PLAY GAIARES EDITION

>what is a shmup?

It's short for shoot em up. They're games where you fly around, dodge projectiles/surroundings coming at you and shoot stuff.

>I've never played a shmup. Where do I start?

Get an emulator. Preferably Mednafen which is basically multiple emulators in 1.

>without GUI

https://mednafen.github.io

>with UI

https://fantasyanime.com/emulators

The best shmups to start with are the classics. Personally I recommend the PC Engine versions of Gradius and Salamander. Which are in my opinion the best shmups of all times and better than the arcade.

>This shit is too easy. I want a challenge

Play Gaiares, Death Smiles, Mushihimesama, etc, but most important don't play Touhou

Seems to be a little genre confusion around here. The games are called ShooT 'Dems (STDs). What's your favorite STD for co-op play anon? I like ones where you really feel connected to the other player. In In The Hunt for instance you can cover your buddy because your own projectiles blow up enemy projectiles.

Cross your fingers and hope you don't get the Airport stage first (or use Stage Edit like a bitch), and always be counting the number of Option or large Shot power-ups you've collected since the last one so that you never get a Special Power-up Up, at least until you finish the Highway stage. D.D is pretty shit at almost everything but here's a nice trick: his won't explode until you let go of the bomb button or it reaches the top of the screen. Thus, you can maximize the invincibility time from one of his bombs by moving to the bottom of screen and holding the bomb button.

Blunt isn't so bad, learn all its attacks for a nice score bump towards an extra life in the next stage.

Nah you don't need bombs for Blunt's final phase. The small orange bullets from its blown off heads are scary but their pattern is predictable and nothing else aims directly at you when you're below the center body at that point.

Not much to say about Envy's pink lasers except keep your eyes on their source and focus. The purple scattering beams are just bullshit.

As for Blunt's smaller turrets, they're only vulnerable when they're firing at you.

there are none. The genre however has an incredible ratio of great to bad games so you'll spend so much of your time tripping over games that are fantastic and play nothing like anything else out there, making each experience unique and fun. You can do high score grinding in Cotton Boomerang and have a tremendous time as the game is almost as much melee combat/juggling as it is taking on waves of baddies, dodging and pattern management. Overrated and attracts secondaries which shit up everything even tangentially related to it such as shmup discussions, it's not bad otherwise but the scoring I find can get really retarded in some of the games especially the ones where the following happen

>get to X boss

>go pacifist on one or more of her attacks to get loads of graze

>get to Y boss

>empty all your bombs/1ups on it to get points from cancelled bullets boosted by your graze counter

>No miss the rest of the game

Obviously you don't really have to go for something that extreme if you're not aiming for WR but what's the point of scoring if you're not learning and using the best possible strat or at-least a subset of it

>>15756526

Euroshmup are not made to appeal to what you think is a shmup, hence you don't like them, granted most are designed by morons who have only a surface level knowledge of what a good shmup is and just shove more visual effects to mask the issues and obviously those that simply have extreme bulletsponges with full RNG patterns and/or unpredictable instadeath are fucking garbage but the power fantasy styled ones where you turn your ship in a flying bullet curtain maker can be fun as a stress relief

I think the only one that's not a power fantasy I managed to enjoy was X²: No Relief but that shit was a long time ago.

Then there's the ones that just go off the deep end and barely are shmups anymore like Zirconia 2 (think VS shmup where comboing helps spawn bigger stuff on your opponent side but with the added twist of being a realtime card battle game), but that's actually what makes the game enjoyable.

>>15765283

I was once autistic enough to beat Cho Ren Sha 68K cross-armed, but I don't have the patience for that anymore. Arrows and random letter crap are objectively a completely thoughtless control system and there is absolutely no excuse for not allowing the player to remap their inputs to how they like on a PC game. It's pure laziness or incompetence. The only reason this situation exists is because they map to controller inputs without any extra effort on the developer's part, and most Japanese PC players are simply expected to have and want to use a controller in the first place. Luckily I think the popularity of STGBuilder is starting to thaw some change in this area in the doujin development scene.

Hey, you know there's this ability that makes human's a particular successful species, and it's called adaptability. It is not a difficult obstacle to overcome, and is, in fact, how most PC games were played before wasd became the standard for movement. Just because you lack this ability to adapt doesn't make arrow keys objectively bad for movement. It just makes you personally bad at using them for movement.

I haven't defended lack of input customization at all. I agree with your belief that it should be standard for PC games. However, I'm not so autistically obsessed over keybindings that I consider it an end-all-be-all of game quality. I don't see a game with an unorthodox control-scheme and go "whelp, it's shit, won't try playing it at all," because I'm not a stubborn idiot who won't can't deal with doing anything a different way than what I'm used to.

Not really, it's less accurate and ugly. I expect it'll also be crippled by Steam cancer for the "PC release". Just play the originals in MAME, you're not benefiting any of the original developers when you support modern IREM. The company is owned and run by a small group of parasites that continually make money off of others' efforts.

The other issue is the overrating of Treasure games as a whole. Made by Treasure? Whoa, it must be good, right! That's the correct opinion to have, right? Basically Treasure has for a long time occupied a strange middle ground between console-type action games and genuine arcade games. They often don't quite get arcade design, but it's close enough that casuals can feel like they're hardcore action gamers while playing their games.

Because literally any retard can tell how Ikaruga stands out from all other shmups because of its polarity mechanic, largely because of how simple it is and immediately obvious when you look at any gameplay of it or just have it described to you. When you pitch something like that to people whose image of shmups largely consists of generalizations like 'everything is 2hu bullet hell lol' or R-Type-type games or Space Invaders, then something like Ikaruga stands out immediately, which is why you have so many faggots who don't know or don't care to recognize the intricacies in the gameplay systems generally found in shmups calling it innovative (which isn't exactly wrong either), whereas a lot of other shmups try to sell themselves on their scoring systems and whatnot. You can't really market gameplay depth, it's something you have to experience for yourself, and any newb just won't have any idea what's going on when he looks at some fighting game trailer trying to explain why it's so deep. For effective marketing you need some surface-level gameplay hook so any retard can understand why your game is special.

Try selling someone something like Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu or Battle Garegga or Ketsui or Ibara or Akai Katana or Guwange on their gameplay concepts alone to someone who's barely played any shmups, and you'll begin to understand why a varied and strong visual presentation is such a necessity to be able to draw any attention if you can't quickly explain what makes this game so special.

I once put up a list someplace of recommended games released in a certain year which included several shmups, and some guy asked me why these possible 8/10 shmups are worth his time in a genre with a lot of 9/10s and 10/10, and whether they'll only be worth anything to dedicated fans of the genre instead of passerbys and more general gamers. That's kind of the mindset you're dealing with with most non-dedicated shmuppers, and why Ikaruga found such a large audience with people who never really bothered much with shmups. Kind of like how Cowboy Bebop is considered one of the best anime by gaijins because the anime itself caters a lot to gaijin tendencies in terms of storytelling and presentation on top of being quality.

>>15775727

I fucking wish Treasure was that overrated. People only know them for Gunstar Heroes, Radiant Silvergun, and Ikaruga. Meanwhile Alien Soldier, the Sin & Punishment games, Guardian Heroes, Gradius V, Wario Land, and Dynamite Headdy go completely ignored.
