it on it's own.

Very wide sound stage (aka there's more difference between two things that sound liek they're a a different distance from you) and very good imaging (aka you can tell the direction from which sounds are coming easier), highlights the right range of sounds for competitive FPS (aka footsteps are louder)
That makes them good for competitive gaming, they don't actually sound all that great for other uses because nobass.
>Is the sound good?
Should sound like and HD600 with more bass, and the HD600 sounds good for pretty much everything outside of very bass heavy stuff
Also keep in mind that if you've never actually used any good headphones even something relatively cheap will sound really good to you, aka don't become an MDRv6 shill.

Every good headphone is good for gaming. Another good budget pair of headphones are the DTX 910. I'll show you why bellow.
What you want in headphones is to have a balanced sound spectrum, or else it sounds like shit.
Take a look at pic related. The sound spectrum / frequency response of the "gaming" Kraken is as you can see absolutely fucked.
The more balanced it is, the better. Take a look at the frequency response of the DTX-910. As you can see, with the exception of the sub bass which is recessed, everything else is well balanced, making it ultimately a neutral sounding headphone. It blows the fuck out any gaymen or ps4 gold headsets.

Well, yes. You want headphones with a good range. If you don't buy gayming shit, after the price of $50 you can get headphones with good range, you don't really need very expensive headphones for playing games if you don't care about build quality (both robustness and luxury). Obviously comfort is very important, I don't recommend buying headphones that don't have cloth ear pads. Do not buy shit with leather pads, it makes wearing headphones in the summer ten times worse. If you're ordering them online, you just have to take a chance and hope they're comfy, but if you can go to a store and try them out that's what I recommend.

>Every good headphone is good for gaming
Depends on what the exact definition is but yes for the most part.
>What you want in headphones is to have a balanced sound spectrum, or else it sounds like shit.
Not relevant for gaming, if I'm going competitive I don't give a shit that my sound is neutral I do give a shit that explosions don't drown half the other sounds because the devs can't into audio balance and that the sounds I really want to hear are overemphasized even if that detracts from the audiophile experience.
Conversely if I'm just playing casually I give a shit about feeling the explosions like I'm actually there (aka loads of bass and subass which you won't find in 90% of good headphones)
And also specifically for older console and especially emulation most higher end headphones make the music sound worse / outright disagreeable.
And finally some higher end headphones seem to think that making your head / earlobes hurt after a couple hours is a good thing which it isn't for vidya.
tl;dr there's a reason why you consider an ATH-AD700X / 900X / Fidelio X2 for vidya but not for listening to music

Any pair of headphones around the $100-150 price range from Sony, AKG, Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, or Beyerdynamics will blow away any "gaming headsets". Add a $10 clip on mic for audio, and you're done. $50 for a modmic if you're really paranoid about getting the mic positioned perfectly for better voice quality.
If you absolutely must have headphones and a mic integrated into one package, Sennheiser and Audio-Technica are the only two companies that make quality gaming marketed headsets, but you're still going to be overpaying compared to separate headphones and a mic.

Lets talk about headsets, in other words a head mounted microphone and speaker. By that I mean OP is a colossal retard (>>15846340)
Out in the real world, headsets are used for communications while doing something else. Whether it's answering phones, flying a plane or driving a truck, your hands are full and you need to communicate. As such headsets are designed for two main functions: long term wearing and intelligibility of the other party.
The first part of that is great, anyone who has used a set of circumaural David Clarke's will attest. The problem is the second part of that. Communications really only cares about intelligibility of the other party, as such the speakers and mic are tuned no where near a wide response; so music and games will sound like shit, but it will be really easy to understand people calling you a faggot over all the other noise which is the intention.
Really only gaming uses headsets for both general listening and communications so you're really stuck with the retarded plastic shit you see at gamestop. Best advice is right here >>15846278 for decent quality shit.

