7 Badges in and i think i've seen enough to call it what it is: A 20 dollar PSN/XBLA equivalent riding the brand name. To be blunt its beyond kid friendly into sjw tier 'pre offensive damage control'.
Gamblers are now called 'gamers', the casino is now an arcade but you cant play the games as Let's Go! is designed around a analogue stick and two buttons which is somehow harder to make minigames for than it was on the fucking game boy 20 years ago. Team Rocket are less threatening and more polite, you dont fight marrowaks ghost but the power of love just makes her fuck off and the 'not gary' rival -because blue is in the game which insinuates this is not a yellow remake but actually a red and blue sequel years later- is this beta cuck thats afraid of everything and as bland an innoffensive as possible.
Its not all bad, the settings while suffering from OR/AS's grid based design looks great, the musics okay and there are some nice little touches like leaving the SS Anne and meeting the Fairy type Kahuna from S/M and overall its less pozzed than merely bland for its shortcomings.
If i have one major, major gripe with this? its not a monster raising sim anymore.
Pokemon in this game function like in GO. Essentially taking what was a freeform build your own party rpg and turning those party members into something between gacha dupe pulls and MMORPG vendor trash. It even has a kind of soft 'killstreak' mechanic where you are meant to chain catch dozens of the same pokemon on the same route without leaving or having another pokemon spawn under your feet to get a chance at strong or rare pokemon. So you are using very dodgy motion controls to spam arm waving like its Wii Tennis to catch monsters. But not for your pocket. But to destroy them. You trash them by sending them to oak for candy that act like carbos and its like did in previous games. Spamming pokemon only to essentially kill them to render down into stat boosts.
This isnt "oh hey i caught a bellsprout, welcome to the team Radical Larry, lets see how you do!" monster raising sim good times. Its literally "meowth #38 caught, nice streak!" and thats so devaluing to the pokemon as characters in the game.
I expected it to be easy, to be dumbed down. I didn't expect it to be counter to the very ideals of monraising sim/rpg games.
Personal opinion this game is a fun nostalgic throwback i would pay $20 for as a digital download. This is not a 60 dollar physical release.
At least Digimon is finding its footing again this gen with Cyber Sluts, World and Survive. Maybe DQM will also be a nice alternative because right now the only reason to play this over US/UM is if you hate the tutorials that damn much, beyond that this is the worst outing in the series.

I bought the $100 pokeball bundle because I have too much disposable income and I'm a whore for pokemon. I hated the omnipresent handholding attitude in Sun & Moon where they treated the player like a toddler. I was expecting to hate this but bought it anyway.
I actually like Let's Go. I think they "fixed" pokemon a little bit. It's not perfect but it's pretty damn good. Grinding wild battles for hours to make yourself good enough to hit the next gym was shit. I think they should have retained the requirement to weaken a pokemon before catching it, but getting massive XP from catches is a huge improvement over grinding wild battles, both gameplay-wise and thematically (grinding wilds would mean you're just knocking tens of wild animals unconscious and leaving them there to die). The trainer battles are untouched except for the fact you can turn them into a 2-on-1 with the other joycon, but that's a choice you consciously make and is basically cheating/easy mode. The music is fantastic. I like making the throwing motion to catch things.
I was playing it and I came to a realization. I dug out my composition notebook from middle school that's full of stupid artwork and pokemon notes, and this game is everything I wanted as a kid, but I've played so many Pokemon games and the game has changed so much, I forgot. My childhood "perfect pokemon game" was this (paraphrased from retarded-kid-speak)

>battles look like Stadium and have background that looks like wherever the battle started
>clues in the tall grass to help you avoid/target pokemon (like the wiggling grass from last gen)
>all flying pokemon can fly without HM and you can control them

>some kind of mechanism for aiming your pokeball throws to make catching more skill-based instead of luck (I described it as an analog stick flicking motion as a kid, but obviously waggle built into an actual plastic pokeball is the superior version of this concept)
This game is everything I wanted as a kid and no matter how much of a grumpy /v/irgin I tried to be when playing it, it made me happy. I seriously envy all the children who are about 10 years old and getting this game for Christmas. This pokeball thing would have blown my fucking mind back then. It still needs some refinement (some way to weaken wild pokemon besides throwing berries) and it needs to be a little less CURRENT YEAR -ized but I think it's better than Sun & Moon. That's partly due to the original Gen 1 map, if they make an entirely new game in this style it'll probably railroad you down hallway-routes like Sun & Moon did.

