I've been playing Planescape Torment and I really love it so far. However I kind of got stuck/not quite sure if I'm doing the right thing, don't wanna look up walkthroughs in case of spoilers/cheating.

I managed to get all the way to the Buried Village, I haven't really done any sidequests so I'm only at level 3, when I go into the catacombs I get absolutely fucked even though I was doing pretty well against thugs and other enemies.

Should I get out of the catacombs and do some sidequests? Or is dying a lot part of the game itself? As far as I understand it there's not really any downside to dying and respawning.

Also is the spiritual successor to Planescape any good? I haven't heard much from it

Not really no. Just do quests and don't fuck them up. Beating up thugs also helps with leveling.

IIRC you're right about dying not really being detrimental, but I don't remember dying a lot when I played Planescape: Torment so you're probably underleveled or something. I'd advise doing some sidequests before trying to progress any further. Probably best to explore all the content and really savor it, in any case.
