But I'm more curious as to what you anons have been playing this year? I've been playing The Vagrant, Bloodstained Curse of the Moon, Hellbreaker, The Messenger, La Mulana 2, Super Daryl Deluxe and Exapunks and with the exception of La Mulana 2 and The Messenger I really liked all of them. The Messenger I felt was a great game up until it shifted into a pseudo metroidvania then I couldn't stand it until it introduced new levels, then it went back to being good.
La Mulana 2 I just felt it was inferior to the first game. A lot of the puzzles are too straightforward to be any challenge and a lot of the time I found it resorting to a "ha-ha here's an instant kill trap do it again" pitfall even moreso than the original game, so I didn't get far before forgetting about it.
There had been four games I wanted to play but couldn't, Copy Kitty, Guacamelee 2, Vigilantes and Override Mech City. The first two simply would never stop crashing on startup and I have no idea why I do, it's because my PC is a decade old but still, why these two games in particular I have no clue.. Vigilantes I had no idea if it's good or not and I hadn't gotten around to checking it out, and Override Mech City because it's mostly a multiplayer game and the singleplayer element I heard was unsatisfactory.

My impressions is a mix of GTA style world, actual RPG branching quests with alternative paths NV style but with that trashy as fuck Gas Effect dialogue. And I do at least have faith we will get interesting side content. Side quests are a very strong aspect of the vicher tri.

There is a legitimate discussion to be had about disregarding devil daggers, it's basically the right type of game play but the wrong type of design for this point in the industry. A hyper-minimalist arcade style game that can last just a few minutes is ultimately a very different itch to scratch than a proper, sprawling game with deliberate use of enemies and combinations of enemies juxtaposed against a variety of level designs that bring about unique and interesting game play. There's nothing wrong with the type of game it is but there's legitimate fatigue about the pick up, play, and drop after 30 minutes style of game it is considering how prevalent they've become.

If anything I'm more exhausted by the fact that all upcoming first-person shooters (which aren't genre hybrid abominations/battle royale/narrative-focused/open world/puzzle games) are Doom clones (or clones of Doom clones like Quake/Duke/Blood). You get stuff like Dusk, Ion Maiden, Amid Evil, Prodeus, Overload, the Descent reboot, Project Warlock, and some other lesser known first-person shooters which have all one thing in common, which is that they're Doom clones, again. I don't have anything against Doom clones, in fact I still do like them, but when the future catalogue of FPS games consists of nothing but Doom clones then I get the impression that the potential of the genre hasn't been even tapped yet. We still haven't seen a good boss fight in an FPS for starters.
I want to see something really new school for action-focused FPS games, and Devil Daggers showed some promise there, but it was just too small and too niche in its appeal to really instigate a revolution of sorts. nuDoom actually showed the most promise towards this new-school of FPS design, which incidentally nobody, not even the biggest nuDoom cocksuckers and not even Bethesda themselves even realized. Instead it's getting unfairly detracted for deviating for Doom clone standards (partially justified for having DOOM in its title) through stuff like small enemy counts, arenas, and what have you, when the problem with nuDoom lies more with the execution of those deviant ideas rather than the ideas themselves. I honestly wish people would stop using "muh arena level design" as a criticism as if it's an inherently flawed idea rather than an entirely different approach with its own pros and cons, and instead beguile the game for the flawed execution of said ideas amongst many other things (see pic related).
Nobody even noticed how nuDoom had the least worst boss fights in the entire genre, because the casuals and journos were praising it for all the wrong reasons, while /v/ and whatever others Doom puritans were criticizing it for partially wrong reasons, so nobody even realized the potential of an approach to first-person shooters like nuDoom had.
