Just started playing Half Genie Hero and it's very linear. Does it open up later?
I also noticed there's a cross-promotion with Blaster Master Zero which is cool, I guess, but it seems out of place.
I also really dug the lyrics in the opening stage. And the humour and tits are on point.
I also really miss the hand-drawn art. The 3D models are OK, and I'm sure from a production stand-point they're much easier to produce, but 2D games need 2D art.

It's by far the most linear of the Shantae games, but this is just blatantly untrue. It still features the same kind of Metroidvania-style backtracking as Pirate's Curse; you'll have to return to earlier levels to find things once your abilities allow you to do so. It just fundamentally feels a lot more linear due to the stage structure, it being a level select rather than an open world.

Half-Genie Hero came halfway to doing this, but sadly dropped the ball a bit with the recycled levels. Risky Mode does indeed give us the kind of playable Risky we all wanted (where she plays basically as Shantae did in Pirate's Curse), and a bathtub-based level select.
And Friends To The End IS basically Castlevania 3 style Rotty, Bolo and Skye, each of whom have their own distinct abilities (Skye can glide, throw birds a la Maria, and create platforms; Bolo can smash rocks and grapple-swing like CV4 Simon, and Rotty can throw her head, bash enemies with her leg, and eat brains to regain health.)
But sadly, both modes reuse the exact same levels and bosses as the main game up until the very end. But at least they did rewrite the story for all of them, and the strained justifications for why you're fighting the same bosses again (and particularly, for why Risky has to infiltrate her own fortress and beat up her own minions) are funny. At least the gameplay and story changes make for a fun replay, though.
The Mighty Switch Force and Jammies Mode were probably the best alternate gameplay modes, though.

The first game on Gameboy Color is a brilliant game and a technical marvel for the system. Shantae Pirate's Curse are great game and really show's how much potential way forward had as a studio. The Risky's Revenge starts out strong but is an unfinished mess where the second half is a rush job without dungeons. Half-genie hero is a lazy cash in where they blew the budget on new HD sprites. Half-genie is so unsatisfying that it made me lose all respect for the publisher.

There is nothing wrong with the animal transformations in the original game. The problem with them is how they made the transformations easier. As for the Pirate gear, they should fallow the Mega Man X4 model, where you have A different mode to play as Risky with different puzzles and different maps. Half-Genie Hero sucks precisely because the map design was garbage and it was too short a game with an unbalanced difficulty chaotic curve. That is likely because they wasted all their time on making the game assets but didn't spend any time on level design. Risky Revenge was a good game until they decided to leave it unfinished. It needed more Zelda style dugeons. More then half the time Wayforward doesn't know how to finish a game properly. Way Forward need to stop trying to reinvent the wheel and just follow thru until it's completed.

I remember last thread we were talking about a 3D Shantae game. I think one of the things we came up with is that the game is a platformer first. Dodging/dashing is kinda like jumping laterally do there would be a heavy emphasis on "rhythm". Rhythm is the pattern enemies use to surround and attack you. Which means combat in the game is more like dancing. There won't be a lock on because your magic spells will cover blind spots. You can whip or sweep your hair, which has advantages and disadvantages with power (knock back), damage, and lag. And transformations will be few but will cover mobility and puzzle solving options. Pretty much Shantae with a Mario 64 template but 3D Metroid level design.

Rhythm had nothing to do with the music itself. It's about reading your enemy movements and reacting accordingly. It's also about knowing how far you need to leap and not leap too far or short to get hit. Rhythm as a concept is having full control over your movement and momentum having the skill to manipulate it. Mastering your movement and momentum makes it feel like a dance.
I still imagine the game to use four face buttons: Attack, Dash, Jump, and Cast Magic.
I'll expand dashing. Dashing is jumping laterally that you control by how long you hold or release the button you're facing. Dashing also has lag when you stop. So no spamming dash to move faster than running. It'll be slightly slower. What dashing is suppose to be is a burst of speed to get out of the way. You can't jump mid-dash because your feet are off the ground (it's a lateral jump). You can jump post dash after landing. Then with the right upgrade you can "tumble" by pressing dash mid-air in the direction you hold the control stick as an aerial dodge for faster lateral momentum. You roll until you land but a useful way of crossing longer jumps.
You can pick up things like pots with the attack button and throw them, probably after crouching first. I imagine you can upgrade your hair to work like a lasso and pull small items and levers towards you. Casting magic/using an item is selecting it from a shortcut or subscreen and pressing the button. You crouch with a right trigger (ZR/R2 for Switch and PS4) and center camera with left trigger. bumpers (L/R for Switch and L1/R1 for PS4) can be used to cycle items or start transformation dance or rotate camera depending on settings. D-pad is mini map and menu shortcuts. Right clickie is first person perspective as right stick is camera control. Not sure what to do with left clickie yet. This is as far as I thought through.

What really soured me on it was the part where you need to climb the mountain using the spider transformation. I ran around forever until I found the dungeon with the spider transformation, but it never occurred to me to use it to climb the mountain because 1) it was almost possible with the monkey transformation with precise jumps and 2) the spider climbed on spider web backdrops in the dungeon, which somehow meant it could climb on a rocky backdrops near the mountain.
Uncle Mimic also tells you to approach from a specific side, which is ambiguous because Sequin Land is a circle and I thought he meant the side of the mountain as he would have seen it looking out his window. Turns out he meant it from the perspective of whomever drew the map.
I had a LOT of fun with the minigames and dungeons, and the soundtrack is a true work of art, but the act of "exploring" the overworld was too tedious for me. Obviously the game is quite old and I can't blame it for not having modern conveniences, but I just didn't feel like drawing out a map myself.