The rumble is stronger than the joycon rumble, and it has a speaker inside which makes occasional noises related to what's happening on-screen. The little light around the joystick flashes yellow as it's trying to catch, red for failure and green for success, and it makes the accompanying sounds. When you catch something, the ball makes the pokemon cry and lights up in the color of their primary type.
I haven't tried wearing it on my belt because I'm not enough of an autist to walk around my workplace like that.

That includes Stadium and the 3DS games. They have never had a huge variety of animations. Let's Go has all those things plus specialized ones for the Partner pokemon and legendary or super powerful moves. The only time anyone would ever have to grind at all in Gen 1-3 is if they wanted to reach level 100, which was only necessary if you were playing Stadium or Colosseum (and even then everyone cheated in Rare Candies). Gen 7, and to a lesser extent Gen 5, have a problem due to experience scaling. While leveling up a Pokemon up to about 50 is easy, anything beyond that becomes harder. Gen 7 compounds this with Hyper Training requiring you to be level 100, the first time it's been required for pretty much anything since Gen 3. While there are things that mitigate it somewhat, from some idle shit to the Battle Agency giving rare candies out like, well, candy, it's still a legit problem for anyone that wants to try it.

I'd say Hyper Training is only really there to fix what little RNG breeding still has. Due to the way all Pokemon are scaled to level 50 in online battles (I think that's the default anyway, not to mention I'm not sure if Pokemon scale upwards or just downwards in Gen 7) it's a legitimate tactic. I should also note that most players won't encounter that sort of thing, just like most post-Gen 3 players won't ever need to get to level 100. Hell, most players will never get to 100 because it's hardly necessary. At best it's because you wanted to have a level advantage on your opponent. Official tournaments back in the day even had you stick to around level 50-ish, I think one was held at even lower levels. Several modes in Stadium are based on those old tournaments if I recall. The fact of the matter is you end the games around level 50-ish (unless you're Johto) and you really don't need to do much else if you go beyond that. Not disagreeing with your premise, just filling in some gaps.

Know what would be great as a mainline mechanic? If a game had wild pokemon battles as past games have had, but has an option to either use the "old style" of catching pokemon, where it's purely RNG, or the Let's Go style of capturing pokemon, where a well-placed ball is stronger than the "old style", whereas a bad throw lowers your odds.
Watching footage of it, it's definitely not a "for-me" game, but I wouldn't consider it terrible. Maybe a get-on-sale, at best.

No, it's a retelling where Red/Rival Oak never became champions and Red never defeated Team Rocket/Giovanni. The new protagonists do that instead.
Rival Oak mentions that he already started his adventure but didn't have the pokedex to do it, he had to scribble down the Pokemon information and locations on paper. Team Rocket was never defeated, Giovanni is still gym leader and conducting underground illegal operations, so obviously Red never defeated him. And once he's defeated, he again leaves, making Rival oak interested in taking on the Viridian City Gym for Gold/Silvert. And your rival seems to be the first champion the Kanto League ever had, as they suggest they will begin to start incorporating the Champions into the league starting with him, there's nothing to suggest Red and Rival oak ever became champions for fought for the title.

They had a real opportunity to flesh out Kanto aesthetic this time with the power of the Switch but nope, every technical limitation from the past (like how most "towns" or "cities" just have a few buildings in them still) is incorporated here in it's design because it's just a Gen 7 reskin. Better be prepared for how disappointing Gen 8 looks despite it being on the Switch.

Grinding is good when is done right
Pokemon grinding is bullshit because the encounters you have are random and require interrupting the main game, which is travelling around the place and fulfilling events, battles are completely there just to fill in the game. It also doesn't help that it takes too long for something that it takes too long for something that only requires two buttons presses. Only place they make coherence with the game is in the gyms.

Makes me wonder if the paid online will bring a resurgence in local trading/battling for gen8, assuming it sells well enough to encourage playing locally again like gen1-3. It was never made to be compatible with the main games in the first place. Let's Go was based on Pokémon Go. Chances are Gen 8 will be compatible with Pokémon Bank. Also my prediction is with the 3DS winding down Nintendo would be retarded not to have stand alone releases of Pokémon ROMs with Pokémon Bank compatibility on Switch. At least up to GBA gens at first because a Gen IV remake to complete Japan's island saga. But then no more remakes until DS emulation comes to Switch. 3DS games will have to be HD ports or wait until next gen console for 3DS emulation.

Holy shit nevermind, I was wrong. I didn't see the dialogue where Trace pretty much says that Red and Blue beat the Elite Four and fought for the Championship title.
So yeah, this is actually an alternate sequel where Red/Rival Oak never got the pokedex and Red never defeated Team Rocket (and likely never encountered any legendary Pokemon either). Professor Oak's ending dialogue made me think the Kanto Pokemon league was fairly newish as well and generally didn't have many Championships fought over.