Logitech G933, audio quality is great, surround-sound is excellent(plus it's all highly configurable), microphone is headset-tier, not excellent but turns on or off automatically when you flip it past a certain point in addition to a manual off-switch on the left earpiece, surround-sound can be triggered by it's own button plus there's a mute button and one button left for you to configure on your own.
Plus, the USB power cord is like 8 feet long, I've swear I can go take a shit with the head-set on without even unplugging the cable(my shitter-room is right next to my desk, though).
Cons: the loudness wheel is gets worn out after a while(I've had this thing like 3 years now) and will confuse reducing sound for upping it and the other way around.
You'll have your head connected directly into the wall socket. No, I mean it, you will. Max battery with all the lights and shit turned off is like 8 hours, cut to 7 if you're also talking constantly and using surround sound simultaneously and your PC simply will not recognize the USB power cable while the headset is turned on.
Basically, if you try to plug it in while the headset is on your PC will unplug the power cable then demand you update your Logitech Sweet(which you're going to need to configure all your shit) drivers except since the power cable is unplugged the installation just crashes and stays there.
It's doubly fucked because you need your headset to be on AND the USB to be plugged in to install the sweet and update drivers. Apparently there's some fix around this someone found online but I could never be bothered.
Just do that when you get it since it will usually run perfectly within the first year or so of getting it and the USB cable problem will appear(it's Logijank, it's temperamental and it starts having problems after a while).
It's also very durable. I've had this shit fly across the room several times and hit all sorts of shit and velocities that would obliterate your average phone but they're mostly fine. Main thing is the little Logitech logo on one of the side panels keeps falling out when I pull it out to plug in the USB driver.
That's the only other con, the USB driver is - since it's primarily a wireless headset - your way of communicating with your PC and it needs to be jacked in at all times to use the headset. The up side to this is you can just slot it in and pull it out without having to "eject safely" and you don't really risk any damage to it.
So that's it, basically. It's janky but it's pretty good and it's comfortable even for VERY LONG wear. Also the insides of the ear-pieces are actually shaped to contain the actual human ear so that's nice. I never understood why headsets are either round or oval when that never actually conforms to anyone's ear and almost always cause pain after a few hours of wear - even to people like me who don't have ginormous ears.
I will say one thing though, it's called the "Artemis Spectrum" and yes, since it's a "serious gayming headest" it's the exact same Spectrum we're both thinking of.

I'm using Audio Technica ATH-M30s. I think they were on an old /mu/ infographic, probably go for the newer model (M30x), since it's cheaper now.
Unfortunately it was rather quiet plugged directly into my motherboard, so I also got a dedicated sound card. The Asus Xonar DGX, it's about $40 and does everything I need it to. It also has a configuration panel, which is neat.

In-ears are the best at sound isolation. All that other stuff seems to be to secure them to your head plus a microphone. You don't want to pull out the in ears by accident while piloting and then have to fiddle around and put them back in.

Another headphone that really rocks is the Sony WH-1000XM3. I normally don't recommend gimmicky headphones with features like Bluetooth or Noise Cancelling but these work really well. Normally these extra features come with the price of audio quality being shit, but I tested those and they sound very fine. The noise cancellation is top notch, even without music playing it greatly reduces everything else around you.
That said, the build quality is as shit as it gets, which is typical for public headphones. I don't own a pair of those myself, a friend lend me his and I tested them for a week. I honestly really like them. But the thing is I already own a $600, and a $1000 pair of headphone, which makes spending another 350+ a pain in the ass.

This baby right here. It can power just about anything you throw at it, and it's a pretty decent DAC.

4247b4 No.15846871
I have a pair of M40x with BrainWavz memory foam pads on them cause the stock pads are garbage. Also if you are looking for the best solution for headphone surround sound I'd definitely recommend Sennheiser's GSX 1000 DAC/AMP. I used to think surround sound headphone audio was a stupid gimmick but these taught me otherwise, if the game has a decently mixed surround sound option this thing sounds amazing. Also it's going to sound miles better than your motherboards DAC, it can't power really voltage hungry headphones though so don't expect to plug in some really beefy cans to it unless you plug in a seperate amp.

>Also tried a few amplifiers and I can tell you one thing. They make barely a difference.
My understanding is that amps are only needed if you have high-end headphones. Higher end tends to have higher impedance, so they need more juice and that's where the amp comes in. If you have $100 headphones you're way better off spending a few bucks more getting a better model than adding an amp you don't need. If you reach $200 on the headphones you should consider adding an amp, and if you're spending even more odds are you'll want an amp.

Consider V-Moda Boompro instead. Modmics are overpriced and not that great. Boompro only works on phones with a detachable cable though (which you should be getting 100% of the time anyway). There's also chink clones of the Boompro too, they're like 10€ on Aliexpress.
