Like everyone else says, you really need to love the classic JRPGs to love it.
I wouldn't say it was average, but I wouldn't say it's all singing all dancing either.
The demo gives you 2/3 hours or something daft, more than enough time once you know what you're doing. If you enjoy the gameplay in the demo, it gives a decent idea what the full game will be like. It does get more complex (enemies that need more hits to stun, or combinations of enemies that are harder to get stunned all at once) but not terribly much thanks to being able to use certain combinations of abilities to utterly break the game. And even if you just want to see more of a character's story, that's fine to.
In terms of Switch JRPGS, Dragon Quest XI seems to be more praised and have less issues brought up (a lot of folk don't like the cheap sounding music synths). It's getting a Switch edition, and being its a few months later I'd almost dare say it'll get more content. There's also Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (I loved it, but it can be very divisive), or some Disgaea games (even if they fix the problems- fuck NISA).
In terms of harem stuff, Xenoblade 2 kinda has a pseudo harem in that a lot of the characters you get are attractive waifus but not in the arab dress/belly dancer clothes. I think or or two might. The latest Shantae game was alright, but Pirate's Curse is better.
