I used to love JRPG, but the genre isn't without it's flaws and nowadays I'd rather play CRPG even though I missed it. Back when I was a little girl, my hard drive was filled with SNES and PS1 jrpg games. As I grew up I found the gameplay and lack of customization and choice making to be a chore even though I still think that JRPG's cute characters, simple plot, and dorky comedy to be superior. I really don't get the appeal of factions, lore, technology, and social critique of Fallout, I just want a fun story in a fun game.
Deltarune and Undertale actually toned down the weaknesses that JRPGs have and improved upon it's strength, which is simplicity and cuteness. It also added something that many entries of of these games usually lack, which is action and consequences, and this game pulled it off so great. Even the enemies can be interacted with, every battle can be ended in a pacifist way and I think that's brilliant. JRPG devs should follow Toby Fox's direction in designing his game and CRPG devs should learn a lot from his writing.

Deltarune is a shit game designed for 400 pound cat ladies approaching their forties who suck at drawing but run art blogs on tumblr. It doesn't improve upon JRPGs, it distills them to the point of mediocrity. Normally in a JRPG the draw is the cathartic feeling that YOU are the one moving the story forward. In Deltarune it just feels like you are an accessory to the story which is happening around you and the game punishes you for not playing exactly how the game wants you to, but it gives you the illusion of free choice by allowing you to do a "faux-genocide" run.
Ralsei is also a shitty tumblr bait character and I hope Toby Fox gets impaled on a flaming spike one day.

I actually agree with you. I've almost always hated turned based combat unless there was some major gimmick at play keeping me interested. What Deltarune, and to a lesser attempt, Undertale proved to me is that turned bassed combat with a sufficient enough gimmick can provide to be an even greater experience than the sum of it's parts. In fact, Deltarune proved nearly every point I could think of on how to improve Undertale to a point where it's actually fun with the exception of the difficulty.
Now, the question is, where do I look next to find a similar yet much more difficult system that isn't a straight up bullet hell or JRPG. Or perhaps, should I say, how do I just make game. I've been thinking of trying to use Godot to make this game I really fucking desperately want, but I have zero ideas how to start. The engine it's self seems like it could handle it, but I'm going to need to figure out most of the major problems with the genera gameplay wise and story wise with zero documentation.

He's good at releasing games with limited scope if nothing else. Look at the demo for undertale, the amount of shit he managed to pull off in the demo alone eclipsed anything else the full release was able to do.
I'm pretty sure he realized that, hence why he's doing these in chapters, so he can wipe the slate after he's finished with whatever concept he was working on in one and reset to another for the next.

I would say they're rpg-lite. There are definite RPG elements in them and Deltarune does introduce stronger RPG elements like party mechanics. It's also unknown how Toby intends to approach levelling in the Deltarune's full game (given the meta nature of the series, plus the fact that this is the "darker sequel" it's possible that we're going to be told we need to kill at least some monsters or else we're not going to have enough EXP to gain new abilities).
